No More Huge Bills for iPhone Users
By Ed Oswald | Published August 23, 2007, 12:31 PM
AT&T is finally putting an end to the odd practice of sending its iPhone customers extremely detailed bills, sometimes numbering in the hundreds of pages.
The carrier's lengthy bills were first highlighted by Pittsburgh iPhone owner Justine Ezarik, who posted a one minute video to YouTube nearly two weeks ago. Her bill numbered 300 pages long.
While most have not received bills the size of Ezarik's -- which was so big it needed to be delivered in a box -- many have found themselves the recipients of bills that are at least 10 to 20 times the size of a normal cellular bill.
Many users began to complain about it to AT&T, saying the bills were far too detailed. The company responded Wednesday by sending all iPhone owners a text message saying that it will be simplifying the bill for those using Apple's phone.
"We are simplifying your paper bill, removing itemized detail. To view all detail go to att.com/mywireless. Still need full paper bill? Call 611," the message read. The new bills will be sent to all wireless customers starting September 28.
Those who wish to keep receiving the detailed bills -- one would guess not many -- will be charged an extra $1.99 per month. AT&T had been planning to make the switch anyway, however the number of complaints from iPhone users sped the process.
Hmmm, they may have cut down on paper bills, but this morning I received FOUR copies of my bill via email bills from them instead of just the usual ONE.

|I'm frankly amazed any company would want to send out bills that were that long. If it's specific to the iPhone is it really necessary? 300 pages (?!?) in one case and how many for others? I wonder what the postage for that 300 page bill cost. What a disgusting waste of paper and ink. I'm amazed that any company would waste resources on that since it will impact their profits insanely tiny or not.
I can hear the rainforests crying.

as far as the rainforests go, had all the users automatically been signed up for paperless billing the forests would be fine...

As has already been said... one huge red flag should have gone up when a 300 page bill got spit out and it it was mailed. Didn't someone somewhere scratch their head and think, "Holy s***!"
There's a detailed bill and then there's insanity. They need to reformat their detailed bills and find a way better way. They are essentially mailing a customer a bill the size of a novel. That's just frightening.

It amazes me how so many people can be so utterly clueless while signing up for $60+ a month service for a $600 phone.
You'd *think* they might actually *look* at it.
And then to have the gall to blame the company whom they apparently expected to be able to read their minds, even when it contradicts the choices they made during sign-up.

You couldn't take responsibility for your own actions if someone held a gun to your head (try to wrap your head around *that* catch-22). Don't worry, I'm not actually expecting you to be able to.

Considering the post you replied to had nothing to do with one "crappy format" or another, it's really not even relevant. You apparently missed his point.
Detailed billing is an option that *could* have been easily removed, if they'd bothered to look, read, or do anything other than sign and pay.
Of course, that's not their fault, right?
Score: 0
|But it is your fault according to the M$ drones on here. It does not matter that there was no example of what a "detailed" statement contains or looks like. You should have just known magically.
Or before getting the iPhone, you should have called AT&T up and asked them to send you a sample bill. LOL.
The fact is AT&T f'd up. And now, they are changing how the billing statement works.

Your parents must be *so* proud.
Now that you've fixed the link: What do you expect to get when you ask for an itemized bill, El Dingo? Perhaps an itemized list of every item they have an SKU for? Anything less and *then* you'd have a reason to whine.
Your problem?

|But they're not.
They are sending the shorter bill. The detailed bill will still be sent to those who want it.
They are simply changing the type of bill sent to the folks who should have chosen that shorter bill in the first place.
It does not matter that there was no example of what a "detailed" statement contains or looks like. You should have just known magically.
No, you just shouldn't be shocked, amazed, and more to the point angry at the company that sent it to you if it's "too detailed" for your tastes. It's called being able to deal with the consequences of your choices. It's called being an adult. Instead, what we have here is a bunch of whiny, spoiled, children who can't admit any failure on their part.

|you have no idea what they are doing. AT&T wireless (yea old AT&T) did have detailed billing at $1.99/month , when Cingular was formed they offered detailed billing for free as an attractive feature, because people wanted to know how their minutes were being consumed. so it comes standard with all cingular plans.
AT&T didn't **** up they were planning to make the change back anyways as noted in the last paragraph.
