Sony: 15 Exclusive Games for PS3 This Year
By Ed Oswald | Published May 17, 2007, 2:20 PM
Still lagging in sales behind competitors Microsoft and Nintendo, Sony is looking to an increasing number of exclusive titles for the PlayStation 3 this year in order to make up lost ground.
The company is admitting that a lack of titles produced solely for the PlayStation 3, as well as its high price, are two issues for the company. Due to the console's troubles early on, the PS3 lost many of its exclusive contracts as game makers opted to produce the games for the Xbox 360, which was released in late 2005.
Through the end of next March, Sony expects to have at least 15 exclusive games. Among the titles to be released are "Warhawk" and "Lair," with sports game "MLB: The Show" having been already released for the PS3 on May 15.
However, Sony is still providing no indication as to when the price of the console will come down even though it acknowledges it is a challenge for the company. Sony thinks innovative new games will help sell the PS3 regardless of its cost.
At $599 USD, the console is some $120 more expensive than the recently released top-of-the-line Xbox 360 Elite, and over twice the price of Nintendo's Wii, which retails for $249 USD.
well thats 15 games that will never be played.

|Yet another desperate attempt by Sony to sell their PS3 turd.
To all the Sony fanboys (who brought delusion to a scary level of mastership), take a look at the current sales by Npd:
http://www.gamesindustry...tent_page.php?aid=25104
"PlayStation 3 outsold by GBA
The latest NPD sales figures show continuing dominance for Nintendo as the GBA outsells Sony's PS3 - but its predecessor, PlayStation 2, is still doing better than Xbox 360.
NPD data for April reveals that the Nintendo DS is at the top of the pile with 471,000 units sold. The supply-constrained Wii s***ed 360,000 units.
Nearer the bottom of the hardware market is Sony's recently released PlayStation 3 which has sold 82,000 units in the past month, while the ageing Game Boy Advance outsold the next-gen console by 2000 units."
Even the Game Boy Advance, a six year old vintage handheld, is outselling the PS3!
A further look at how bad things stand for the PS3: the PS3 launch has caused an immense drop of over two thirds (68%) in operating profits for Sony!
"Sony also suffered its biggest quarterly loss for four years for the period from January to March 2007, with a net loss of JPY 67.6 billion (EUR 413m).
Sony's Game division recorded a JPY 232.3 billion (EUR 1.4 bn) loss, primarily due to selling the PS3 lower than the manufacturing price, as well as the associated costs of the worldwide launch."
http://www.gamesindustry...tent_page.php?aid=25038
So even though Sony is making already huge losses, the PS3 is still selling extremely bad, so that Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter thinks Sony may be desperate enough to do a price cut soon:
"So far Sony has offered no hint as to when a price cut for PlayStation 3 might be announced. Pachter offered, "My guess is that this will happen at E3 in July, but one never knows with Sony." "

|Seriously... this is just getting to be too funny... So, knowing that the price is still too high for most gamers, they aren't lowering it. Knowing that there are a lack of exclusive titles, and they can only get 15 games together? We are talking about Sony here... I believe (I don't have a link to back this up) they are at least the 3rd or 4th richest company in the WORLD and they can only manage 15 exclusive titles? Considering that BluRay, Sony Picture Studios, and nameless other brands under Sony are making money hand over fist, how is it they can't seem to find more development shops to produce more games?
Score: 0
|Do you really think its worth it for Sony to PAY developers to be exclusive, because that's what it would take - Developments costs are too high for companies to be exclusive. Sony doesn't make money on the consoles, so they need to make money on the games. Paying someone to be exclusive would negate any money making and might end up costing them.
And I think you may be a little off in the making money hand over fist. Might want to research that. They aren't Microsoft. I'm pretty sure they don't even play in the same ballpark when it comes to available cash.

