Nintendo: Wii is Still Selling Out

By Ed Oswald | Published July 12, 2007, 9:33 AM

If you're still trying to find a Nintendo Wii, keep looking. The console is expected to remain in short supply in the near future, says its North American president.

Reggie Fils-Aimee made the comments on Wednesday as part of the E3 Media and Business Summit. He said that even though the console had been basically sold out for all of the 33 weeks it has been available, it should become the number 1 gaming platform very soon.

If Nintendo does reach that goal, it would cap a meteoric rise back to the top of the video game industry by a company that many had considered an also-ran just a few short months ago.

By focusing on making games fun to play rather than having the best graphics as is true with both the DS and now the Wii, Nintendo has struck a cord with both veteran gamers and those who typically aren't the target audience for the industry.

In fact, Fils-Aimee said that the company found that one in eight men over the age of 50 in households with a Wii console regularly use it, which he said was an industry first.

About 100 new titles will be announced for the console through the Holidays for the Wii. Another 140 new DS titles will be announced as well.

In addition, the company plans to offer the Wii balance board, to be used initially with Wii Fit a new fitness-centric game, and the Wii Zapper, which would allow the controllers to be used for new weaponry in supported games.

The Wii is a TOY. Nothing else. Anyone that is serious about gaming does not use a Wii. They will use an XBox360, PS3, or a good old PC.

If your controller has only 5 buttons and your Grandma can play the game with you then you are just playing with a simple kiddie toy, nothing else.

Dont fool yourselves into thinking that the Wii sells well because it is a good gaming system. It sells well because it appeals to noobs who cant handle a real $400+ system. Your Grandma isnt on Halo poppin' skulls, she's playing Wii bowling and exercising to Wii Workout.

Use the Wii to play classic games because thats about all it can handle.

REAL gamers play PC games as they require much more conentration, strategy and multi-tasking. You talk about the Wii only have 5 buttons, but the PC has 106 plus a mouse and/or joystick. PC games. (not to mention the ALT, CTRL, s*** combinations) RTS and MMO games have failed on consoles, not because "real gamers dont like RTS", but because the user interface is too primative to control the advanced functions. (or type text to other players).

PC Gaming has historically had both real-games and fun-games. However in the past several years, the fun-games on PC's have been reduced to games such as "Bejeweled" and "Snood", mostly because the game publishers have drawn the line of what game is worth marketing. $40 games are worth it....$20 games are not.

REAL gamers like to play both fun and intense games. However because the "fun" category is dried up on the PC platform, the Wii is cheap enough to fill the gap! (as well as spending time with family who are not gamers)

360/PS3 gamers are generally only comprised of rich-kids and 20-something guys without families or responsibilities......people who play games to brag about "high score", rather than satisfying game experience.

We would probably play the Wii together if we had one - but really, a glass of wine and a 30 minute television show is about the extent of the time we have for recreation.

On the flip side - when our kids are 6 or 7... then we'll want to buy the Wii for them so that WE have more time for recreation =)... so there again, the Wii wins.

You're right about the 360/PS3 appealing to gamers who are either rich or have no family responsibilities.

Because it's a gaming system that realizes it's purpose is to be FUN. I'm sorry, cry all you want about how superior in polygons or whatever something is, but last I checked, FUN is what I buy. Which is why games like Tetris and things continue to be hugely popular. Heck, my kids love UNO the card game. It doesn't have to be high-tech polygon driven whatever, entertainment is entertainment. So that's 280.1 million vs 73.2 million combined. Which is almost 4 times as many copies sold. Not to mention that Mario Galaxy will easily boost that number _FAR_ higher.

Now if we take the chart of console sales on that site (http://www.vgchartz.com/) we'll notice that the XBOX360 has only sold 1.03 million more systems even though it was release almost ONE FULL YEAR earlier (22 Nov 2005 vs 19 Nov 2006).

Nintendo is going a new way, namely going for playability and fun instead of just better and better graphics. As there will come a time when graphics are no longer possible to be upgraded as you'll reach the limit of the hardware, or the person using it.

The only thing limiting playability and fun are the imagination of the people designing these new Nintendo systems such as the Wii and the DS. And In all honesty I'd rather have fun games, that games which look great but lack content.

Anyone serious about games plays on a PC, plain and simple. If you could put a PC gamer up against a console gamer in a game, the PC gamer would run circles around the guy using joysticks. This is especially true for first person shooters.

So, why do we buy consoles? Because they're easy, more social, and yeah, they're fun. So, since I've already got my serious gaming machine taken care of (my PC) I bought a nice cheap little Wii that's so small it's hardly noticeable in my entertainment center. One of my favorite pastimes lately has become playing Wii tennis with my wife. That's unprecedented. As long as my wife and I have known each other, games have been my thing. If I'm playing a game, I'm alone, and she's doing her own thing. It's incredible that Nintendo made a machine that appeals to me, a hardcore gamer, and my wife, who never plays video games.

Personally, my big reason for getting the Wii was to see how first person shooters would feel using this style of controller. After playing Call of Duty 3 I can definitely say that it's easier than playing with joysticks for looking around, but still harder than using a mouse.

But just because I bought a Wii that doesn't mean I won't buy a 360 or PS3 sometime in the future. Just not right now, not while they're so expensive. After more price drops and the game libraries are bigger, then I'll buy one. Because those too I'm sure are very fun.

I don't have a Wii, but have all the others. I don't think the Wii can be as bad as the 360..

well, that is what consoles are after all.

HDTV finally brings the high resolution needed for a decent display. They have hard drives for saving things. They are connected to the internet. They have USB ports.

I can see Micro$ofts reasons, but i am not sure what Sony could be waiting for. With a keyboard and a mouse, the PS3 could easily handle web surfing, email, IM, Digital photos, word processing, spreadsheets, etc...

Just buy your kid a PS3 and he can play games, type up papers, watch movies, surf, program games, etc... Pretty good deal for a family compared to buying a PC and a console.

Thank you yet again proving that you are indeed a rabid fanboy. There is not a console out there that can match the PC for gaming. Keep dreaming though.

Actually, I'd argue that for some games the Wii controller (Although perfectly adaptable on a computer) or in fact anything similar, is superior to the keyboard and mouse.

Let's take tennis as a rather obvious example, it's more natural to actually swing the controller than it is to move the mouse and press a button. Heck I'd love to replace the mouse in some of the PC FPS with a WiiMote and use that in combination with a keyboard which could be an interesting combination.

Personally my order is:

1. PC
2. Wii
3. XBOX
4. PS3

You have a point there. But the PS3 does not have this going for it.

I hardly use my PC for games anymore (too much work to do) Maybe when Starcraft 2 comes out... but on to the Wii, I bought one becouse it offered something fresh to me, the PS3 and the 360 offer the same play style as my PS1/PS2 with HD graphics and more polygons... Very cool but should have stayed at the 299.99 that the PS2 came out at. (I know they are alot more machine but for a game system thats my price limit.) I also like to add that my wife too actualy plays the Wii !!! The only other thing I can get her to play is MAME on the PC (she likes the old arcade games)

Wii selling like mad ? I know its a surprise to me (I was sure the PS3 was going to rule) but when Sony said it was going to cost double the last gen.. I said hell Nintendo is going to sell more systems this time and have the most games. Publishers like installed user bases. So as a smart consumer I chose the one who would have the most games.
