Nissan, Microsoft Create Xbox 360 Car

By the Betanews Staff | Published December 28, 2005, 10:34 PM

Nissan and Microsoft have teamed up to create a concept car that includes a built-in Xbox 360 gaming console. While parked, the driver can play Project Gotham Racing using the car's actual steering wheel, gas and brake pedals. The game is displayed on a flip-down 7-inch LCD screen.

The car, named URGE, will be shown off at the Detroit auto show on January 9 as the first vehicle to fully integrate a gaming system. "A Nissan URGE driver can, for example, maneuver through the streets of New York, park the car and fire up the Xbox 360, then virtually race through the same streets," Microsoft said in the announcement.

So this is going to cause Nissan's to "Crash" more often? lol

Hmm... Wouldn't this mean that Sony or Nintendo could sue Microsoft/Nissan over Antitrust ^_^... Besides, I would rather have the Game Cube instead of the Xbox.

Haha. Good point. Well... the first one anyway =p

The sad thing is, that's not too far from reality.

But yeah, if this goes ahead, I can see someone getting sued over antitrust... unless Nissan makes it possible to use a different console.

Lol, I just realized my comment sound like that. On the contrary, I have a GCN. I never had a PS2 or an XBOX, although I did want an XBOX. I wouldn't really call myself a fan though, so I guess you were right.

I was thinking GCN vs. XBOX 360 when I made that comment. That's no contest IMO. =)

I don't have a 360 :P So I can't compare.

But I have a GC, a Xbox and a PS1... and, personally, I thin each has their ups and downs... but GC is smaller and (slighty) faster IMO... so it wins ^_^

I just had to find and put this in here...

"At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the

computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating, "If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they painted new lines on the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull ove r to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue.

For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Only one person at a time could use the car unless you bought "CarNT," but then you would have to buy more seats.

6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive -- but it would only run on five percent of the roads.

7. The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "general protect ion fault" warning light.

8. The airbag system would ask, "Are you sure?" before deploying.

9. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the antenna.

10. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of Rand McNally Road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even though they neither need nor want them. Attempting to delete this option would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50 percent or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.

11. Every time GM introduced a new car, car buyers would have to learn to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

12. You'd have to press the "start" button to turn the engine off."

This is a spectacularly bad idea.

Once after a monster truck rally, I was watching attendees leave the parking lot. The traffic was rather conjested, and a number of guys--undoubedtly under the influence of what they'd just watched--thought it prudent to slip into four-wheel-drive and climb over the burm surrounding the lot in order to make a quick escape.

There's a segment of the human population who have a hard time cleanly separating fantasy from reality and all the more so when the controls for both realms are identical.

Of course, I do not object. I eagerly anticipate that the entertainment value of misuse will far outweigh any damage it will cause.

Yeah, why don't YOU go outside.. Go play in traffic or something..

Kids are obese because parents are obese and they don't care. Going outside has very little to do with whether or not you are obese. You can excercise and stay active, and what's outside? Its boring. No halloween, no eaaster egg hunts, there isn't anything to do..

I think its a stupid idea too, but only from the point of practicality, like using the real car controls to run the game.. I have news for you this, this idea is already in practice in many cars..

I think it's a neat concept. And for all those worrying about people using it while driving, as the article says - it can only be used while the car is in park. Furhermore, noone, noone is stupid enough to fire up a game while they're driving, even if it could be done. Street racing cars and people into car modding have done stuff like this for the longest time. They have laptops built in, PS2s built in, you think of it, they've got it.....and they CAN play while they're driving, but it's more for the passenger when the car is in motion :D
It's just a cool idea to actually have it integrate with car electronics....and I don't think anything will go wrong, at least not so far as to 'link' the xbox with the controls and vice versa when the car IS in motion. LEts face it people...it's 2K6 and they've got to find SOMETHING to catch peoples eyes, and tastes.

Score: 0

I disagree. I'm sure somewhere that there is a script kiddy that is both smart enough to hack the system to be usable while the car is in drive and also stupid enough to then actually try to play it while the car is in motion. Never underestimate the stupidity of the human race.

Hmm.. Interesting idea, new Driver's Ed cars with built in simulators, that is actually a good idea. They can be behind the actual car they will be driving, and its like a last minute "refresher" to make sure they are comfortable. This could be the start of something..

I can foresee cops pulling you over..

"Sir, do you know you were changing lanes without signalling?"

"Why no officer, thank you for reminding me"

"Not so fast, you got a simulator, turn the simulator on, and lets take a little road test..."

So instead of a ticket, or in addition to law enforcement could give you an "on stop" simulator course.

They can't. The EU would go nuts. MS would be even more impossible to compete with--even open source OSes would be in trouble. Or to go to a blue screen while actually driving the car and it switches to game mode while doing 75mph on the freeway!

I think this could be a bad move due to the way in wich electronics(software) can be infected today. Look at Palms and Cellphones. Where there is a will, there is a way to infect.

IMO

Score: 0

Or some hacker will change it so that it won't disable the controls during a real drive, and the camera positioned on the front of the car, will be transmitted to the 360 screen, and you could literally drive by wire.. Interesting.

Someone will figure a way to remove the limitations, and they will joy ride a car from the back seat....
