Rockstar Patch Hides Hot Coffee Scenes

By Nate Mook | Published August 10, 2005, 10:38 AM

Rockstar has released a patch for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which removes the controversial sex scenes that were exposed by the "Hot Coffee" modification. The company even unveiled a special domain name, nomorehotcoffee.com to provide details on how gamers can make GTA "Hot Coffee proof."

The controversy over the modification began in July following the release of an add-on to Rockstar's flagship game that enabled the main character to engage in sexual acts. "Hot Coffee" was created by Patrick Wildenborg, who claimed his mod simply unlocked scenes already present in the game by disabling the "censor flag."

Rockstar initially denied any blame, alleging that "hackers" had modified scenes in the game. However, the company's claims were quickly drawn into question due to the professional quality of the scenes and their appearance in Xbox and PlayStation 2 versions of Grand Theft Auto.

The news prompted the ESRB to change the rating of the current version of the game to "AO" for adults only. Rockstar promised to provide a patch for customers and stop selling the game while it worked on a non-modifiable version.

A patch is now available from Rockstar, which prevents the removed scenes from being accessed even if attempts are made to install the "Hot Coffee" modification. "These scenes were not intended to be seen or to be part of the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas experience," the company explained.

But Rockstar's quick action may not be enough for some lawmakers. United States Senator Hillary Clinton blasted the company for "stealing the innocence of our children" and "making the difficult job of being a parent even harder." The U.S. House of Representatives called on the FTC to investigate Rockstar's actions in late July.

I don't know if this point has already been made, if so I'm sorry for repeating it...

As far as Hillary Clinton's statement regarding this game/company "stealing the innocence of our children"; does she think it's any better that just a few years ago, children were exposed to the fact that the President of the United States, her husband, was performing these acts in real life, plus commiting adultery, and lying to the American people. She sat idly by while that whole debacle with her husband was going on, but now that there is a situation with a video game, she is outraged. Children everywhere were exposed to that information about the president everytime they turned on the television. Yet, she has a problem that children have access to ANIMATED sex scenes IF they can figure out how to install the required program and then locate cheat codes to make it possible to view.
There are so many other real battles that need to be fought these days, why focus in on a video game?

*bump* ^^ this topic needs more posts. Quite frankly, this is another example of our rights being stripped away because we failed to speak up. Technically I'm part of the 'moral majority/minority', but that is a personal conviction that I cannot simply make everyone else agree with.

I'm a little disappointed that Rockstar caved in. They did nothing wrong. We as consumers are free to NOT buy a game if we think it's going to offend us or our children. I highly doubt that sex scenes really made GTA any worse than it was when it comes to being graphic. I love the game but I would never let my daughter play it. The sex scenes didn't make it any harder to be a parent, I simply said "No, it's for adults" and that was that.

Total crap, I see worse stuff on tv everyday. These shmucks in congress have to realize that video games are no longer just a kid thing. She says that it Rockstar is making it harder to be a parent. What kind of parent buys a mature rated game for a child anyway. This reeks of parental ignorance.

Thats bull because the "kids" dont just FIND mods unless they know they are there and what they are capable of doing. I'm sure these SAME kids have privied themselves to other dirty acts that their parents probably left unblocked on their cable television anyways. How about that for parenting. What comparison does Hillary have to harder parenting when Chelsea is old enough to produce REAL provacative (yet who would watch it unless its because shes a Clinton anyways) videos without mommy's permission.

What is it about America that it will crawl over 20 sex scenes to get to one violent scene?

I guess they have to go after the sims as well. Theres a code to turn of the censor which allows you to watch sex and showers. Honestly this is pointless. What kind of person over 10 hasn't talked about sex, thought about it, looked at a picture of it, or possibly seen his best female friend without clothes? Its not like it isnt everywhere else around us. Kids download music from kazaa and theres advertisments for 20 packs of condoms on the bottom of the page. Kids watch MTV. This case was a waste of time, money, and paper. Get with the time.

Let's tell it for what this is: a cartoon folks. Any given episode of that lousy South Park crap is ten times worse than the Hot Coffee scene, which was a gentle, tender, and caring moment between two people.

