PS3 Sales Improve, But Still Last Place
By Nate Mook | Published August 24, 2007, 11:00 AM
NPD Group's July numbers for game console sales have arrived, and the news is good for Sony and Nintendo. The struggling PlayStation 3 saw a 60 percent sales boost thanks to a $100 price cut on the 60GB model that is being phased out. But Nintendo still held the sales lead with its Wii.
Although the PS3 is still in last place among the next-generation consoles, Sony did gain some ground against Microsoft. The company sold 159,000 units, far surpassing June's sales of 98,500. But it was still unable to top Microsoft's Xbox 360, which sold 170,000 units - slightly lower than June's 198,400 thanks to last month's extra week in NPD's counting.
The real winner in the game industry this year continues to be Nintendo, which retained the top sales spot by selling 425,000 Wii units. The Nintendo DS also fared well, with sales of 405,000 units in July, while the Nintendo GBA sold a respectable 87,000 units.
Last-generation consoles have continued to outsell both the Xbox 360 and PS3, which is not good news for game makers, as they must sell more titles on older systems to recoup the same revenues. Games for the latest consoles generally run between $10 and $20 more in price.
The PlayStation 2 racked up sales of 222,000 units in July, while Sony sold 214,000 units of its PlayStation Portable handheld device.
Overall, game industry sales in July nearly reached the $1 billion mark, up 37 percent from last year. Total yearly sales for 2007 thus far have topped $7 billion, a 42.6 percent increase from 2006. Much of that jump can be attributed to hardware sales as opposed to software, which makes sense as customers are still buying up next-gen consoles at a frenzied rate and Nintendo's Wii remains difficult to find in stores.
It's rather amusing to think of how Sony was expecting the PS3 to give them a tremendous advantage and opportunity to corner the HD market for Blu-ray. It's now starting to look like Blu-ray is quickly turning out to be the one thing that's killing the console.
On Amazon Electronics, the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player has been the #1 best-seller for quite some time... above all other electronics, period. Blu-ray isn't even in the top 100.
You feel that sting, Sony? That's pride ****in' with ya.
I remember back in '93 Trip Hawkins had a similar attitude demanding an extremely high price for the Panasonic FZ-1 3DO system for all its "cutting edge" technologies... and yes, I drank the Kool-Aid. While the system had a handful of really fun games, the first thing I think of when I look at that machine now is "the console I paid way too much money for".

PS3 is a great machine and very versatile. It plays Blu-Ray movies, It plays DVD movies, and even upscales them. It will play SACD audio discs. You can stream media from you computer, play games on the PS3, including older PS2/PS1 games.
One great thing about the PS3 over XBOX360, is the hard drive is a standard laptop hard drive that is very easily upgraded. The hard drive in the XBOX360 is in a special enclosure, and you HAVE to buy their drives, which are more $$$.
Also, As of now, the PS3 only has a 1% failure rate, where the XB360 has about a 30%. They also just had issues with the XB360 steering wheel overheating.
Microsoft is building a piece of crap with the 360. If I remember correctly, the XB360 does not have HDMI out, except on their high-end version.
People have said the XB360 is cheaper than the PS3, when it really isn't. If you buy an XB360 and want it to do the same things as the PS3, well, you have to buy the HD-DVD add on, a wireless adapter, a media card reader, etc....and by the time you are all done, you have spent the same, if not MORE than the PS3.

|Yeah, your right. The PS3 is a nice piece of hardware. The only problem though is just that. It's game library doesn't compare to the 360's currently. The 360 currently has a few killer apps like Bioshock, Gears of War, Oblivion, Oblivion: Shivering Isles, Forza Motorsport 2, Dead Rising, Saints Row, Call of Duty 2, F.E.A.R. Plus a few more upcoming games as well like Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, Mass Effect, Project Gotham 4, Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, Fable 2, Bully: Scholarship Edition, Unreal Tournament 3 just to name a few.
And what's the PS3 have? Currently the only game I see that could be fun is Residence: Fall of Man. And for the future I only see MGS4 (which isn't a confirmed PS3 exclusive yet) and Gran Turismo 5? Haze looks like it could be good but that's about it.
The PS3 could be a $3 billion machine, but what's it worth without any good games?
"as Blu-Ray is the best option in terms of space/bitrate on the disc."
For data storage (and PC backups), yeah, Blu-ray is better. But so far HD-DVD seems like it has the better sound and video with current movies.
"It will play SACD audio discs."
What's that? /Sarcastic
"You can stream media from you computer"
The 360 does too. Plus it can act like a Windows Media Center Extender too. If you have a WMC in one of your rooms (like I do) you can watch all your recorded shows in your other room too.
"including older PS2/PS1 games"
My PS2 and PSone can too.
"The hard drive in the XBOX360 is in a special enclosure, and you HAVE to buy their drives, which are more $$$."
They had to because of copy protection. Which brings me to another point; You can download TV shows and movies (in HD). The PS3 can't. Plus who cares, 120gb’s is enough for me anyway.
"where the XB360 has about a 30%."
They fixed that with a 3 year warranty, which is better than the PS3's warranty.
"Microsoft is building a piece of crap with the 360."
That's a matter of opinion.
"If I remember correctly, the XB360 does not have HDMI out, except on their high-end version."
The Premiums do now too, along with the Elites. But you don't need HDMI. If you really want 1080p then you can with a VGA adapter, plus some TV's do support the 1080p though component. By the way, most PS3 games are 720p anyway (I'd guess to at least 90% of the games are 720p if not like 95% or better).
"People have said the XB360 is cheaper than the PS3, when it really isn't."
You don't need all those extra's to play Bioshock on my 'videogaming' machine. Some people don't care about HD-DVD or Wifi (Ethernet is faster anyway). Those people can save there money and use it towards games instead.
"a media card reader"
That's only for the PS3.
So all in all, when you get the Xbox 360 you’re getting more games, more exclusives for less money. And I haven't really seen any PS3 games out yet that really look that much better than the 360’s version either. And actually most multi-platform games look better on the 360.
Oh and I almost forgot the 360 has better online too. I've had no lag and there's been never a time when I've had no one to play with in any of my games either (and I have a lot too). Playing Gears of War and have someone help you out at any part of the games is pretty fun. If the game gets hard, just go online and someone will be there to help you out.
Did you catch all that?

