OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 Update Released

By Nate Mook | Published December 20, 2005, 11:58 AM

The first update to OpenOffice.org has been released exactly two months after the launch of version 2.0. Five release candidates of 2.0.1 have been made available since that time, with the final build showing up on OpenOffice.org mirror sites early Tuesday.

Version 2.0.1 brings a myriad of bug fixes and feature enhancements to the open source suite, which includes a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation builder and a database -- all for free and available in 36 languages for Windows and Unix based platforms. OpenOffice.org 2.0 most notably added support for the OpenDocument format and has received rave reviews from users.

OO sounds good but I'd need two things to switch.
(1) a reliable tool to convert my VBA Excel and Access macro programs to OOBasic
(2) a Solver add-in for the spreadsheet (for solving linear and nonlinear data models)

Anything like these available or planned?

It would be cool to have a native Windows x64 build. Beat MS to a 64 bit office suite!

Excellent! My only complaint: you have to download the entire thing again to get the updates, you can't download a patch to update it.

This is a peeve of mine as well.

It's not going to stop me form using it, it doens't take all that long for me to download, but for those poor bas****s still using dial-up...that's gotta suck.

Same here. The download takes a whole 5 minutes, but on dialup....man, my god.

7-Zipped it's only 60mb, but nobody 7-zips anything.

When you think about it, downloading a SP for Office is about the same size as the entire OO download.... so quit your b****in! ;)

It's not "b****in"

It's a legitimate complaint that I was going to voice as well, but someone else already did, so I don't have to.

It's also a good idea just for the bandwidth it would save the hosting servers.

Your comparison sucks.

Now try having to download MS Office every time the bring out a patch.

It's BS and you know it.

Umm, yes, many many people use OO. And yes, it's worth the download!

I've used it for over a year and am very happy with it. I've used it with both Windows and Linux. For whatever it's worth, I just sold my MS Office on eBay. That's what I think of OpenOffice.
