PS3 Performance Concerns Analysts

By Ed Oswald | Published October 4, 2006, 11:45 AM

Sony can't catch a break, and now its highly anticipated PlayStation 3 is worrying investors. Shares of the company fell Tuesday after a financial analyst expressed concern over the console after it displayed some unstable behavior at the Tokyo Game Show.

Macquarie Equities analyst David Gibson wrote in a research note to clients that he watched the system operate erratically and said it required repeated resets. The PS3 was enclosed in a display case, but Gibson was not sure of the exact reason.

The analyst called the issues troubling, especially considering they were appearing very close to the console's launch. Japan will see the console first on November 11, with PS3 sales beginning in the United States on November 17.

Representatives for Sony denied that there were any problems with the units, saying the conditions within the venue contributed to the problem and not the console itself. The consoles were enclosed in kiosks that were poorly ventilated, they claimed.

Sony argues that the problems were not only experienced by Sony, but by other console manufacturers at the show. The PS3 would not have the same issues when operating in a normal home setting, the representative said.

The PlayStation 3's apparent issues are yet another unfortunate turn of events for the Japanese electronics maker. Sony is currently battling with a massive recall of its laptop batteries across several manufacturers, which is expected to cost the company $250 million, if not more.

I doubt PS3 could be any more unreliable than the lauch of the Xbox360, with units catching fire and such, and the MASSIVE failure rates.

People here have very short memories, and are sucked in by sensationlism journelism.

Lets face it, as soon as 1 single PS3 overheats, Ed Oswald will be here reporting about how PS3's have overheating problems.

This is completely off topic, but since this is the most recent article about the PS3 and I'm sure there are Xbox360 fans reading this article to laugh at Sony, I figured this is as good a place as any to post this. Anyway, to help dispell the concerns of those boasting the storage capacity of Bluray discs for games with big high-resolution textures that use up a huge chunk of storage, and whether or not 1 DVD9 disc will be enough to house games of the future, here's an article about "new" texture compression technologies, already being used in an upcoming Xbox live arcade game.

I don't think any of you who have commented here have really researched the difference between the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Sony has three things going against them right now.
The first is of course the fact that Microsoft got a year's head start on the seventh generation of gaming consoles.
The second is the fact that Microsoft has a huge following from the Xbox, which means game developers are more likely to continue developing games for the Xbox 360.
The third is the fact that Sony lost a lot of people's respect with the Rootkit issue, as well as the ongoing battle with recalling Laptop batteries.

But still, have you really checked out the specs of the PS3? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

Both the Xbox 360 and the Wii are using PowerPC based processors, while the PS3 will use the Cell Broadband Engine processor. This will be the first time a gaming console use the Cell processor, which is of course the same branch of processors used in the world's fastest super computers.

Not to mention the fact that Linux will be pre-installed on the hard drive, and the platform for game development will be based on open source code.

Just look at all the licensed and sublicensed technology that the PS3 will include!

And of the three major 7th generation gaming consoles, the PS3 is the only one to use an nVidia graphics chipset, as opposed to ATI.

Of course you're gonna have hardcore ATI fans, just as there are hardcore nVidia fans.

Still, I don't think the PS3 will fail, in fact, I think over the next few years, the PS3 will make the XBox 360 seem like a 4th generation gaming console.

And the fact that PS1 and PS2 games will be able to be played on the PS3 without modification chips just means the user base has just quadrupled. I promise you more people own PS2s than Xboxs.

Score: 0

divine logic i agreed with your post mostly til you said more people own PS2's than xboxs. while that may be true that is only cause PS2 has more games and was on the market for a full year before the xbox was. And also most people didn't know if they could trust the Xbox to be a quality home console system at first. Sony's days at number 1 are numbered in the console market i think. I believe they will really start to lose market share the next round of consoles.

Thats all very well and good, but you seam to comment on everything else appart from what the article says.

point is it appears that the investors and financial analysts are worried about the Ps3's future to compete. This is down to the performance of the console. It also has worrying performance in regard to its memory access.

but conflicting opinions in this matter will only be answered when it is released and we get to see the games performance.

