PS3 Price Cut in US Only Temporary

By Ed Oswald | Published July 13, 2007, 11:38 AM

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves may have let something slip that American consumers weren't supposed to know: there really is no "price cut" for the PS3.

Instead, production on 60GB models in North America has apparently been halted in favor of the new 80GB version. When supplies run out, consumers would be left only with the new PS3 model, which retails for $599 USD, same as the old price of the 60GB model.

The admission of the plan came in response to a question from a Gamesindustry.biz reporter on why the lower price option was not offered by the European arm of the company.

"All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July," Reeves said. He then added that the 60GB PS3 would no longer be available in the United States.

No price cut will be offered in Europe; some retailers will instead bundle two games and two controllers rather than lowering the price. The 80GB PS3 model would not be available in Europe in the near feature either, Reeves said.

Although it has an upgraded hard drive, the new 80GB model also removes a feature that may be important to some. It lacks Sony's "Emotion" chip like the PAL European model, meaning that the console would only be compatible with 88 percent of legacy games versus the 100 percent compatibility with current models.

Reeves also defended the PS3's high price in Europe.

"It is [a lot], but surprisingly, people are paying that amount of money for it. Now they'll get two games and an extra controller as well," he argued. "It's not just a games machine as you know - you can play Blu-ray movies, you can download games from the network, you can browse the Internet and you can play music on it."

Update ribbon (small)

12:00 pm ET July 14, 2007 -Sony issued a statement late Friday confirming that it will no longer be producing the 60GB PS3. Once inventories are sold out, only the 80GB PS3 -- priced at $599 USD -- will be available.

According to Dave Karraker of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, "The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted. We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come. We won't be making any further announcements regarding our PS3 model hardware strategy in North America until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated."

Ok, sarcasm aside.. does it really matter that GTA IV won't fit on a single disc? I hardly think it does.

In fact, I am pretty close to buying a PS3 and I'd still probably get GTA on the 360 as I will all the other games that are made for both consoles.

EDIT - And for the record, the comment hardly indicates that there will definetely be 2 discs for 360 version. Plus I'd hardly say the PS3 is selling like hotcakes - improved maybe, but that's probably it and only because people think the $100 drop is not here to stay. While I am not Microsoft or sony fanboi (Have a ps1 ps2, xbox, and 360) Sony got it all wrong with this console.

While it packs all this cutting edge technology into one unit the price isnt right. While Microsoft has production issues, or quality issues, the newer models should resolve what seems to be their huge crux, what MS got right was the price. Its cheap (relative) and may not have all in one, but you can get the addons and while in the end you may pay more i believe more users rather peice mail a system then pay upwards of 600.

Im not knocking the tech although removal of the hardware chipped ps2 engine was a mistake, the system is just to much for the average consumer. Thats why the WII is doing so well, its cheap, fun, and while it might not be the cow + milk you can buy either later on if you so choose.

With all due respect, they're only fixing part of the problem.

The 3 ROD is only an indicator of an issue in one area of the console's hardware, and isn't neccesarily specific.

There are many other problems with the 360, that MS refuses to acknowledge (publicly at least): Dvd drives that quit reading 360 discs reliable, Dvd drives that are scratching the discs, overheating indicated by 2 rod, etc. Hell, even Bethesda is being quoted as saying at E3 "I do have a backup should one Xbox 360 fail ... evidently they do that sometimes."

You should say the Wii is selling more than all other consoles COMBINED. My favorite is when the try to say that the PS3 has sold more units than the 360 did last year, this far into its life cycle. Now if we use that same logic and look at the Wii, since it's well out-pacing the PS3, then it must be selling at incredible rates! The facts from the top management at Sony themselves -

"global head of Sony Computer Entertainment settled the matter once and for all.

Speaking to Norwegian game-news outlet VGTV, SCEI president and group CEO Kaz Hirai said in no uncertain terms that the 60GB PS3's days are numbered.

"From a hardware perspective, the $499 price adjustment we did for the 60GB version for the American market, we're no longer in production for that product," he said in an unedited on-camera interview.
"Once that product is gone from the retailer shelves, then we're back to a $599 SKU only, so it's not like we have a two-price strategy in the US market.
We found out very early on how consumers react to having just one SKU as opposed to two."

SCEA has subsequently confirmed the phase out, but emphasized that it would be gradual.

"The 60GB PS3 will be available in North America for $499 until supplies of that unit are depleted," Karraker told GameSpot in a follow-up interview.
"We have ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come."

http://uk.gamespot.com/n...amp;tag=newstop;title;1

Sony says the 60gb really is dead -

On the same day the price cut was announced, Sony announced a new 80GB PS3, a console that will be bundled with Motorstorm and will retail for $599, the same as the first.
The price cut for the 60GB PS3 was never intended to be a permanent cut for the product; it was only intended to clear out stock for the new version to be sold at the old price.
GameSpot has reported that Kaz Hirai, Sony Computer Entertainment's CEO and President, has confirmed in a video interview that the 60GB PS3s are no longer in production, and that all new PS3s will be 80GB models to be sold at $599.

