PlayStation2 Arrives...for Some

By Aaron Dobbins | Published October 26, 2000, 12:33 PM

At midnight last night, gamers in the United States finally got their hands on the much anticipated and awaited PlayStation2, well, some of them did anyways. US rollout was half what was originally planned by Sony, due to factory shortfalls and other problems, but it is for sure that those who were able to get one, are loving it. Now analysts are speculating that it may not be the shortage that hurts Sony (now reporting that 3.52 million units have been shipped), but the competition, as focus now shifts to Microsofts attempt at the console market, the X-Box, which is set to launch next year. Keep your eye out, and enjoy your games!

Ok, I'm with most people on here that the PS2 sucks and without the AA I think it is the worst waste of 300 bucks. And for all of you out there it does have AA but it is almost impossible to implement seeing how it drops the framerates 10-30 fps. And when was the last time I saw a jaggy on a tv...lets see...dreamcast (every game for it), PS1 (every last game and screen (including the sony logo), nintendo, snes, genesis, every console up to now has jaggies...but thats not the point here...the point is the rediculous amount of money people are paying for this POS on EBAY....I saw a PS2 with no extras, same package as you get at the store go for 2500 dollars on ebay. What kind of idiot would pay 2500 dollars for a POS console that doesnt even do AA right...they could build a dual PIII with a gigapixel graphics card that does FSAA and a DVDRAM for that money...with a 21" monitor at that to...or even better get a TV card and hook it up to a 55" Hi-Def Digital tv...there's your console for ya...and wait...even better...it has internet! Oh..thats right, PS2 doesnt get i-net access for at least another 6 months and even then its only 56k modem. And ontop of all that PS2 doesnt even support Hi-Def tv's, well it does limitedly...which if you buy a dreamcast to feed your poly pushing console cravings (which has around 100 games by now if I'm not mistaken) and then save your freakin 2500, then you can get a X-Box which can push a gigapixel, has FSAA, full Digital TV and Hi-Def support and has broadband net access upon release, plus X-Box has 150 developers backing them all the way, including Capcom, Squaresoft, Konami, and many other huge name game companies. I as a developer have seen what it takes to develop for PS2 and I'm with the other 60% of the developers out there in saying that the PS2 is the worst POS to develop for. MS will probably use their .NET and C# architechture if they are smart (havent got my hands on the dev kit yet) and make it easy for the developers to create mind blowing games. plus PS2 doesnt even have support for 4 controllers w/o a stupid multi-tap...why pay another 40 bucks for a multi-tap when you can get a system that has 4 controller ports...plus I'm sure most of you guys computers are at least as fast as if not faster than the PS2 so why even waste the money since all the games except maybe GT2000 and Tekken Tag are being released for PC as far as I've heard. So why waste your money on a DVD player with a freakin lame excuse for a console and a PS1 emulator built in...oh yeah...incase you havent heard...only about 90% of the PS1 games work on the PS2 and they arent even improved anymore, they had to remove it in the American vers (last time I heard) because it was dropping the compatability down to about 70%. Sony sucks and Nintendo/MS will knock PSX (1 and 2) right off the console market...PS3...dream on...Sony is gonna get so blown outa the water next fall that they won't have the guts to make the PS3...even if they did...it'd probably have a 600mhz processor with a 48 bit sound card and a freakin 32MB gpu...oh yeah...whats with the 48bit sound Sony??? I mean come on...Nintendo 64 has a 64 bit sound card...I thought Sony was supposed to be the best...whatever...

Oh yeah..on a second note....Sony is loosing the HDTV war too...Toshiba makes a cheaper 55" Digital Projection HDTV that is better quality...Sony's 55" - 3100 w/o dvd player Toshiba: 1900 with free Toshiba DVD player...I think Sony is loosing their grip on the market everywhere!

Allright, let me get this straight, you guys waited outside for a console that doesn't have any good games for it yet, costs 3x what a DVD player costs, has WAY overrated specs and just looks like an ugly little boxy troll?? Ok, I agree that the PS2 is promising, I mean once software makers start actually taking advantage of the emotion engine intelligently we might see good enough games on it to make it a good buy, but that won't happen for at least a year. But even when that happens, because of the video ram/ system ram / texturing system of the PS2, graphics will only be marginally better than what we can already see on say a Dreamcast which has a vastly superior approach. In other words you would have been better off buying a DC now (they give them out for free these days...) and getting a PS2 in 1 or 2 years at 150$... That way you'd have 2 great consoles for the same amount!!!!

Doing this, (let me just use a phrase out of Sega ads here) "It's thinking..."

How about you actually play the system and especially the games before you make your opinions public. Don't be jealous you didn't get one :)

I've read some of your comments on how you've waited outside and slept on the sidewalk all night just to get this rather crappy system.

All I can say is pathetic. When this happens, it is time to examine your life and see what takes priority.

no, it's not.

