Samsung Debuts iPod Nano Competitor
By the Betanews Staff | Published January 3, 2006, 3:08 PM
Samsung debuted on Tuesday its largest flash based music player with subscription capabilities. The YP-Z5 features a capacity of up to 4GB, a 1.8-inch color screen with photo support, a 24-hour advertised battery life, and weighs about two ounces. Microsoft has also certified the devices as PlaysForSure compatible.
The YP-Z5 will be available in February for a price of $199 USD for the 2GB model, and $249 USD for the 4GB version. "Consumers are choosing digital music subscription services and Samsung supports this trend with the first 4GB flash player to offer subscription capabilities," Samsung's Mark Farish said.
Creative Zen Touch is 20gb at 299 AUD... why buy a 4GB iPod or anything else when Creative is the best?

|I might actually have to buy this one.
I absolutely *refuse* to buy an ipod.
This looks like it might actually be better in the long run, anyway.
Who needs accessories? It's got a headphone jack, which means I can jack it into my car stereo, my home theater system, or, if I'm in the mood for some *really* hideous sound, my PC.
Good enough for me.
Score: 0
|PC_Tool, iPods (save the current Shuffle without an adapter) feature a Dock connector that enables third parties to interface with the iPod. In addition to playing audio from the iPod, a device that docks with an iPod has the potential to display song, track, album, artist, times, playlists and other status information, control the iPod, and recharge the iPod all via a single connection.
Score: 0
|The question being...do I *need* any of that?
I don't need an interf ace other than the device itself, and all I need to hook it up to my car stereo is a audio jack. Done and done.
No fuss, no mess, no additional components to buy.

|Just boycott Apple and get a creative Zen ^_^. Cheeper, and works on both Win and Mac... I've heard rumors of it on Lin... but not confirmed :P

|During the Christmas I got an mp3 player from creative that was Microsoft certify with playforsure. After trying to install it and upload the music (and many hours wasted) I just got tired and went to the store and exchange it for an iPod. I put the CD and after 15 minutes my music was uploading. I should also mention that my knowledge of computers is advance since I work in the IT industry. This was all done on a brand new pc. One thing that apple does is good devices that are easy to setup. They work perfectly on the Mac, but after having 5 ipods using windows (this is the 5th) I have never encounter any problems unlike playforsure devices (this is my second playforsure mp3 player) If you think apple is too expensive then you pay for what you get and sometimes the extra money is to have a product that looks great and works without problems.
Score: 0
|After setting up a variety of new iPods for friends and family over the holidays, I must say that they work best with Mac OS X. Apple should include a Mac with every iPod. ;-) That said, iPod + iTunes + Windows is still better than the playsforsure(sometimes) solutions I've tried.

|From reading the posts here it is like no one likes the ipod. I however LOVE my ipod. The click wheel is brilliant and works beautifully. I've used other devices like the iRiver and it just doesn't hold up next to the ipod. Sure you can sign up for subsciption services, but you don't own the song, and then at the end of the month you MUST plug it in to the computer with the songs on it to renew the licenses.
So the screen scratches...get a case. That's what I did. I've had it over a year and don't have many scratches on it.
I defrag it sometimes and if I have any problems then I reboot it (it is a computer after all). I have never had any problems with it (by the way it is a 4G 30gb photo).
And as for "intelligent buyers," just because I like something different then you doesn't mean I'm not intelligent, and it apparently other people feel the same way (apple still has the number one portable music player right ;-)

|The click wheel is not exclusive to iPod either. My Zen Touch as something similar.

|Finally.
Now it will be done *right*.
Of course "the faithful" (read: "lemmings") will still lap up the Apple dreck but now *intelligent* buyers have a *real* option.

|Blah, blah, blah.... Can somebody please get these idiots to stop calling their latest product an iPod killer. After a while the credibility just isn't there anymore.
Score: 0
|If Samsung really wants to kill of iPod, they can just jack up the flash storage price they sold to Apple. No need to compete on the market, easily get more money and discourage potential iPod buyers with higher prices.