Actually, what I love the most about the forums at BetaNews is that people take personal offense if someone doesn't like the PS3, and likes the 360 instead. Does it really matter if some guy who lives in another state, in another country, or on a different continent, doesn't like the gaming system you prefer? For gods sakes, grow up.

If you like the 360, buy it and the games and enjoy Xbox Live. If you like Sony PS3, buy it and the games and enjoy yourself. This isn't a battle of good versus evil, rebels vs. imperial forces, competition is a good thing, so we probably don't want one company to win and dominate the market. Variety is the spice of life people!

People, this is a forum. Everyone in entitled to their opinion! You’re NOT going to change another’s mind about the “best” consol. There is really no point in trying. This is a forum where you can say what you feel. And other’s opinions should not be detested because you do not agree with them.

Sony says the 60gb really is dead.

This is, to put it bluntly, stupid. The base for any business is "Can they sell their product?" For Sony, the answer is no. Of course some people will buy it, however a majority of the population believes Sony’s tactics to be ridiculous. The people who were major fans of Sony’s work already bought the 60 GB version at the high price $599. By making a newer, more improved model, they are targeting those who did not make the Sony PS3 their top choice. If the consumer did not purchase the PS3 after all that hype it was granted, then why would they buy it now? 20 GB is good, but it is not so much in that it will convince people to spend $599 that they have earned. Further still, consumers who did not want to spend $599 in the first place are going to buy the 60 GB version that has the temporary $100 price cut. Needless to say, Sony is relying on the success of the PS3.

The Plan I would have “expected” Sony to have prepared is the following:

1. Permanently lower the price on the 60 GB model.

2. Continue making the 60 GB model for it has features that some people would like to have. (A $599 video game, no matter how many features, it is still a video game. It *main* function is to allow the consumer to play games. It should cost less and competitors know this.)

3. Follow arrangement to make 80 GB model of the PS3. (Don’t make quite as many of these as the 60 GB models until the sales have been documented and calculated.)

4. Put both the 60 GB and 80 GB models up for sale in US, as well as other countries.

5. Then make necessary adjustment to fit the sales.

This is a plan that I feel may work towards the Sony Cooperation’s advantage. Something that would have been more benificial to the general public.

Now the only difference between these 2 is the HDD size. This one will sell out at this price. So even though there was already a 499 machine, it's still a price cut. It's like cuting the price of a premium by 100 even though elite & core are out there. Still a price cut.

My guess is that they're introducing the 80gb at 599 with the 60gb at 499. People buy the 499 until it's out. AND, since there are plenty of 60gb units in the stores, this will probably sell well (or at least better) until around mid/late October.

Then sales will slow for the 599 80gb. Then the day after thanksgiving, "Price Cut". 80gb for 499, or 449 (but I’m not holding my breath on 449).

If that's the plan, I got to say I like it. This gives Sony a sales rush for the 60gb, and another sales rush for the 80gb in time for the holidays.

I'm talking about how they made the bottom 2 buttons into triggers on the six-axis. On the original Dual-Shock they were just regular buttons like the top ones.

The link was more of just aimed at Steve saying "Microsoft don't know how to design a controler." While I didn't particularly care for their first controller the latest Xbox controller and the 360 controller are fantastic. The way the offset the 2 joysticks and added a little more space between them compared to the dual-shock makes it much more comfortable when you are using both joysticks. Which nowadays most games use both, besides racing games.

I was anticipating an XBOX price drop when PS3 came out but it never happened and so I didn't get one out of principal. The PS3 price has never been attractive enough even with a pice cut and Sony now say Europe wont get a price cut like the US (if thats what it is) but instead a game bundle and controller package incentive. Getting something cheaper is a ridiculous reason for getting it? (pls explain!)

"My opinion" is that if developers actually manage to harness the full power of the PS3 then the same games on the XBox will start looking less silky in comparison in the future.

I like Microsoft over Sony in all honesty but the machine was out a year longer than the PS3 and I see the prices by both parties as rip off. You can almost justify the price of PS3 due to the new technology costs of Blu Ray alone but MS manufacturing costs have dropped significantly now. After all, these two "Giants" keep telling us that they make more money on games licencing - if they dropped the price I would most certainly have got a 360 months ago and bought a decent amount of games by now and so would a lot of other people - so it adds up! I could have built a decent gaming PC for £500/$1000 which lets me do a lot more over the consoles generally and the games are cheaper.

I think most people have saw the light and got a WII, less powerfull but cheaper and more FUN - for the moment!

PS3 a threat to Xbox???!!!?!??!!?!? I don't think so. Not with s*** like this "fake price cut" in the name of phasing out an entire package SKU making Sony look bad after ten years of leading the videogame market while it's miscalculations, outpricing and utter arrogance forces its fans to jump ship and go to Wii and 360 in mother****ing droves, that is!

