PS2 Still Most Played Game Console

By the Betanews Staff | Published July 26, 2007, 12:01 PM

Despite the war of words going on over next-generation game console sales, not much has changed when it comes to which device is actually being played most. According to Nielsen GamePlay Metrics, the PlayStation 2 still accounts for 42 percent of game use in the US.

The original Xbox holds a distant second place with 17 percent, while the new Xbox 360 is played by 8 percent of households. Behind the Xbox 360 is Nintendo's GameCube at 5.8 percent. Although it may be bringing in major revenue for Nintendo, the Wii accounts for only 4 percent of video game use. Sony's PlayStation 3 trails far behind at 1.5 percent. Nielsen used a sample of 12,000 U.S. households with around 33,000 individuals to accumulate its figures for June.

Anyone surprised by that headline is either stupid or ill-informed. Any game shop can tell you what the most common platform is by their dealings with customers.

The article is about PLAYSTATION 2 being the most played console nothing about games, christ man.

It is? I have learned to not expect more from a Sony cheerleader I guess lol.

Can't say I'm too surprised. The PS2 has the best graphics and sound quality compared to every other game system in its class. Not to mention some of the best games. The PS2 also supports 1080i resolution as well just like the PS3. Not bad for a second generation game console.

I really like my PS2. Best console I've ever had, with tons of great content. $20 for the greatest hits is a great deal.

I recently purchased a PS2, I don't why it took so long, but it did. However, it's hard to deny the sheer number of games that are available for the PS2. Back in 2002, I purchased an XBox, but was disappointed in the lack of games titles. It did pick up and have purchased an additional Xbox; both are still working fine.

The Wii, is a different story. I don't think anyone anticipated it's success and subsequently, are still hard to find. They're sold out as soon as the store gets a shipment. I would like to see this survey in another year to see if the numbers have changed.

Well if you are content in knowing that only a few titles will be released for the aging ps2 then I guess it is still a viable platform...

I would say the PS2 will continue being #1 for about 2 years, at that time I will place my bets on the Wii taking the #1 spot back. It was like that with the SNES, even after the PS1 came out the SNES was the number one seller for quite some time. Not to mention first gen PS1 games kinda looked like a** (well not all of them but to be fair 3D was still kinda new for consoles lol)

The interesting part, PS3 owners play their console more hours than any of the others..

So much for lack of content...

"The average session with a PS3 was 83 minutes in the month of June. In comparison, the average Xbox 360 session lasted 61 minutes, and the average Wii session lasted only 57 minutes."

This means, whilst less people have PS3's, those that do, use them more than any other.

Must be from the time that I left my system on for 4 days by accident. Boosted the average since so few own them compared to other systems.

Get serious you actually say this is golden? Then again I can see why you would. You trolls sure find bizzare web sites to say is fact.

Is the 83 minutes games time or movies time? Last I check there is next to no games for PS3. My friend own one, and use it to play PS2 games, and said his PS2 games look better on PS2 than PS3.

Maybe the people who have 360's also have something else to occupy their time like uh, jobs.

Score: 0

okay, so you post the ratings which upholds your figure, except you failed to look at the last column.....in fact it is the XBOX 360 owners who play the most. while a single session of play is longer for PS3, xbox 360 owners play their system more times a day which equals more playing time overall. Just thought you should recognize this.

Wow 12,000 households counted now that is true survey. Come on.

Then again I know people with a 360 or a ps3 and they say they are playing xbox or playstation so that could really mess the numbers up.

I'm sorry, but I have a hard time believing that the original xbox is being PLAYED more than double the 360. By whom? Maybe if this is "total consoles in the home". Most people with a 360 have an xbox original. But if I'm playing an xbox game, it's on my 360.

Sorry; this HAS to be skewed, only because there's a serious common sense problem here.

Score: 0

|

yes but most people with an xbox dont necessarily have a 360. and what if you have a 360 w/o a hardrive, or its not under what mircosoft has updated to be compatible then you are playing on the old box

Score: 0

It isn't at all rare to find statistics which seem contrary to common sense. However, in the majority of cases that's because of certain known cognitive processing breakdowns (ref. prospect theory). That's why we actually measure things. Our "common sense" often gets in the way of empirical reality.

That said, and even not having the exact methodology used, Nielsen is pretty good at sampling and statistics. If the numbers are indeed skewed, they are likely not by very much.

(They certainly used a decent sample size. Consider somewhat an opposite. Next time you get a prescription drug, carefully read the insert for any studies' efficacy statistics. There you will find--and implicitly trust as you swallow the pill--clinical trials of sometimes no more than a couple hundred people, or even far less.)

Score: 0

|

This is most definitely skewed. I under stand the PS2 being most played considering that practically every household owns one. But the wii being 4% while the 360 is 8% seems fishy. Obviously not every household in this statistic had all the systems included in the poll, in particular a Wii.

The number could be true, consider how many failed PS2 out there, and people have to buy another or two system. My PS3 rarely played, and the laser isn't working very well.

That's why I am interest in the source for this article.

Yeah, most sold and still most played console; and don't you forget it!

With Guitar Hero III and Jackass game, not to mention another few dozen games are yet to be released for it, it will continue to kick for the next few years. Just look, not even half a dozen more games will be released for Xbox and Gamecube, they're officially dead.

I still play my PS2 on a daily basis, and I won't get a ps3 until the redesign, when it's around $400

Oh, and BTW, PS2 is still outselling the 360 :D Don't be hatin'!

Score: 0

Yeah but it is outseling the PS3 with even higher numbers.

I don't really care, but it's that's the main reason people are still developing for PS2, it still has the mass market share.

It just goes to show that Sony still has some winners.

How many of those 33,000 even owned a Nintendo Wii?

This doesn't exactly seem fair to Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii. One because the price and other because it cannot be found.

hmm... how did they come out with these numbers? Cite some source please.

THe thing is, the range of games and gameplay on the PS2 is great and the Wii has proven that people value gameplay over high end graphics any day.

People are buying PS3/Xbox 360 to take advantage of their HD TVs as much as anything.
