Nintendo Revolution Named 'Wii'

By Nate Mook | Published April 27, 2006, 12:49 PM

Nintendo has given an official name to its upcoming next-generation game console formerly known by the code-name Revolution: Wii. Pronounced "we," the name was chosen because it emphasized the console is for everybody, Nintendo said in the announcement Thursday.

"While the code-name "Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else," explained a video showing off the console's logo. "Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak...And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd."

I dunno, the name is dumb, but its kind of fun to say Wiimote lol

i think that everybody here is taking the name wayy to seriously.
i mean really, its the quality of the console and how the console appeals to people that will make the consumers buy it not the name. I don't think that anybody knows how this console will work 100% snce nobodies seen it. so how can people say its "another gamecube" or that its never going to do well just based on a name. its like if you found the perfect partner but he or she has a weird name so you leave them becuase you dont want to have someone with a weird name with you ever. shallow much? yes

It would appear that people are already comming around to this new name. Although it's pretty easy to spin it into something childish like "would you like to come over and play with my Wii"... That would be akin to sayin "would you like to come over and play with my play station"... Stupid. In the very near future saying "Wanna play Wii?" will be as natural and inert as "Wanna play Playstation?". In fact, it will mean so much more.

Wii will become an industry icon much like iPod has. Wii is to XBOX 3Bixby and PS3, what iPod is to Walkman. Not too many people have grasped this idea yet because there is a strong existing perception of who Nintendo is, and because Nintendo as a company has been pretty quiet about the future as usual. To be sure Wii is not the next GameCube, it is a new machine with brand new capablities.

Haters out there might be able to avoid purchasing a Wii for the latest Need for Speed port (although that is a bit like saying haters can keep thier black and white TVs even after the color version launches...) They will however be forced to swallow thier words and purchase thier Wii once other things start to happen. Things like a Star Wars light saber battle game, or living room lazer tag. Things like web surfing on thier televisions, and learning about archeology or anatomy via virtual shovel and scalpel. Even if you never play a single traditional video game on Wii (henceforth reffered to as Channel 1 gaming), you will buy one for all of the non-traditional experiences it will provide. Hate it all you want, piss, moan, cry, stomp, b****, pout, rage... it don't matter, you will own one and you will love it so start getting used to it. To be honest you should be happy, this thing is gonna be awsome. I have to thank Nintendo personnally once again for thinking of me, for thinking of changing the world and providing exciting new experiences and not just shilling like Microshaft and Sony.

Ophello there is right. I actually love Nintendo for the sole reason that it wants to include everyone and wants to be different. People will buy their systems regardless of how new and improved they are. Customer loyalty is VERY big. Why not try new stuff out? Whilt people are looking for shiny versions of the same stuff, why not try something new? Something that nobody has done before? Just look at the DS!
Two screens-New
Touch-screen-New
Voice activation on a handheld- New
Creative use of microphone (wind)- New

They did something amazing with the DS and you're complaining? Honestly. Get over yourself.

The Gamecube was a great system too. They wanted something for everyone. They got Billy Hatcher, Harvest Moon, and other games and series that all ages could play. They were fun for everyone, no matter skill, experience, or age. They were uniting gamers of all ages and types. With Wii, they'll be breaking down the walls entirely, or so they hope. I'm willing to give them a chance. I mean, how crazy did a computer console sound with the Play Station came out? I personally thought that was weird. I figured "if I want a CD game, I'll just get one for the computer". Word of mouth and even fact can be misleading.. only experience with the system will tell us what we really think.

So give this a chance, people. It's a name that more or less says "We" as in the collective word for everyone. There's nothing wrong with wanting everyone to be able to play. Playstation caters to the seasoned gamers, and even XBox is doing that. Nintendo's trying for everyone. They're trying to bring people in who wouldn't normally be in. Stop making fun of the name and look at the system objectively.

So many people have their heads in a rather dark, cramped orifice and it really doesn't help anyone when reviewing. Give it a chance. that's all I'm saying.

You are all going to feel stupid for ragging on Wii when you see how f-ing bad a$$ the gaming experience is.

You don't have to like the name to buy the system. Nintendo wants something new. Wii is in. Get used to it.

"They make a remote style controler with gyros (which could be quite anoying once the cool newness of it wears off) and suddenly they are so different because they release gimmicks?"

Uh...you don't really know what you're talking about. A motion-sensitive input isn't a gimmick, its a selling point. It is the only reason this system is worth buying/trying. It won't "wear off". its an integral part of the experience.

Just watch. Wii will change the gaming market, and you'll want one before you know it.

Score: 0

They seem to be trying to distance themselves from most gamers, in doing that (just like Gamecube) they distance themselves from game makers as well! There is a reason why they are last and will probably remain number 3.

And Nintendo's constant brain washing gets anoying "We're Different", "Our consoles are for everybody", "Together we will change EVERYTHING"... do the Nintendo fan kids really eat this BS up? They make a remote style controler with gyros (which could be quite anoying once the cool newness of it wears off) and suddenly they are so different because they release gimmicks? No, they are different because they have been making horrible decisions the past several years ensuring last place in the console market.

Seems like they are going for the Honda Motorcycle approach... the "friendly motorcycles" back when most motorcycle riders were drunk felons.

Although there isn't much expansion for the gaming market, younger kids will want the system that their older brother or older kids they look up to have; PS2 has many kids games, maybe moreso than the GC, especially when you add up all the releases only in Japan. I doubt sweet granny is gonna be eating these things up, seriously. By going after such a cult niche market they are simply shooting themselves in the foot. If they can't get the sales then they won't get the games, it's a simple formula; I think game companies are looking at this and realizing they don't want Wii on their game cases.

Not only that, but, Nintendo's stock just dropped 2% in the wake of "Wii", nice going. If I was a stockholder I would be raising some hell right now.

The whole purpose of selecting a name for others around the world to understand it is to have it "spelled" the way it is "spoken". "Wii" pronounced "we"? Some products though, have performance and capabilities that supercede the name itself, which grant the name a purpose rather than an identity. Either way its doubtfull nintendo will be able to pull up enough hard core grunt under the bonnet to rival this current generation of consoles.-or maybe am wrong.

I think Wii is phonetical. It's pronounced "We" as in "us" "everyone" "all". Not "WeEEEEEEE" like everyone here says. It sounds more all inclusive and it's not the spelling of another word in any language I think (might be wrong), so they sort of invented an al inclusive word for the system. Besides, it's JUST a name. It's not a big deal

Well, I understand why they chose the name Wii and I think it’s very cool in what it stands for, but ya’ aint gonna’ get any respect with a name like “Wii. Wii are disappointed, Nintendo.

From a marketing perspective, this name is a disaster in English-speaking countries. The potential for ridicule and slang deviations is just too ripe. However, from a design perspective, they probably thought it'd be much easier for their team to come up with cool logos for the word "wii" rather than the word "revolution".

Still, I think The Revolution sounds much better. They could always shorten it to the "Rev" or "Revo". "Wii" is just wiidiculous.