"PS3 is a great machine and very versatile"
That I will agree with. Its technical specs are indeed quite impressive.
"It plays DVD movies, and even upscales them"
One of the better features of the unit, able to be achieved with a simple DVD-ROM drive which could cut the cost of the machine by half. That would seriously drive sales through the roof. $100 off saw a tremendous spike in sales... keep it up Sony! I may actually buy one if that happened.
"It will play SACD audio discs"
Unfortunately, a dying (if not already dead) "hi-res" audio format. DVD-Audio was clearly superior, but it is sadly sharing the same fate as SACD. But, at least they learned their lesson with MiniDisc... or have they?
"You can stream media from you computer"
Not nearly as seamlessly and simple as you can with the 360 and a Windows Media Center PC on the same network. I almost thought it was too easy.
"including older PS2/PS1 games"
Sorry, but it is a rather well-known fact that the backward compatibility of the PS3 leaves a lot to be desired... even more now that the "Emotion Engine" has been stripped from the new models.
I agree with Bob on the other points he made. I (and I would imagine a lot of other people) simply do not need/want the extra features that the PS3 includes... or should I say Sony is forcing on you (reminiscent of so many other products and proprietary formats Sony has released in the past). The disappointing sales should prove that.
If recent events are any indication, I do hope Sony reverses their decision on having just one SKU on the market in the future once the 60GB model supplies are depleted. Offering a model without a Blu-ray Disc drive would be a nice start, but highly unlikely though, considering Sony's stubbornness and greed.

When you come on and read an article and your comment is something like "MS is stupid, the 360 is junk" when it is outselling the PS3 even though it has been out for a year longer, you sound stupid. (not you specifically pitdingo, just someone in general).
You know what else is stupid? When you spell out MS with a $ as in M$ or Micro$oft. It's childish and dumb. Microsoft is a company that was founded in a capitalist country where the idea is to create a business that makes money.
Not to mention the fact that the Forbes list of 100 richest people in the world are all worth over a billion, and none of them hold a candle to what Bill Gates does with his money. He could be like Enron and come up with accounting schemes to inflate stock prices, then cash in their millions while robbing from the pensions of employees that were relying on them to retire.
Bill Gates has done no such things, and has devoted his billions to helping people around the world. You need to get over yourselves and stop hating the fact that MS has market share for creating a product that my 70 year old grandparents can use.
This is why they have a huge market share. Sometimes its not always the best product that wins. Each system have their own merits. If you want to use Windows then pay for it and shut up. If you want to use Unix or Linux or Mac, then use it and shut up.
Don't pirate Windows and justify your theft by saying it is too expensive. There are alternatives out there so if you want to keep the cost down, learn how to use Unix or whatever. If it has shortcomings, the market will win and the platforms will improve to cover user needs. Don't blame Microsoft for creating the easiest to use OS with the most game support or whatever.
On the same token, if you want to own a PS3 then buy one and stfu. If you want to own a 360 then buy one and stfu. What your neighbor is using has no impact on the use of your system. Get over yourselves and stop acting like a bunch of 2 year olds.

|I actually found it very relevant, as the article highlights Sony's projected losses over the next 2 years. Regardless of the recent sudden spike in sales last month, their losses are still staggering. Consider it an addendum to the above article, if you will.
The surge in sales was directly related to the temporary price drop. What do you suppose the sales figures will be once their supply of 60GB models runs out? Granted, that may take quite some time if past sales are any indication.
Sony's elitist attitude is what ultimately prevents them from making any serious money. The sales of the 60GB model were bad enough, and apparently someone had the common sense to suggest "Who in their right mind would pay $700.00 for an 80GB model?" They had no choice but to lower the price... but their greed prevents them from doing the same with the 80GB model once supplies of the 60GB are depleted.
The article suggests "the gaming division will lose another $240 million this year despite an expected 50% rise in sales..."
"Expected", yet in May Sony failed to meet their own internal sales goals. So if they failed to meet an expected 50% rise in sales then, what exactly does a 60% rise in sales mean now? I believe the losses remain the same... either way, so far a very bleak future for the console the way things stand right now.

just as this article does not take into consideration lower production costs, higher sales and additonal sales from foreign markets (you know.. those things that the 360 struggles in).