You are actually doing something that helps society. It's not like you are sleeping around on a sidewalk waiting for to buy a game console when it first comes out. And it's pretty crappy at that, my PC is 10x better. (and yes, I have played it)

Helps society? hehe. More like helping companies. Who exactly in 'society' are you helping cowboy? Could be the most ridiculous comment I've heard today. :)

I was curious about Niros comment about '..i dont need another dvd player with a built in console ...' or words to that effect. If you have something perhaps you might want to share with us some news of your new gaming console which apparently neither comes from microsoft/sony/sega/nintendo.

Sony is the only one with a DVD player for now ..nintendo is rumoured to be coming with their own format once again (idiots) sega as you know is using gdrom..and the xbox ..will be dvd.

Unless you are referring to your pc ..that can hardly be called a gaming console.

Alot of people out there want to get into dvd and this is a good opportunity for those people to try before investing in some state of the art dvd player.

For me down in australia ...most dvd players cost on average $600
given that the ps2 will be price around that mark ..it is looking pretty damn good ..u get a console plus can play movies.

Am I going to wait for the xbox ..what for? its a slapped together intel box with an nvidia card with a reduced footprint to make it look like a console ..theres talk of putting a hard drive ..and with accessories like a keyboard/modem its pretty much starting to look like a pc...what next eh? capcom releasing excel for the nintendo ..or adobe releasing photoshop for the ps2?

No you took that sentence the wrong way (I guess I should a put a comma there somewhere). I meant...I just don't need another DVD player. I have a good DVD player already. DVD players costs start at about $100, up to the more expensive ones that do the same thing as the $100 one but got more features. Unless you got a real good TV with composite video ins you won't need to spend more then $200 for the DVD player. As far as the gaming portion of the unit...no AA, no good games coming out (or very few), and a VERY difficult platform to program for, is definetly not worth $300, not to mention the cost of games and all the other accessories.

no AA? im assuming you're talking about anti-aliasing. When is the last time you saw a jagged pixely edge on your TV? (Apart from HD TVs)

normal tv sets aren't hi-res enough for console systems to even worry about FSAA.

Sheesh, FSAA should definately be handled by the monitor.
not all this uber-expensive videocard-ware.

SHEESH...why u so offended that I dislike the PS2, is it your girlfriend or somethin? no thought not...it's just a console.
Last time I saw jaggies on a tv? Let me think....Just about all the PS2 JAP games I've seen. TV monitors don't have a high resolution which is exactly why you need AA, it's at higher resolutions that you don't need to have AA. Regardless of the AA argument all the other bad sides of PS2 still stand, and definetly not worth half a grand.

k, how about $300 then?

You gonna spend $300 on the PS2. And look at it? No...you're gonna spend $50-60 on at least one game (They won't even include a demo disc for the $300 your spending!), a controler, you'll probably want a memory card too. that should put you to well over $400, for ONE game. What a BARGAIN!

I sat in Walmart from 8-9 o'clock last night and I was #11 on line. Then some manager came out with a sign that was amended in magic marker saying the line formed at 10. I went over to the electronics section to watch the baseball game and came back in 20 minutes to find out I was now about 100th. Not being a big gamer anyways I really didn't mind but with the help of the security guard I got pushed back up into line and eventually ended up getting 1 of the 39 the store had. WOW this system is amazing. I'm really impressed with Sony. Go out and get it if you can!

I feel your pain, only mine was a bit colder and harder... I camped out with my son and 50 other eagarly awaiting fans from 12:00am - 8:00am at our local K-Mart for our chance at owning this system! After several uncomfortable hours of sleeping on cold side-walk we were given our Numbers by the manager - luckly for my son and I we were 10th in line and had no problem getting one of the "21" - the system is nice - I only wished that the Anti-Alasing was there! besides that Maddan 2001 is really nice, well from the 10 mins I got to play it before I had to go into work! =(

Great system!!

Wow :) And while you were all sitting in those ridiculous lines *hoping* to be able to pay $300 + tax for a PS2, I was sitting at home, playing one of the many great games on my DC and having a beer :) Life is good.

LOL, I was about to say that too;)
Give me a break...camping out for a PS2 which is not even all that great. I'll be playing all the good games for the DC and save that $300 + tax + controllers + memory cards + games for other s*** and get a gamecube or XBOX next year. I don't need another DVD player with a built in game console ;)
Mayb when the price drops to $100 and metal gear solid 2 or FFX comes out for it I'll consider the purchase

You are soooo boring! Get out and stand in line for something you don't want! It's a good way to meet people and spend large amounts of precious, hard earned money. I mean, where else are you going to meet video game fanatics who would waste over 10 hours of their lives on a new console system? Certainly not at home, with your beer and your dreamcast.

Well camping out was a blast for me! I got to talk to everyone else waiting in line about all the old nintendo, sega, and sony games they'd played, all the tricks they'd learned... man it was awesome.

Plus some guy brought a laptop w/DVDs and we watched total recall and the running man while we waited. By the end of the wait we were all almost family!

What's so amazing about a new console that people are compelled to queue up for ages to buy one on the first day? It's not like they won't be on sale in a month, 6 months, 3 years time from now...

Chances are they'll be cheaper too once the hype dies down.
