Now Speaking at LinuxWorld: Microsoft

Attendees at this year's LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in Boston will likely be surprised to see at least one of the names on the list of speakers: Microsoft. The software giant plans to send Bill Hilf, its director of platform technology strategy to the conference to speak about the Linux/Open Source Lab at Microsoft.
According to an announcement, Hilf will discuss "Microsoft's viewpoint on the advantages and disadvantages of Open Source Software from a technical perspective." In recent months, Redmond has become increasingly critical of open source, saying it costs more to operate over time than Windows-based networks. Google said on Tuesday it plans to attend the conference as well.

|I wouldn't recommend using an Apple server. While the client machines are great and the server looks cool. It doesn't perform as well as it looks.
And on a side note. Leave MS alone. *nix is still to difficult for my grandma to use so if we didn't have Windows what would she do? And 'not use a computer' isn't a good answer as you would have to be an idiot to still not see the use of computers in every day life at this point.
Competing products is always good for the consumer and hopefuly this won't change in the future.
What I would like to see more then anything else is Intel to produce a full fledged OS. They did a lot of work with IBM and MS with OS/2 and still provide MS with a lot of code that goes into Windows.
As for the person commenting about the military. While some do use *nix there are also an increasing number of front line ships and vehicals that use Windows. My guess is that it is the embedded version which doesn't suffer the same BSOD problems that your average Windows machine has due to a considerabley reduced number of devices it needs to support.

|I always laugh when I hear how Linux isn't suitable for "Grandma and Grandpa." I learned it at 60 years old..and know people in their 70's who have learned it. In fact, I find that people who know neither MS nor Linux can pick either one up in about equal time. Anyway, I find it insulting to always hear kids saying how older people couldn't learn Linux. Age is not a factor for stupidity.

|I am quite sure the military uses both Linux and MS. My reference was to a relative who works with extremely sensitive classified material in the Air Force. He is a career serviceman and was telling me that at least for his department, they will not use MS.

|Congrtulations for learning. The fact of the matter is that certain things are easier to learn, easier to use then others. I find it highly unlikely that the average person who has never used a computer before can pick up *nix as fast as Windows. While you certainly have learnt it doesn't meen that everyone can. Much as not every kid can use *nix either.
And I find it insulting when you call me a kid. I have not been a kid for a long long time. Well, at least since Mosaic still had sizable market dominance.

|Sorry if you took offense, as I wasn't saying you are a kid. My reference was in general to the common use of "Grandma and Grandpa can't learn Linux." Often seen on forums. There have been numerous independent studies done in respect to learning curves for non-computer literate people learning Linux and MS...and actually, most I've read come out that the curve is about the same. Had I not worked with MS since DOS 5.0 through XP, I really think I would have learned much more quickly. In my personal experience, I found the MS experience to be a handicap in learning Linux.

|Linux and Windows are probably equally easy to learn, but OS X is way ahead of them both, for new computer users.

|I couldn't make a comment on that one. I can't say I've ever seen OS X. I'm totally unfamiliar with it but I've heard a lot of positive comments on the system.

|Microsoft should just buy Redhat and Novell and just shut down the companies. Have their phones forwarded to the local Taco Bell. :-)

|Great idea! That way, Linux users could become proficient in dealing with spyware, adware and virus laden computers. They could also challenge themselves with random cryptic BSOD errors and learn the joy of being ordered to reboot their systems, every time they make a change to settings or applications. MS could then focus on creating more wonderful innovations, such as cute "Search Puppies" and "Talking Paperclips" which awe and amaze those under five years old and the mentally retarded. It would also be a great way to keep affordable software out of the hands of schoolkids in lesser developed nations. Who cares about them, anyway? I'm sure that agencies such as the NSA would be happy to drop their development of secure Linux systems, too. Same for a lot of the military systems that use Linux on many of their classified data systems.
They can forward the calls to Taco Bell, just so long as MS doesn't buy it. I wouldn't want to pay $8.00 for a simple taco, let alone end up with the "beta" taco, loaded with beets and carrots instead of lettuce and tomato.:)

|Oh Microsoft forgot to let the public know that they bought out Linspire and changed it back to Microsoft Lindows. The beta version of the next Lindows is called "Lindows Lisa".
Also, Microsoft will announce their new slogan, "IF you create something good, we'll just buy you out."

That would be funny and cool at the same time.
I used Linux for 3 years and after that realized that it still sucked. It's always about 7 years behind anything that Apple and Microsoft do.

|Huh?
7 years behind Apple maybe, but not Microsoft - Longhorn "Chicken" Vista has proven that.

|Since you used Linux for three years, I'd think you could be more specific than "it still sucked." That's a real high tech term for a veteran user. How about specifics?

|I wish Microsoft would consider releasing a flavor of Linux that is native to working with Windows/Windows Server so you could deploy that in an extremely low-cost environment.
Would it be a bad idea of Linux and Windows working together? I think it would be sweet if you could log into a Windows domain with a Linux shell.

|What do they expect, to go to a Linux guru show and convince them that Windows Server is superior and can cut cost?!?! Cut cost with what there extremely overpriced liscensing fees?? There studies are in like 6 business's that cut there cost down, imagine how much a company would cut cost with Linux servers and php intranets, o wait the IT guys for Unix are paid more, why?? Because they know what they are doing..
I have an MCSE/MCSA in Win Server 2003 and quite honestly it means nothing to me now because I am looking for alternatives to Microsoft for our clients, I am doing alot of research on Apple right now and considering an Apple XSERVE running Tiger server just to test things out, anyone else have a good or bad exp. with Apple in the business? To my understanding they use Samba..
