Now bigger, Google prepares to get smaller

Although yesterday's completion of the Google + DoubleClick deal gives the combined business a big boost against Yahoo and Microsoft, Google is already planning staff layoffs.
"I'm pleased to share the news that we completed our acquisition of DoubleClick today," Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt wrote in his blog yesterday, when the ink on the deal was still barely dry. "An immediate task we'll undertake over the new few weeks is matching and aligning DoubleClick employees with our organizational plan for the business...As with most mergers, there may be reductions in head count. We expect these to take place in the US and possibly in other regions as well."
Beyond the impact upon any Google or DoubleClick employees who will now lose their jobs, fallout from the merger is also being felt by privacy groups that opposed the pact, along with rival companies in the search and online ad industries.
Google's great financial sucess so far has stemmed mainly from revenues from its search advertising business, in which advertisers buy keywords and sponsored listings show up in search results. That contextual advertising business was completely different, Google had argued, from the display advertising business that DoubleClick established, and with which Yahoo and Microsoft both compete.
With both context and display sewn together in one operation, Yahoo and Microsoft may now be perceived as genuinely competing with Google, where in fact their only prior direct competition had been for page views.
On the privacy side, the Electronic Privacy Information Center, Center for Democracy and Technology, and US PIRG filed a joint complaint last April with the US Federal Trade Commission, asking it to halt the acquisition pending an investigation.
After the FTC allowed the buyout to go ahead in December, EPIC gave testimony in January before the European Parliament, urging the EC to establish privacy safeguards as a condition of the merger.
But with another and possibly bigger threat now coming along the pike in the form of a possible merger between Microsoft and Yahoo, EPIC now seems rather resigned to the EC's decision. In a posting on its Web site today, EPIC states rather simply, "The European Commission today approved the proposed Google-DoubleClick merger under its competition authority."
EPIC also contends, however, that "though the Commission did not consider privacy in the merger review, it did reaffirm the obligation of Google-DoubleClick to comply with European privacy laws."
LOL gotta love the US goverment. yet another merger goes threw and still Sirius and XM merger still in Limbo. There is by far corruption in the ranks!!!!!!!

|Well aside from the article you just read about buying up companies and firing off the staff there is their horrible privacy policies, their whining to the EU and getting the instant search feature crippled in Vista, crying foul about one company buying another and then doing the same things themselves, etc.
They basically have a search monopoly and are buying up everything else in sight, but for some reason that's ok. Any other company does that and people scream. So many have this idea that Google are a bunch of saints, but they aren't. They are just another company out to make profits and they'll screw anyone over they can to get them.

I agree, that was BS.

Show me the numbers. I doubt they have even the Eu's lax definition of a monopoly (39.7%), certainly not the US's definition (~75%).

Oh come on with the number games. Everyone uses Google, it's actually a verb now for searching on the internet. Can any other search engine honestly compete with them? Yahoo might be able to hold up a little but basically Google is the Microsoft of search engines.
WHO did they SCREW?
I said they would, and they will. Just like any other company. As I said they are just trying to make a profit like all the others and if they have a chance to step on someone and get away with it to get a bit more power or money they will.

If you are going to call them a monopoly and use that as an excuse to bash them, you'd damned well better be ready to back it up with actual numbers. Otherwise, you're just running your mouth off about stuff you know nothing about. Don't call "monopoly" unless you know it.

So...
you called them a monopoly, but you can't back that up.

The point there was that Google, UNLIKE everyone else is becoming and actually being a monopoly WHILE pretending to be not "evil" (as its slogan goes). But in reality google has become such a monstrosity, that ANY sector it enters firms are dead afraid of it, because it throws a ton of money, hires best people and well, that's it. And LIKE other monopolies it's trying to diversify into everything, phones, radio, newspapers, magazines, medicine etc. And nobody can't do a thing about, since its billion empire. And why are they the best in business? Of course because they know EVERYTHING (that does not mean 100%, but rather a huge amount) about us AND trying to get more, by offering us google apps, google calendar, making medical sites, etc. I mean, think about this, google gathers more and more information on everyone DAY BY DAY.
The problem is that google doesn't understand that a good business has to LET other businesses live/exist too, and not kill them off by simply throwing more money and conquesting business sectors.
But the thing that pisses me the most about it, is still the fact that it continues doing what it does while saying that's it's trying to be good. I mean, it provides email service, and shows ads based on the content of my letter. And even though I know this is done by a machine and not a person, it's still an invasion of my privacy. It's GTalk does not delete logs, even if I want them deleted. And I can go on and on about things like this. Google invades our privacy, while at the same time claiming it's decent and honest. I mean, cmon, its ONLY about money. Is and always be. But if it would not claim that its not, the privacy issues would be easier to accept.
Google - take it easy and let other firms LIVE too. The good thing tho, is that search engine is something that people can switch from in a second. Amen to that.
P.S. Ohh, and did I mention that they are afraid of competition? The day MS made their offer for Yahoo! google complained that it was anti-competitive. And that coming from a company with 60%+ share in almost EVERY market. I mean, they are buying up whatever they can/want, but nooooo, everyone else should just sit back and watch them dominate.

What an interesting definition of privacy you must have...
I always thought of it as, "No-one else sees it", which is pretty much covered.
It's GTalk does not delete logs, even if I want them deleted.
Guess what? Neither does your hard drive.
Ever tried *permanently* deleting something? Takes forever. If your PC (or Google) permanently deleted everything, instead of marking it "safe to be written over", everything we do would take exponentially longer than it does now.
Google invades our privacy,
Only by your pretty skewed definition. They do not spy, or release any data without permission.

|According the the US, a monopoly, by itself, ain't a bad thing.
According to the EU, anyone with over 39.7% of the market is a monopoly, and must play by different rules (such as being forced to release trade-secrets) that the US would only seek to apply to those monopolies convicted of Anti-trust violations.
According the EU, I am sure Google qualifies in one way or another, as does Apple, I am sure in the iPod arena.
I am sure many other companies can...and will...be named that also fit that bill.

I agree with a valid point that Google complained rather hypocratically about the Yahoo + Microsoft deal and goes ahead and does a simliar acquisition itself.
I also think that the EU is unfairly biased against Microsoft, from following the hefty fines imposed unto them. At least treat them the same so that they can compete in the business world as equals.
PS I admire Google's approach to business; hire the best people in the field and spend lots of money building products that outperform others and dominate the market. Kinda like Microsoft ... only more ruthless.