Yes, and half of those were people buying replacement PS2s over and over, because Sony couldn't manufacture a decent DVD drive. Either way, something tells me that 260 million number was just pulled out of your ass. It doesn't matter what Sony has SOLD in the past, what matters is what they're SELLING now--which is not much. I remember when it was Nintendo vs. Sega in the console market. Sega was the leader for a while, but where are they now? There was also a time when Atari was the undisputed leader in the console sector. Giants do fall and Sony has already stumbled as Microsoft slashed at its knees.
Oh and on the subject of the PS2. I love how they only included 2 controller ports and you had to spend another $50 to buy a 4 player adapter. You couldn't just buy a cheap alternative from another manufacturer either, it had to be an official Sony adapter. If you bought another one, they made sure some games wouldn't function properly. Games made by EA for example. Also, they made sure you couldn't use a first generation adapter, it had to be Dual Shock adapter or whatever it was called. Not because all games needed Dual Shock support, but to make sure you went out and spent another $50. If it weren't for Microsoft (and partly Nintendo), Sony would still only give you the bare minimum and happily sell you all the extras like 4-player adapter, ethernet, hard disk, etc. It's the fierce competition from those companies that made sure Sony had no choice *but* to give you all the extras for free.
I've been playing video games since the mid 80's, so there's really no need for you to lecture me on where Sony stands in the console market. They may have dominated last generation, but things are quite different this time around. Sony really shot themselves in the foot with forcing people to get a Blu-Ray player in their consoles. Say what you will about Microsoft, but at least they're not forcing any format down your throat. Even if the HD-DVD format fails, it won't affect Microsoft. They can always release a Blu-Ray add on if they really want. On the other hand, if Blu-Ray fails, the PS3 and Sony are both screwed.

You obvously understand nothing about gaming so I will explain..
Even the "core" PS3 has a HDD and Blu-Ray drive, they key to making compatable games.. Now that it's looking likely that Microsoft are discontinuing the 360 Core, games will start to arrive that utilise the hard disk in the Premium and the Elite (there are already games that require a HDD in the 360, and this unavilable to Core owners), this freezes out the core owners even further once it's discontinued.
The differences between PS3 "core" and "premium" are such that it unaffects gaming (HDD side and lack of Wifi).

The fact that you have nothing good to say about anybody other than Sony means you are very clueless. Other companies make good hardware that people enjoy.
I have a 360, Wii, and PS3 and fail to see any of the systems worthy of dropping to the floor and worshiping the way that you do. I prefer the 360 so therefore I am going to called all kinds childish names by the fangirls.
Like I have mentioned before I am waiting for the day that SOny locks games and movies to a machine and we'll see who starts crying. You have be concerned about Sony's past track record with screwing the consumer. I see them doing this at some point they have the patent so just wait. When that happens no more trading and consumers will be stuck with crap games or movies.
MS is making a profit on the 360, I guess you are blind to those press releases. The division is recovering but Sony will take longer to recover if they even do. Other companies have made blunders like Nintendo and the virtual boy maybe this could be SOny's turn. Time will tell.

|If MS threw in the towel the lovely Sony would increase the price of the PS3 hardware since competition would be decreased. Competition is a good thing for the consumer Steve. Maybe in your dreams it isn't.

|WHat if you want to use the built in card readers on your 20 gig PS3, oh wait there is no upgrade path to do that. The core 360 you can add a hard drive and WOW it it works. You totaly miss that Sony doesn't have an upgrade path for the 20 gig PS3, who is getting screwed there?

|I'm stating a fact at you. I honestly don't give a s*** if Sony/Microsoft win or lose or whatever.
You said it's dominating the console market. It isn't. The PS2 is still holding that crown.

|I suspect Sony will be helping fade the PS2 away eventually, in the same way the did with the PS1, trying to push the new console. At the time when the PS2 came onto the market, people could have made similar silly statements like yours. Overall, it has sold LESS than the PS1, so it effectively it's actually the PS1 which "holds the crown".
But markets change. Money goes into the next generational consoles every time because of the millions and millions invested in them. If people don't upgrade, they've got a problem - same is true for any company.

|I thought that SOny said that all titles would be playable. At least MS said that not all titles will play on the 360. Yet an other SOny lie.

|Yes but if you put a 360 in a store with a PS3 the 360 wins =0.

"PS3 Sales Slide Further" Hmm there is a pattern here.

|What did that have to do with gaming? Also I'm sure all Xbox 360 games will work in all Xbox 360's, regardless if it's Core, Premium or Elite. You just like cuming up with BS.

|"I think you will find the Playstation brand has sold over 260 million (PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP)."
I dont know for certain but think you will find that the gameboy line has kinda smashed those numbers.

|The PS3 is taking last place this year. The facts are right in front of you.

|But Wii will sell the most overall. That doesen't matter though because I don't consider it next gen. It will be able to run the stripped down games developed for it, but you can only expect it to go so far with its limited hardware. The real race is between 360 and PS3, and because Wii is sucking so much of PS3's early sales, there is an oppurtunity for it to bomb.
If Microsoft can make the best use of this crucial time window, they can emerge victorious over the PS3. They can do this by lowering the price, bundling with games, giving us the 65nm cores and making the best use of their saving grace.....Halo 3.
If MS can capitalise well on Halo 3, its sayoonara PS3.