I'm sorry, is Hillary saying that "Hot Coffee" is "stealing the innocence of our children"? What about the game before Hot Coffee? What about the version of the game 5 years ago?! Yeah, Rockstar has been under bad press before, but GTA has never been a model-citizen game.

Plus, the innocence of your child can only be stolen by the game if you buy it for them. Don't buy your kid the game, and their innocence will be intact! (at least until they go back to school, which is around this time :P )

Honestly, I dont see the big deal.

THE HOT COFFEE SCENES ARE NOT VIEWABLE UNLESS THE USER PURPOSEFULLY DOWNLOADS THE PATCH AND INSTALLS IT.

What are parents worried about? As if killing police officers, running over pedestrians, beating them with a baseball bat, and going to a strip club is not as bad as the "Hot Coffee" modification.

(Blows off steam)

Agreed. The game had demoralizing content long before this mod.

The patch is not required. Stores will now sell existing copies on ebay for 10 times the about originally sold for. Why? because people like sex and are tired of having things censored for them. Parents should know what thier children are buying. Parents are responsible for what their children are doing. But then again no-one likes to take responsibility for anything anymore. Not even our president

SAD, i have lost a hell of a lot of respect for Rockstar.

I never had any respect for Hillary Clinton :P

I know Rockstar did what they needed to do to combat legal suites that shouldn't of happened in the first place, but they should of admitted the hidden modification in the first place.

Personally I fail to see how innocence and a loving act between two people are mutually exclusive. What the heck America nudity and sex are not evil, they're two of the best things in life, put down your bible and wake up. You wouldn't even exist if someone hadn't done that supposedly vile act.

Score: 0

|

What's vile about it is diplaying it for kids.

I'm not going to argue about how easy it is to see it or whatever... that's not the point (at least not the point of this side discussion).

I don't know if you have kids or not, but if you do/did, would you let them watch a porno movie? I certainly hope not.

Score: 0

My Dad has a friend who won't dance, because she thinks it's evil. It must be it's fun, sensual, and we can't have any of that in our lives. After all god exists to make us miserable. Get a clue, god is Santa Claus for adults. Not only does god not exist, but you're supposed to enjoy life. That requires participating in the activities that are the most fun and how could that not include sex?

Oh I get it so it's okay for your kids to watch horror films, violence, and carnage on the news, but two people loving each other that's what we should worry about? Get some perspective. I'll be the first to agree that a lot of porn is vile, but it's only vile when it's a non-loving act like tortore, slapping, and nonsense like that. I don't have kids, but I remember looking at porno mags as a kid and somehow I've managed to be loving, supportive, and a benevolent member of society.

"Oh I get it so it's okay for your kids to watch horror films, violence, and carnage on the news, but two people loving each other that's what we should worry about?"

When did I say that? Read my other posts on this topic. I personally have been against this game from the start because of its demoralizing nature. I'm not going to tell anyone else not to play it, but I certainly won't buy or support it. And when/if I have kids, they will never play a game like this.

You have a warped sense of what people believe God is. But that discussion does not belong here, so I won't continue it.

"And when/if I have kids, they will never play a game like this."

Wrong. they will play these games, they will just be so worried about your reaction that they will do it behind your back rather then in front of you where you can explain to them right and wrong. Same thing when I was young and "2 live crew" came out, my parents freaked so I just listened to it with my friends rather then with my parents. Now who do you think would have been a better roll model to point out what was right and wrong?

I am a parent of 4, and man, your in for a BIG suprise.

Now this discussion is completely off topic.

Irrelevant. GTA: SA is rated 18 in Europe and whatever equivalent in the US. Kids shouldn't be watching it. This patch exists because parents take no responsibility for their children anymore. If your 10yr old wanted to buy a top shelf adult magazine would you let them? Most likley not. The same should have applied for GTA. This is a patch to fix parents ignorance and/or lack of responsibility, not the game itself. Computer games aren't chucky egg and manic miner anymore. Parents can no longer argue "it's a game it's meant for kids". Gaming has entered the adult entertainment market the same as manga has for animated movies. Akira is not snow white.

Rant over.