Granted, they may have slightly lower production costs now with their 80GB model, but did they take that opportunity to pass those savings on to the consumer? No. Instead they try to make the consumer believe they're getting a good deal by getting an extra 20GB and MotorStorm for free at the original price point. Hence, part of the reason for their lagging sales.
Anyway, I'm eager to see how the sales figures look when they run out of 60GB models. Without a bevy of solid games in time for the holiday season, it doesn't look good.

I mean they have people frantically trying to scoop up those 60GB consoles before they are gone. Looks like the POS3 is going to take a last place this time around.

Actually I see plenty of them at Best Buy whenever I stop by. But truly the sales are just SAD, considering there was a price drop and they still didn't even match 360 sales...
I was actually considering buying a PS3, but I stopped to think long and hard... and I bought a laptop instead. Sure I paid 3 times more than the POS3, but I know for damn sure I'll be using it rather than waiting on a good game.

|The Wii is dominating and will probably continue to dominate. The next Xbox is still a ways away though. It is not profitable for them to release another console so early. It hurt them to haft to cut the Xbox, but it was really only their start up console of sorts.

|nah. i heard they're releasing the xbox arcade. that's the kind of smart move that'll change the game there.

|Yeah, I keep wanting to buy a PS3, but whenever I start to think about it, I doesn't make since too. I always think of other things I could use the $500 on. Like 360 and Wii games, since they have more games and exclusives anyway). I also don't have all four Wiimotes and nunchucks yet, plus I wanted the Virtual controller too.
Another thing is that the POS3 can run Linux too, which I thought might be pretty cool. But then I keep reminding my self that I could easily build my own PC for about $500-$600 to run any Linux distro a lot better (since you can't access the BD drive and the 3D accelerator on the POS3).
I want to convence myself to get a PS3, but it would be just collecting dust and taking up space on my entertaiment rack.

|Yeah, and even with the 360 price drop, the Wii continues to dominate it. I would save your money, sell the 360, and just keep the Wii.
M$ will soon abandon the 360 like they did the first XBox when it was clear the console is a failure. The Wii is king.

I definitely agree here, If you check my posts from back in September of 2006 you'll see I semi-predicted their success.
As for the 360. I like my 360, I get HD-DVD movies. And I just bought Bioshock (awesome game, the first game I've actually been playing through since Gears of War.) And I still have Halo 3 to look forward too, I have yet to see anything worth my time and money on the POS3.

|If you really want to play with linux, just do a dual boot. No need to spend a single dime on extra hardware. It's a bit of a hassle picking the OS at start-up, but it's still much cheaper.

|So 360 has a 30% decline in sales, and PS3 has a 60% increase.
Perhaps the tide is turning. There does seem to be some great games in the next 2 months on PS3.

|The PS3 increase is impressive, but remember that June was a "long" month according to NPD's counting. That means the Xbox 360 "decrease" wasn't really a decrease. In fact, the Xbox 360 still saw an increase week-over-week.

|your math is wrong. had it been a 'regular' month the ps3 increase would not have been as large.. true.
but that also means that had it been a regular month the 360 sales decrease would have been larger. the sales were 85% of the previous month with 170000 sold within 5 weeks, so 34000 avg each week. meaning normal month would have been 136000 sold, only 68.5% of the previous month.

|You statement makes zero sense. Since M$ rushed the 360 out (we are seeing all the defects because of that) due to the total failure of the first XBox, they had a year+ headstart on this generation.
The PS3 would have to sell at way high levels to make up for that lost ground.
The Wii just passed the 360 as the number one seller in this generation. The Wii is on its way to outsell even the PS2, which is the top selling console of all time.
Score: 0
|Total failure I think not the system for being a failure si still outselling your beloved PS3.

|Actually, your comment makes no sense. Microsoft had no reason to rush the Xbox 360. Sony had every reason to.
I would also hardly consider the Xbox a total failure.

|then why did they? a 33% failure rate and a billion $ in warrenty costs doesn't come from a well planned console launch.
the ps3 was anything but rushed, the lifespan of the ps2 compared to the xbox is clear evidence. and the ps2 is still best selling and being developped for compared to the xbox which was effectivly dropped off the face of the earth
