PKWARE Brings PKZIP to X Windows

By Nate Mook | Published November 1, 2001, 6:44 AM

ZIP pioneer PKWARE is preparing to beta test its first graphical foray into UNIX. PKZIP for the X Window System brings the familiarity of the company's Windows offering to the majority of UNIX desktops. The beta will be limited to the first 250 applicants, and the pre-release software will expire on December 1. Initially supported systems include Solaris (for SPARC), HPUX, AIX, and x86 Linux.

While commercial software has tended to find the open source environment a tough one to survive in, PKWARE is banking on its household name to promote the product. The company may also be hoping to capitalize on an expected transition to Linux and other free operating systems by corporations looking to cut costs.

To apply for the beta test, simply visit the PKZIP for the X Window System beta page and enter your name and e-mail address. An invitation to join the select PKWARE test group will then be sent to your inbox. A survey to critique the beta will be sent to all participants via e-mail later this month. Detailed system requirements are additionally available for review.

PK, now that's a name I've not heard in a LONG time.

I'm confused about where PKWARE is going with this. RedHat 7.2 comes with zip-2.3-10.rpm by default... It's no GUI but it's not rocket science, either.

Then there's tar | bzip2, which gets you more compression...

I think it's more towards desktop oriented users that don't even know they have unzip and bzip2. Maybe it will coax winzip into releasing a linzip LOL!

bzip2 is also a painfully slow codec.

For the best compression use RAR (www.rarsoft.com). I never liked ZIP and even in the old days (DOS days) i used ARJ. RAR command-line (console mode) versions run on Linux, BeOS, DOS, OS/2 and various flavours of Unix.

While I already have unzip, I've always liked the pkware family. I've signed up, and if it meets my needs I may purchase it for several platforms. :-)
