Nintendo: Wii Price Staying at $249

Despite price cuts coming from both Microsoft and Sony in preparation for holiday season sales of their next-generation consoles, Nintendo is opting not to follow suit. The company says it is selling every single $249 Wii console it makes, and thus has no reason to drop the price.
Microsoft has dropped the cost of the Xbox 360 by $50, while Sony has introduced a cheaper 40GB model in Japan and Europe. It is rumored that Sony will lower the price of the new 80GB PS3 once 60GB stock is depleted, but no concrete statement has been made. "We'll stay at $249 for the foreseeable future," Nintendo senior vice president of marketing George Harrison was quoted by Reuters.
You also have to realize almost all Wii sales go on eBay, the vultures know when everything shows up and there is no limit on how many you can buy.
Have any of you ever tried to buy those Pixar die-cast cars? It's the exact same thing, these hillbilly losers without a real job buy them as soon as the stores open or take cases home from the Wal-Mart's they work at and sell them on eBay.
Same goes for the Wii's

It isn't rocket science getting your hands on a Wii, Best Buys get them every Wednesday morning, go there when they open and ask for one, they rarely put them out on display anymore.
They did the same thing when the first run of 360's were hard to find and also with the PS3, but you were able to get one by Christmas due to the eBay market dying so quickly. They had lots of returns from the late comers trying to make a buck.
I could have sold mine (PS3) for $2000 on the 17th of Nov last year.

Yeah I went to EB right after release probably 5 times. Out of stock each time. I gave up looking, figure I'll pick one up next price drop. I don't put too much effort into getting my games. if they aren't available when I look, I forget about them and move on.

I've never seen ONE wii unit in stock at any store I've been to lately. Seen plenty of PS3s collecting dust however.

It would make no sense for them to drop the price. They're making a profit off of every console sold (something the other two companies cannot claim), and are still selling them like hotcakes. Why would they lower their price?

They shouldn't drop the price, not while demand is still high. By the way Wiitards who claim you can get one anywhere, I was at Wal-Mart today, and they had four behind glass.
If I needed the money and wasn't so lazy, I would buy them all and sell them on eBay for 100-150 over retail.

I was at the local Wal-Mart lask week and they were out of stock.

I was at Walmart and they had five palates of 360's collecting dust, and no Wii's.

Don't be pissed because Halo 3 sold a quarter million XBOX 360 consoles and people returned thier copies of ........ Lair.

I doubt he's lying. It's the same story over here: the Wii is hard to find in stock but there are plenty of Xbox360s available. There's also PS3s around too, but they're not as widely stocked because they're still too expensive for most here (still $1k retail).
If you want a Wii putting a deposit on the next shipment is the easiest way, according to EB. Really looks like Nintendo got a winning formula here! Good on 'em.

He's not lying, just obviouly frustrated that his beloved PS3 just isnt selling. Thre are always palletes of 360's everywhere.
He is trying to insinuate that bcause all stores always have 360's, they arent selling.
I have both systems and the PS3 collcts dust. If a multi platform game comes out, it's always the 360 version I buy. There is one good game for the PS3 which is MotorStorm, and they give it away for free with 80GB consoles.

Sony and Miocrosoft dropped the price to sell more units. Call me crazy but I don't think Nintendo has a problem selling units.

not dropping the price? Then this humble anon isn't buying. I'd only buy a wii if it was about $75...it's just a GC with the new remote.
Oh well...my GC will do for the next 5-10 years :D

I agree with you 100%. At $100 I'll start buyin for my nephews and neices... @ $250 it's overpriced.
Before people start jumping on me I will state that it is my opinion and I'm happy for NINtendo to have been the comeback kid.

I do agree it's a bit overpriced for what it is....kinda like the iPod.
But sales figures don't lie, and the public is definitely willing to buy Wii's at $250.
Score: 0
Oh, it's obviously overpriced. I'm not sure how much the Wii actually costs but I wouldn't put it much over $80-100 in raw parts. Then again, it comes down to simply supply and demand. Demand is high, supply is moderate. Keep the price up to slow demand.
Score: 0
Yup. And with the PS3 and 360 still priced well above the Wii... I don't see parents complaining about the $250 price tag. Good for NIN.

Just because it can play GC games doesn't mean it's just a gamecube with a new remote. That's like saying the PS2 was just a PS1 with a new case.

I'm sure Nintendo doesn't need your support in having them fly off the shelfs.

As it goes, a product is worth what you're will to pay for it.

Its basically a disc drive that plays games. Cheap to manufacture...

Yeah, i would consider a xbox if it were around $50 and a PS3 if it was around $100. They are both _way_ over priced too, especially the brick that is the 360.

I'm not sure how someone not changing their price is news. Well maybe in comparison to other consoles...
maybe...

As the holiday season quickly approaches, game manufacturers and companies like Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are expected to make it as appealing as possible to purchase their products.
Considering how much cheaper the Wii is compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3, anyone who expected a price cut is ludicrous IMO.

Reckon you US users are on the wrong end of the sales predictions from Nintendo marketing.
There are plenty of Wiis on store shelves here in Oz (that's not to say they aren't popular.. just that we seem to have more in reserve).
The only 'shortage' we had was the original 4 weeks after launch... since then it's been in stock around the country. :)
Score: 0
Yeah, as much as I wish they'd drop the price, and I know they could drop the price. Like Nintendo said, Wiis are still harder than fudge to find. Honestly, they could probably raise the price $50 and still have shortages.
I think we'll see a price cut for the next Holiday season, or at least a good bundle. I'm sure the Wii was a much bigger success than Nintendo dreamed and they'll be sucking the profits as long as they can. I say props to Nintendo.
Score: 0
That certainly makes sense. They already can't keep up with demand and they sell out as soon as they hit the shelves. Dropping the price would be kind of dumb.