|I'll tell you why this doesn't stand a chance.
1) The name. Samsung doesn't understand that branding is 75% of the sale. If I can't remember what the name of the product is then how am I going to find it at a store or online? This is why apple calls all of their products "iPod" and not "YP-Z5".
2) It doesn't have the accessories.
3) It doesn't look as nice and it definately doesn't have the awsome scroll wheel of the iPod.
4) Features? great. It has features. Are they easy to use? Do I have to use their bundled software to take advantage of it? What other support is there? None? I thought so.
Conclusion:
Failed product
Reason: Not because it can't play music as well, but because they don't know how to market it or work out all of end user scenarios.
Score: 0
|1.)I agree, although all mp3 players are near each other at bestbuy.
2.) most ipod accessorries suck anyway.
3.) The scroll wheel on the ipod sucks which is why I dont own an ipod. Its frustrating to use and you often pass the song you want and have to backtrack and its hard to land on a specifin item. It does look better than the ipod.
4.)with an ipod you have to use bundled software. With a playsforsure there are tons of programs you can use. It supports Mp3 and Wma... what else do you want with only 4gbs that apple has? And the common person will only use mp3 and wma.
I bet that this product will fail though... not because its a bad product but because of the name. The common teen will probably never hear about this thing.
Score: 0
|And your saying Apple has?
Not a chance the ipod itself sucks, but it caught on ,on campus. The wheel sucks the programming sucks and Apple sucks other than that no problem.
Score: 0
|1. Defintely a problem in the US market. Apple's marketing has definitely been very strong in this area and Samsung has never seem to been able to really come up with a catchy name for their products.
2. That is a chicken or the egg problem. The iPod has so many accessories because it has become so popular that there is a large market for them. Until Samsung becomes more popular third party manufacturers aren't going to make accessories for them because right now there really isn't any money in them.
3. Unfortunately due to trademark restriction I don't think you are going to see a good reproduction. I personally don't see that as a big issue. Most people don't care about a wheel. They care about whether it is easy to use and if this is anything like the T-8 I guessing this one won't be.
4. Ease of use is definitely an important issue for customers and one area where I think that Samsung needs work. To say that there isn't any compelling reason for most consumer to choose this over an iPod isn't accurate. If there reported 38 HOURS of playback is close to being accurate I could see a lot of people wanting something like this. If it got 20 hours it would still be significantly better than an iPod nano.
I doubt this is going to be an "iPod Nano killer" but it might very well do much better than what some people think. If Samsung could just figure out how to market their products properly they could see some major growth in the new year.

"what other support is tehre" are u talking about customer service? u know what? u buy an ipod for 300$.. and wat customer service do u get?!?! they give u 1 single phone call. tahts it
now dats some real nice customer service huh..

|so now this guy is accusing them of having a fake battery life estimation?
...........
apple says ipod video plays 14 hours of music. when i use it i get 5 hours max.
ok? they always advertise the longest battery life possible. thats under the best conditions.
for my ipod i had to turn off my backlight, turn off equalizer, turn off sound check, turn off compilations feature, and had to only use AAC format songs at 128kbps. who the hell does that in real life? nobody.
apple advertises useless stuff too.. so go crawl back ur hole

|I don't know if anyone else has an iPod, but it straight sucks.
For one thing, the sorting.. I have songs with mp3 tags, and when you look at them on the iPod the sorting isn't alphabetical. I even looked on some boards, and a few other people have seen the same thing, yet the iPod is ultra popular? Why? I am going to go with this device.. I recommend any device that isn't an iPod, and judging from the problems with iPod, scratches, compatibility, I will take a more compatible windows device.
Score: 0
|The sorting is alphabetical by the way - you're probably just not using it right. If you go into "Artists" then it's sorted by artist. "Albums" and the albums are sorted alphabetically.
Chances are that your mp3 tags are a bit messed up - check both ID3v1 and ID3v2. I agree that it's a real pain in the butt to re-tag your entire collection, but once you've got it sorted, it is absolutely great to use. Good sound, good interface. Shame about the battery life.
...and the scratches...
...and the price...

|The stories from people that claim to have read the Korean press release only mention MP3, WMA, and JPEG images. Given Samsung's other players I would be surprised to see support for FLAC or Ogg Vorbis in any of their upcoming players.

|Lossless support is VERY processor and power expensive. ogg is a footnote to history and sadly will never ever be mainstream.
End of story.
The odd product may support them but they will be very few and far between.

|True, but I wouldn't be suprised to see lossless support (FLAC or otherwise) in future "high-end" products.
But then again, the interest may not be great enough for them to bother...people who can actually be bothered to tell the difference between an MP3 and FLAC encode are few and far between.
MP3 I can see being supported by this. FLAC and ogg? What the hell *is* ogg?
