Sneak Peek: Windows Me Commercial and Screensaver

By Nate Mook | Published September 11, 2000, 4:43 PM

Microsoft has sent over some goodies for BetaNews visitors in preparation for the Windows Me launch on September 14. The first item is an exclusive commercial to promote the upcoming version of Windows. Next up is a Windows Me screensaver outlining the new technologies and features in the OS. Microsoft will also be starting a new sweepstakes on the 14th in addition to holding a live Webcast from the event. Those interested in actually attending can catch the Meet Me Tour, visiting cities across the United States. While you wait, check out the commercial and screensaver direct from BetaNews.

I can confirm it's stable and working =)

I installed at work (on a partition RedHat Linux was residing) parallel to my main Windows 98 partition. At home, I "upgraded" my Win98 SE. In both scenarios the setup performed flawlessly (albeit slow in the latter scenario, about 2 hours).

On my work machine, it doesn't like my Linksys network card for some reason. I try to install the drivers and it gives me some stuff about the INF file :/

At home however, it picked up all of my hardware without any problems. Most applications still work with the exception of SQL Server 7 and Outlook 2000 (the setup warns which apps will not work or will need to be reinstalled after installing Whistler).

Anyway, if anyone knows of a forum for whistler support please let me know where it is, I'd appreciate it!

I’ve four PC’s and an iMac, one PC runs Windows 2000 Pro, one runs Terminal Server 4, one runs Suse Linux 7.0, and a laptop running 98SE, with the Mac running OS 8.6. So I think I’m qualified to say you don’t know what your talking about.
For a start Linux has skinabillity as standard something MS will try to implement in Whistler, if they can!!!
Secondly, on a Mac you have the excellent download manager, which means you can go back to a stalled download and carry on where you left of even if its now a week later.
Ever one of these OS’s has there own good and bad points,
The only reason MS is so rich is because of people like you with there blinkered opinion.
If you are so set in your ways and afraid to try new things why are posting on a beta testing forum?

Hey, I know that everybody hates MS, including me, I dont like their MSN s*** and whatever programs they have, but give Microsoft credit, Windows ME is the best OS I have seen for PC's. It is VERY STABLE, I am constantly doing stuff on my computer which would freeze up Win 98, ME has not frozen once and I have been using it for one week now. So far so good, ME is well worth installing.

Just my opinion

Score: 0

It will freeze eventually, trust me. It's still based on the Win9x kernel, which has the fundamental 'flaw' of allowing runaway applications to freeze or crash the whole system.

If you want a truly stable Windows OS, you should really be using Windows 2000. Apps running on it can crash and freeze left and right, but the OS will keep chugging along...

Score: 0

When he say’s “It's still based on the Win9x kernel” I think what he means to say is that it is still sits on top of Dos, seven to be presice, and because of this win9x/me has to maintain backward compatibility.
MS knows this that’s why they tried to make the “one OS does all” with Win2k but they couldn’t do it, too much 16 bit code floating about I guess.
I truly believe that these ‘updates’ should be free to download like NT service packs because that’s all they are.

What surprises me is the MS ad-campaign people expect the public to want to see a commercial for Me? I have just one question : Why? Do they want to build up hype for yet another o/s release? Perhaps we'll hear the start me up song again....?

I agree with quake8 Linux is pure junk..Its kernel is older than windows 3.1...Hello!! It doesnt support even 50% of the hardware even windows 2000 supports. It doesnt have even 50% of the amount of applications. As for the crashing thing..Your right linux doesnt crash it just ****s up and doesnt tell you. When a program screws up it doesnt give a msgbox or anything but it just sits there. When you try to open another application by double clicking sure the gui interaction is fine but that application sure as hell doesnt fire cause the damn kernel is screwed up. Another thing is Linux is not more secure than windows 2000 at all. Actually in a recent report by Geek News Linux has more security holes than windows NT 4.0 did. Go figure becuase its not even created by professional programs but freelance programmers. Would you rather buy a car built from old age parts and put together in a nice nifty package or buy a car built from the most advanced technology on the market put togtether somewhat good but for a hefty price? Oldsmobile or Camero ?? Come on camero is the choice of all users. Sure linux is nice to screw around on and I do have a linux box running right beside me with Mandrake 7.2 Beta 1 on it. I have played unreal tournament on it and I compared the results from windows 2000 to linux and windows 2000 out performed linux in unreal tournament by nearly 35 fps. You can blame it on bad drivers but what does that matter? Bad drivers = bad operating system becuase obviously third partie software lack of or not windows still outperformed linux. It will take Linux nearly 5 more years like quake8 said for it to catch up to windows 98...While in 5 years microsoft will blow linux out of the water. Microsoft has already showed its superiority in windows 2000. We have just seen the infancy of windows 2000 .. Brand New Kernel Built On NT's Kernel...I have never ever had windows 2000 crash on me..I have been running it on ALL my computers and had some of them running without reboot for nearly 6 months before obviously it needed to be rebooted due to the nature of a pc's cache becoming saturated..What I will say is the linux kernel is somewhat good if it undergoes a major overhaul. A new filesystem is in big time need..The each partition per a section dates back to the first version of unix. Windows went around that horrible so called security feature..

Linux has just as many problems as any other operating system does, including Windows. Anyone who doesn't believe me, just go read a linux newsgroup and you will see what I mean.

I love WindowsME. And I like most Microsoft software and hardware, although I don't agree with some of the things Bill Gates does. Such as his business practices.

Most people aren't going to give up all their hardware and software that they have paid for just to run another operating system. Not to mention one that has just as many bugs. Its nice that Linux is free, but there is also a reason why it is free, as they would have even less users if they charged for it. Linux reminds me too much of DOS, even with its graphical interface.

Score: 0

The reason why it's free is because the GNU GPL states the source code is free and available to the public. If MS had such an arrangement, you wouldn't be forking out anywhere near the amount you do for their releases.

Microsoft develops more software than hardware. PC Manufacturers are Apple's biggest competitors. Mac should just lay off on the PC bashing before they put of Microsoft, because lots of Microsoft's market is in the PC.

Have you ever used Windows Me (contrary to popular belief, it is NOT Windows ME)? MS has every good reason to want people to buy WinMe. It is a lot more stable than Win95/98/98SE (I only saw one blue screen during the whole beta test). The Help & Support feature is much better than the old help files. System Restore is a very welcomed feature (during the beta I deleted the system folder and System Restore worked flawlessly). For people wanting to work with digital movies there is Movie Maker. Sure, you can go download IE 5.5 and WMP 7.0, but that's not what MS is selling here. It is a much improved OS with new features.

I would recommend Win2k, but I use it occassionally and have had problems. I have several pieces of hardware (none more than a year ole) that it doesn't recognize. I also have several programs, many games, that won't install because they aren't built for NT (again, none more than one year old). Hopefully, when the Whistler beta gets here in October compatibility will be much better.
