Philly Preps Tech for Live 8 Onslaught

By David Worthington | Published July 1, 2005, 8:50 PM

Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway will soon play host to an estimated one million spectators attending this weekend's Live 8 concert, setting the stage for a possible logistical nightmare for cellular providers. To avert a potential overload of its system, Verizon Wireless has upgraded its network capacity by nearly 40 percent.

Verizon has worked around the clock to shore up its permanent cell sites and is deploying a mobile transmission site called a "COLT" (Cell on Light Truck) near the main stage. The COLT weighs in at nearly 25,000 pounds, carries two mobile 50-foot cellular antennas and is backed up by an emergency generator. For comparison, Philadelphia's population within the city limits was estimated to be just over 1.5 million in 2000.

From the Live 8 website... Every single day, 30,000 children die, needlessly, of extreme poverty.
Every day 30,0000? How is this calculated?

It's called an average. Figure out the total number of people that died over a certain numbers of days (maybe a year) and divide that total by the number of days. So if 11,000,000 people died over the course of a year you'd get about 30,000 a day.

What the link you provide above doesn't say is that many African leaders are corrupt/incompetent/autocratic/etc. Even if G8 leaders decided to cancel debt/increase aids/give freer trades, it will not change anything as long as those leaders are in power.

Aid groups are receiving funds this time around - not governments.

Where'd all the cash go from the last time they did this?

They earned $100 million last time which is wonderful but far from enough. Check the debt section here:

Sounds good. I'm wondering how many calls one COLT can handle at any given time? And how many people are actually going to be able to talk on their cells phones during the concert while music is playing? Wouldn't it make more sence to put them in areas where cell phone use is highest? Say, away from the speakers?

it says near the main stage . there will probably be several. it's probably the most centrally located with the largest concentration of people.