I think you have a pretty good point. I'm sure developers were also a little hesitant to focus too much on xbox, not knowing how well it would do or how serious MS really was.

I do think it's a matter of poor ventilation. Whether that's made worse by the displays is unknown. I've worked in electronic retail, and when we did these displays, they were prone to heat build up...big time. Especially if they had some neon.

Now of course, it could also be the compact design of these things, any of the 3 competitors. Sony did have issues with the old ps1/2 units and heat. But they managed to fix them.

I don't think heat issues will affect the PS3.

Score: 0

Yeah, it is poor ventilation. But as I stated in a comment down below, stores will (as they did/do with 360's) have consoles in kiosks with poor ventilation.

If the consoles can't go a week without failing, then its a problem. 360's have failed due to poor ventilation in kiosks, but not after 1 week. I think this problem may prove to be bigger than expected.

Sega basically killed the Dreamcast when they pulled out of the hardware business, it didn't exactly fail. It most likely would have remained behind the PS2 but it still could have done ok. In fact they are still making games for it to this day and in Japan they started selling them again.

I don't think the PS3 is going to fail, there are too many fanatics that will buy one no matter what. In my opinion it's not going to be the leading console anymore though, and I think they are going to lose a fortune on it when all is said and done. This could be the last Playstation if things don't start going better for them.

Score: 0

Dreamcast failed because it was losing 70-80% profit due to piracy. Their own fault though, basing the system off windows operating system, (it was easily cracked). No mod-chip was required to get games working.

Score: 0

|

Piracy was an issue, but I don't think it's what killed the Dreamcast. How many people even had CD burners back then, or high speed internet? The PS2 was a big problem because it could play DVDs and the Japanese ate it up. Sega was already in trouble financially because of all their past blunders with the Saturn and the whole Genesis addons fiasco. They lost lots of brand loyalty because of that. I think it was really a combination of lots of things. If the Dreamcast would have had the ability to play DVDs it probably would have beat the PS2 in Japan.

The Dreamcast was not based on Windows CE, it was just compatible with it. While it had the ability to run CE based games, almost none of them were written to use it. Instead they were written to run on the Dreamcast's native OS. The whole CE thing was pretty much a flop since it had limited capabilities and ran much slower than native Dreamcast code.

Score: 0

|

Actually, Dreamcast used GD-ROMS, right? Basically an "overburned" 99-minute CD-ROM that held up to 1 GB. If you had the burner to support it, you could even use 1 CD-ROM for the games, but the fact that it was possible made it very much exploited.

I personally do not know of any XBox games that have actually been burned by home users on their home PC, but some luckey users of Seaga Dreamcast have been able to copy the games to their computer's hard drive and burn them on Maxell 80 minute CD-Rs (only the games that would fit on one CD would work, but there were plenty of them!).

Score: 0

I'm not going to do extensive research just to prove you worng. As for "How many people even had CD burners back then" , I'll say I was one of them, burners were about $120-$150 and the time. As for "Piracy was an issue, but I don't think it's what killed the Dreamcast" , like I said, I'm not going to research this dead issue, but I remember going to my local swapmeet and seeing lines of kids eager to buy $15 dollar Dreamcast games.

Xbox games are easy, just use the ftp protocol to transfer the data from the xbox to the PC, then from the PC convert to iso, and voila. Homebrew Xbox games.

As for Dreamcast, i never got into that, they were always easily available on the net, if not at the swapmeet.

Hmm, what a contridiction... If it didnt fail, then why did they stop making such a 'quality' product?

As for piracy making it popular, I think not. People might rush out to get the console, but thats only good for Sega, while at the same time all game developers are losing money. Popularity here only refers to a lot of people having the system, but not that their paying for anything beyond that.

They stopped making it because the company was near bankruptcy from all their idiotic blunders in the past. They couldn't afford it. Sony and Microsoft lose a fortune on their consoles, that does not mean the Playstation and Xbox are failures now does it. Sega couldn't afford to do it though, simple as that. As was mentioned before the demand for the console is so great in Japan that Sega actually had to start selling them again recently, and new games are still being made. Failure? I don't think so. Sega as a company failed.
