Philips Develops AAA Battery-Powered Cell Phone

By the Betanews Staff | Published March 29, 2007, 3:40 PM

Philips and Energizer have collaborated to produce a cellular phone that would run off a standard 'AAA' battery once the phone's traditional battery runs low. Called the Xenium NRG, the phone also takes advantage of special battery management technology produced by Israeli company Techtium. The battery can be of any brand or type, the company says.

If the battery inserted is rechargeable, when the phone is plugged in to charge both the standard battery and the AAA battery would both be charged. Approximately three extra hours of talk to would be available, the company says. The NRG includes technology that is also used in Energizer's Energi To Go product, a portable cell phone charger introduced last year.

Well I am using three AA 1500mA size battries in CDMA phone unfortunately didn't last for more than 6-7 in long journey with the vechicle in Sri Lanka. I tested with Aiji Ap 100 phone with Suntel service provider. But the idea sounds good as it's always easy to by AAA battery rather than the Mobile battery where it can be found only in the Mobile phone shops. Regarding the phone it's indeed a good idea. Let them look forward.

I'd buy it. The battery's in today's phones suck. They all last about a year then they die on you. If you want a new battery, it's about $50. I'd rather buy four AAA batteries for $10 that I'm sure that would last longer than one $50 battery.

It reminds me of the iPods. Once your battery dies in your iPod, you just have to buy a new iPod.

Not true,

My RAZR stays on for ten days (in Standby) and lasts about 3-4 with normal use.

It probably depends on how you use your phone for the most part, but I still think most of these rechargeable batteries that they use in portable things (like phones, iPods ect.) last for about a year then die. Although the Razor isn’t really all that old though either. Has it been a year yet since you got it?

I kind of wonder if they design them to last that long. When I first got my phone the battery would actually last for quite a while. I could go about a week without it dieing on me (though I don’t use it much), then a little while after a year it just suddenly started not keeping a charge. Now when it's fully charged I can only talk on it for about 10 minutes before it dies on me.

That’s about the same story for the iPods too. Apple gives the iPod a year warranty, but then shortly after a year is when the battery will die.

Why don't they use AAAA batteries, they'd be less bulky.

Wouldn't it be better to standardise on mobile phone chargers?

Most of the problems I've had with phone power has been hunting around the office for someone who's got a charger that fits my phone. Is it so hard for Sony and Nokia to use the same type of charger? Hmmm, they MUST be making money out of this mess somewhere, otherwise why do it?

What a terrible terrible terrible idea this is. I agree it would be far better to standardise mobile phone chargers and looking at developing longer life rechargable phone batteries. This is such a bad bad idea. :(

I assume you are joking :-)

The same standard cigarette lighter socket is found in every car, in to which you can plug any in-car phone charger. Surely, it's not rocket science to make the connector at other end the same for all phones. Yeah, the phones run on slightly different voltages but that's not a huge technical problem.

Instead we have phone companies forcing us to buy a g**d*** charger with every phone. I got a drawer full of the things. All that wasted copper. This can't be good for the planet :-/

No I'm serious, I really do think that developing a phone that can run on AAA batteries if the phone's main battery runs out is a bad bad idea for the environment. I would like to see standard phone chargers myself.

Bad idea for the environment ? Oh, please.. !

What, you've never heard of rechargeable AAA batteries? They've had them out since, well forever. Oh and come on, like it would make a dent anyway when you consider everything else that uses batteries.

Yeah I've heard of rechargable AAA batteries but people are lazy. And yeah it wouldn't do any favours for the environment knobhead.

About 4 years ago I had a phone that used standard AA batteries (larger then AAA)
OK it was larger then todays phones

If they could do it 4 years ago - Im sure they can do it now

Oh BTW the battery life was about 12 hours standby and 2 hours talk
But you could always pop into the corner shop and buy more batteries

Here's a novel idea. Keep an extra battery for your mobile handy. Was that so difficult?

That's the price I'd have to pay to have that damn "extra battery" for my cell phone! I suspect that a lot of people aren't willing to pay through their noses for a phone they got for "free" like I did with my three year plan.

i heard there was this novelty thing, i think they called it "thinking". and there was budget version of it, called "google". know em?

Sooo.... instead of just shipping higher capacity batteries with the phone in the first place, they'll let you pay extra for yet another accessory that supposedly adds functionality. Am I the only one who read it that way?

or it adds the flexibility to stop at any store and pop in a new battery at any time in case of emergency. I've had plenty of times where i was out and leaving the phone in the car for an hour or finding a wall charger wasn't reasonable. buying a 4 pack of aaa batteries for $5 would be sweet, esp if it gets 3 hours talk time a piece. you wouldn't have to buy anything you don't want. most if not all phones offer some type of extended battery already for a fee. this just makes it easier to pick one up off the shelf. plus if you don't use them for the phone they work in plenty of other common devices.

or you could just but an in-car charger for a few pounds/euros/dollars. Cause in reality that is when ya battery dies the most when travelling in a car.
