London-based mobile satellite communications company Inmarsat has begun marketing its new IsatPhone as the world's cheapest satellite phone.

Data is transmitted at 2400 bps via satellite and at 9600 bps on GSM. The handset will be priced at $775 USD, and is ideally suited for those who do business in the nations bordering the Indian Ocean, where coverage is the densest.

Is it just me, or does this look like an old school Ericsson phone body attached to the satellite aerial.

|I think I recall these babies originally costing something in the $7K range. However, from the comments here, it seems the service and coverage haven't improved very much in those many years. But, the units are a great deal smaller. I guess that's progress.

What happened to the rest of the world? Will it work in New York or when I'm sailing in the Caribbean? Reading the article I understand it as satellite coverage is only available in certain areas.

|Where coverage is densest? I thought the point was that with satphones you weren't as geographically restricted?

|Actually, you're restricted pretty bad. In fact, most of these won't work anywere outside of populated regions.
Just to go any website that sells sat phone service and check their terms.
