RCN Ups Cable Speeds to 10Mbits

By Ed Oswald | Published January 19, 2005, 1:14 PM

RCN announced Wednesday that it will give its cable modem users additional speed at no extra cost. Users of its MegaModem Mach 7 service will be upgraded to 10Mbits per second, and its MegaModem Mach 5 users to 7Mbits per second. The upgrades would make RCN the fastest cable modem provider currently available.

Time Warner was the first to announce plans to boost cable speeds in December, which Cox Communications followed with a similar announcement. Comcast announced a speed increase earlier this week.

I keep seeing the speed increases and I can't help but think that it doesn't mean crap. It's marketing; that's all.

You'er only going to get the information as fast as the other machine can provide it.

If you go from 1.5mb to 10mb, your not going to see a huge difference but 2% of the time, because it depends on the supplying system/server..

I applaude the companies efforts, but they are really counting on people being ignorant to make them money.

My two scents.

Man... I would love to have those speeds... for now, I'll have to live with 1.5Mbps DSL.

They really need to get ADSL2+ up and running soon.

I believe RCN's press is geared against other national service providers, not regionals. OO has transfer caps. RCN doesn't.

The upgrade wont make RCN the fastest unless they match Cablevision's Optimum Online service speeds of 10Mbps Down & 1Mbps up..

Cablevision has been at 10/1Mb/sec for at least 4 years...RCN in NJ didn't even have 2way cable until they were bought out by Patriot.

I was just going to post the same thing. They are tied, nothing more.

yeah, they are tied with OOL, which has been at that speed for years... i can only hope CableVision announces a speed increase soon!

Also.. remember.. Verizon's FIOS promises 15 mpbs. So really, soon the comparison to DSL will be moot.
