Oprah Signs Deal with XM Radio

By Ed Oswald | Published February 9, 2006, 11:16 AM

If Howard Stern is considered the King of all Media, Oprah Winfrey could very well be considered the Queen. Winfrey's Harpo Studios announced that it had signed a three-year, $55 million exclusive deal to produce a programming channel for XM Satellite Radio beginning in September of this year called "Oprah and Friends." The move would be the first major radio venture for Winfrey, who already has her daytime talk show, "O" Magazine, and the Oxygen television network.

"Together with my friends, we look forward to creating programming that will entertain, inform and inspire our listening audience on XM," Winfrey said in a statement. Several popular Oprah personalities will make regular appearances on the network, including Bob Greene, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Robin Smith, Marianne Williamson, Nate Berkus, and Gayle King. All programming would originate from a new XM studio to be built at Harpo Studios in Chicago.

Next news you will hear regarding satellite radio:
"Sirius signs Dr. Phil to a mutli-year deal."

Seems like the next likely choice if Sirius wants to one-up XM from this move would be to sign Dr. Phil. hehe.

XM had to do something to counter the move Sirius made in getting Howard Stern.

What better than something completely on the other end of the spectrum in terms of content.

Women PLEASE US ...vs... Women R US. Haha.

My first question is, who cares?

Its like Martha stewart on Sirius.. its not doing much good, its mostly visual stuff.

Oprah, while she has a large following, doesn't have much of a radio listening type audience, its TV. I don't see much sucess.

And who are the friends?

I think you misunderestimate The Big O; she and her legion of sheeplike followers are going to revolutionize satellite radio. It's going to be an advertizers w3t dream.

Unlike Martha Stewart, Oprah is very savvy and knows how to leverage her assets and market her brand. She built her media empire by making smart decisions; Martha pretty much got lucky (right place, right time and all that). While Martha's fans seem to be fickle, impatiently hopping from whatever chef, handyman, or lifestyle guru is the flavor-of-the month, Oprah's cult-like followers mean business. They put their money where their mouth is.

misunderestimate? Where did you go to college, ebonics university?

She won't do anything, except fizzle.

Oprah is dead. She is popular on TV for women that have nothing else better to do than sit at home and watch the kids and then catch the afternoon Oprah.

But, XM believes in her, so more power to them. this time next year, her show will be removed from their network...

"Misunderestimate" is a Bushism. Link: http://edition.cnn.com/2...5/offbeat.bushisms.reut/

I was under the impression that most folks who post at betanews are culturally literate, non-bigoted, and tech savvy. Thanks for letting me know that I can leave you out of those categories.
