Sony Affirms PS3 Shipment Targets

By the Betanews Staff | Published December 14, 2006, 11:40 AM

Attempting to soothe concerned consumers over a lack of PlayStation 3 shipments in the market, Sony reaffirmed its target to sell six million consoles by the end of March. Company executives said bringing manufacturing costs down and ensuring a solid line of games is also a high priority. The launch of the PS3 has been a rocky one for Sony: delays in components and last minute troubles conspired to delay the console by over a half a year.

Executives are still not disclosing how well they expect to do during the holiday season, although analysts have said that it expects the company to sell between 500,000 and 750,000 consoles. This is less than half of the two million consoles the Japanese electronics maker originally projected to have available.

The title is basically to get you to read the article but the sales figures and the rest of the article says something else.

At least post a link to some real figures and don't just read the title and wet your pants.

You are somehow confusing the amount of PS3's out there with Blu_Ray movie sales. We all know there is about a 4 to 1 of PS3's to HD-DVD add-ons.

But why is no one still buying BD movies?

Show me that dedicated BD players are outselling HD-DVD and I will shut up, but you can't because it's not true. Same goes for the movie titles, BD is slowly becoming UMD, no one wants them and HD-DVD is simply better.

You have no idea how to present an argument.

BD is getting one bad article after another, I can produce 50 of them if you'd like me to. Only one article I've found says BD is the way to go and it's a better value, and it's written by someone who works at Dell.

I am not a fan of HD-DVD, I'm just not a fan of Sony or any of their proprietary formats, in which case I have to support their enemy.

Both are DRM'd to death, which will probably kill both formats. Sales have cooled off across the board for both BD and HD-DVD.

I don't care if they both fail. You probably lose sleep over this silly format war, and you don't own either player.

I have both and don't care. I'm only out $200 bucks if they both fail because at least I have both gaming systems.

I don't hate the PS3, I wouldn't have bought on if I did, it seems rock solid and is on par with the 360. The graphics seemed to be a little washed and slightly blurred on the PS3 for some games compared to the 360.

You need to actually spend some money on your "hobby" before you mouth off and post links you have nothing to do with.

I don't know if you know this but movie companies are all about money, nothing else. If they aren't making money with BD movies, they will all go to HD-DVD. Same goes for the opposite. The difference is HD-DVD movie titles are outselling BD by an average of 8 to 1.

You don't think the companies that are backing BD are sitting around saying "things will get better"? They are pacing the floor, trying to figure out when to fire the business analysts who convinced the CEO that BD would win the war.

Meanwhile, the HD-DVD camp is sitting back smiling because they have less backers, but Microsoft is in their corner. Have you heard of them?

The problem with this is the fact that so many promises were made in the past regarding PS3 that ended up being broken. Even if it is the truth, how many people at this point aren't at least a hint reluctant to believe this will actually be the case?

Again, maybe they'll do it this time; in fact they need to do it this time. At this point, sony cannot afford to make any more empty promises--they have lost the trust of many already, and believe it or not, even Mark will eventually start gradually withdrawing from sony support, IMO, if sony does nothing but make empty promises to the consumers. Am I mistaken in assuming this, Mark?

If I were at sony, I'd say this: quit making comments about any figures, unless they are so very 100% absolutely sure that if a meteorite destroyed one of the PS3 production factories, they could STILL pull it off. Sony cannot afford to come short. With this promise, they had better be able to deliver...even fanboys can only be lied to so many times before they catch on.

I originally hated sony for the rootkit fiasco, but I'm realising that sony's death will be a bad thing in the long run no matter who you are, because less competition=higher prices. I am actually going to say that I do HOPE sony gets their act together, because if they don't, they could be in some serious financial trouble. They must have spent equivilent to millions and millions of USD on this PS3, heck the CPU is bigger than any server CPU on the market! A _complete_ PS3 failure could actually put sony close to their demise, just because they wouldn't get any return on their already huge invesment. I truley hope sony has learned from this and continues to learn for ours and their own good.

Installed without consent and hidden from the OS = malware, malicious or not.

I didn't know Sony was my boss, and I didn't know my home PC was any of their business. In the situation you described though if the worker actually owns it and the boss puts some type of spying program on there without the workers permission than yes he is absolutely installing malware.

Did you know virus authors could use the rootkit on Sony's CDs to completely hide their viruses from the OS and antivirus programs? I'm sure Sony BMG thought all about that though in their quest to stop those evil people from ripping their own legally owned CDs. Nope, actually they didn't give a rat's behind. Even after it all came out they tried to stand behind their decision for a long time. In any event, a company secretly installing hidden files on your PC that can jeopardize it's security is WRONG. You can rant until you are blue in the face trying to defend them but it is still going to be wrong. If you'll recall the the courts agreed and Sony paid the price.

"People got pissy because it enforced copy protection"

No, people got pissy because the rootkit was installed even if you did NOT agree to the EULA. Meaning, it was installed no matter what, even if you declined. Rootkits are in fact malware in 99.9% of all cases, because they're almost always exploited. Just because Sony themselves did not use it in a malicious way, it doesn't mean others wouldn't exploit it. The fact is, Sony installed something on people's computers, with or without their permission. This something was dangerous enough that others could easily abuse it. If I remember correctly, you could prefix the name of any file or folder with $sys$ or something similar in order to completely hide it from the operating system. I would call that very malicious.

When Microsoft makes a mistake like this, where they unintentionally provide an avenue for hackers and malware makers, everybody goes nuts over it and the flaming and complaining never stops. Should Sony be treated any different? I don't think so.

Considering a boss probably has the authority (and legal right) to put monitoring software on company hardware, it wouldn't matter to me. I don't own the said pc. Course I'd like to know so I don't get busted wasting 3 hours of my day at Fark. Then again, I'm not an office monkey, so what my bosses do doesn't affect me.

"I think not, whilst it may be lawfully wrong, it's not malware..."

Wait, so it can be illegal, but still okay since it's not "malware"? Well that makes it perfectly fine! Sony has no excuse for the rootkit.

Not true, it has to be malicious to be malware, that's where the MAL comes from.. duh, some people here are really thick..

"Mostly" Against the Law. If this was not a sneak attack, why not spell it out up front and let us make the final decision on what we wish to install in our computers?
But I guess that's ok. They are a big corporation, not some teenager playing hack.

You are correct, my point was that being installed without consent and being hidden made it malware regardless of what the software does.

Sorry, we all can't as smart as you...

"The features have not changed on PS3"

Changes since the first announced PS3 to the current PS3:
- 2 HDMI's, currently one
- 3 Eithernet ports with a switch (or roughter, I can't remember for sure), currently one
- 6 USB ports, currently 4

Also they laughed at Microsoft for coming out with 2 versions of the 360, then they turned around and did it them selves.

It also reminds me of when they said that the PS2 was supposed to have "Toy Story" like graphics. Have you seen any that good? I haven't.