Bottom line: if SCEI/SCEE/SCEA keeps this s*** up it's gonna kill their hopes in the videogame market and turn the PS3 into another 3DO, NeoGeo, TurboGrafx or similar videogame console also-ran FASTER THAN A BOOMERANG-SHAPED SIXAXIS WOULD HAVE DONE IF THEY KEPT THAT ****ED-UP DESIGN FROM THE BEGINNING. Even the GameCube did bad in the market here (and there/everywhere/worldwide) yet Nintendo's Wii is at least trying to beat the odds now versus it's predecesor even after THAT particular cluster**** in part thanks to Sony's ****ed-up strategy (or lack thereof). In other words, Sony is falling apart the same way the "Big N" almost did, forcing a repeat of history IN ****ING REVERSE.

Worse, because of all the money they're losing on an expensive, worthless piece of s*** videogame machine WITH NO ****ING GAMES there will never be a PS4, PS5, PSP2 or anything after that for the simple reason that Sony has priced itself out of the market PERMANENTLY. So when Sony wakes up and finds the mother****ing truth about what their videogame business has died of they'll either kill of SCEI and it's components, buy out Nintendo OR pull a ****ing Sega and go multiplatform because the PlayStation hardware busines NO LONGER HAS A FUTURE. The 360 has an HDD too (if there going to take advantage of it). Developers just design the games on the 360 so that if you do have an HDD it uses it, but if you don't then it won't. Though they might use it for the PS3 because of the slower 2x BD-Rom read speeds.

You have been fooled by Microsoft spin, and your obvious lack of technical knowledge. Here are some facts. You are more than welcome to check them out..

1. PS3 2x Blu-Ray drive is NOT slower that the 360 DVD drive. The 360 DVD drive is CAV, and the data transfer speed varies considerably between the outer and inner edges of the disk. Obviously Microsoft quote the faster of the 2 figures in it's specifications. If you look at the inner edge, it's considerably slower than the 2xBD speed, if you look at the outer edge, it's marginally faster. Blu-Ray drives however, use CLV, the data transfer rate is identical across the entire disk surface. The 12x figure of the 360 DVD drive, is ONLY for single layer disks, it drops to 8x for DVD9 disks. Even on the outer of the disk, it's slightly slower than BD 2x, and the inner, it's considerably slower.

2. Coding a game to make casual use of a optional HDD (in the 360), and designing a game from the outset to use a HDD are 2 very different things. All PS3 developers can guarentee than all PS3 have a HDD, and games will be designed with this inmind. The 360 has cludges and workarounds to make use of optional HDD. This is why 360 games rarely make use of the HDD. It's certainly not as simple as you imply, in the form of
if (HDD)

...;

Else

---;

Whilst polymorphic code can use visitor patterns and the like, it's still a very poor substitute that simply relying on a HDD as standard.

Sony says $499 60GB PS3 is staying alive (alive!) in US
Posted Jul 13th 2007 4:03PM by Paul Miller
Filed under: Gaming

After some turbulent hours of confusion over this story, Sony finally got its facts straight and let the world know that it is in fact not going to discontinue its 60GB PS3 in US once current stock runs out. According to SCEA's Dave Karraker, "As announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August at $599 and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We have will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of our consumers for the foreseeable future." Apparently the confusion arose from Sony Europe's David Reeves explaining that if they cut the 60GB price in Europe, they'd run out of stock in Europe by the end of July. So, false alarm people, please resume buying / not buying your $499 60GB PS3s in an orderly manner.

I don't agree with this. Since they first started Sony has always been killing the cheapest PS3 to focus on one SKU this generation at the expense of it's fanboys, starting with the 20gig model. It's the same old s*** every time. They discount the cheap PS3, kill it off and BAM! Kicks the price right back up a notch. (Okay, so I couldn't resist the paraphrasing reference to "Emeril Live" cooking shows {{{LOL}}} -- but I'm sure you get the idea.) Bottom line is this: Sony's two-package model is not only fake now, it's ALWAYS BEEN FAKE. In fact, it never existed AT ALL and in actuality is nothing more than classic bait and switch. This isn't a price cut, IT'S A SCAM. Now get me a SWAT team on the scene! {LOL}

What I think Sony needs to do is dispose of the cheap PS3 at the same time as its ENTIRE PlayStation hardware lineup. In other words, they ought to take PS3 and PSP COMPLETELY OFF life support (which is essentially what's keeping both of them alive right now) and then take whatever's left of their money, run like hell AND ONLY RETURN ONCE THEY'VE DECIDED TO SUPPORT X360, DS, WII AND PC or PICK OFF NINTENDO rather than rely on an already-dead hardware collection that will OBVIOUSLY PREVENT THEM FROM EVER RELEASING A PS4, PSP2 OR WHATEVER ELSE THEY WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE PRODUCED IF THIS WASN'T EVEN THE CASE.

Give it up, fanboys. Sony's videogame hardware business is NOT just dying, IT'S ALREADY FLATLINED. That's it. End of story. Nothing left to see here, folks: please move along....................
