Sony All But Confirms PS3 Delay
By Ed Oswald | Published March 6, 2006, 6:16 PM
Sony may have come the closest to an admission that the PlayStation 3 would indeed be delayed in a story about its CEO in a prominent entertainment paper. An article in Variety claims that issues relating to the chips controlling the Blu-ray drive are causing the delay.
While Variety says holiday 2006 is the launch date, CEO Howard Stringer is not quoted as the source of that information. Many analysts believe that the console would likely not be available in the US until early 2007, following a holiday launch in Asia.
The move would mean the Xbox 360 console would be a year ahead of its largest competitor, which could be a problem for Sony. Supplies of the Xbox 360 as well as videogame availability would be much higher than the PS3 during the crucial holiday season, which could lead frustrated gamers to opt for the easier-to-obtain Xbox.
Analysts had long expected the Blu-ray drive to cause problems for the launch of the next-generation console. In late February, Merrill Lynch analysts speculated that the drive could push the bill of materials to as much as $800 USD or more per console, which could financially strap the company.
"From a hardware standpoint, the largest exposure outside of Sony itself is Microsoft, which could benefit if the company is able to overcome supply problems with Xbox 360," Merrill Lynch wrote in the research note.
But this doesn't seem to have Stringer worried. If the PS3 "delivers what everyone thinks it will, the game is up," he told Variety.
Ken Kutaragi said the November launch will be worldwide, sony will unleash one million units per month with a total of six million units by the end of the fiscal year March 2007.Kutaragi confirmed that a 60GB hard drive, which will support Linux, will ship with the system out of the box. The PS3 will be 100% backwards compatible with PS1 and PS2 games. Furthermore, it will upscale old games into high defintion.

Sure 9 cores sounds great on the surface, however the Software development industry has been slow in adopting multicore software development.
having multiple cores = a synchronization nightmare.
Alot of game developers have gone on the record as far as saying that it will take a couple of years for multicore gaming to really make its mark. They have gone as far as saying that what can be hoped for the near future is to have 1 core deal with game mechanics and another core for AI.
You have to understand, that up until a few months ago, everything was thought of in a single lane(perse) path. GameDevs hated using multithread cause of the overhead and unless totally necesary they never implemented it in their games(necesary would be networking).
So we will have to wait for the Game Industry to rethink its development protocols before we really see what Multicore processing will really do for software in general.
Like others have said. ATM PS3 is vaporware. Until I see a running playable prototype ill continue to be very scheptic of it.
Also a side note, so far from what Ive heard from friends in the Industry, the SDK documentation for the PS3 is as bad as it was for the PS2. This is not a good sign at all, since it took devs quiet a while to get a hang of the PS2 language.

|I agree they were a risk, but that is how you get ahead. Maybe too many new features in one unit, but - Oh Well!
It just sounds like Blue-ray is the problem though. If they are making players now and will be selling them in the coming month, then what is the deal with the PS3? Why is it different? Is this just Sony being overly protected of their content, or real compatible issues?

|I agree with the analyst that said that Nintendo's Revolution could gain a huge market share by way of being many people's 2nd console (so to speak). More people will get a 360 and Rev. or a PS3 and Rev. than will get both the 360 and PS3.

|I don't think it's a surprise about the delay, and I think it's most likely going to be true, but I also think a delay and the news coverage is going to add to the hype and marketability. Even a delay with this kind of publicity will be good news for Sony.

|IMO delays like this don't build hype, they just make the product into a joke. It's not good news for Sony, it makes them look incompetant.

Timing will be the key. If they wait too long and after Xmas2006, I feel it will hurt them. Those that had been waiting, could opt to buy the Xbox360 which was limited in supply earlier and will have a wide selection of games to choose from. Most of which will be the parents of kids that are doing the buying.

|Mark, I hardly think they crashed! Maybe you could give me a source for this info. In spite of the heat issue that plagued the media, it was over-hyped. The Xbox360 was a very popular and hot item to buy. In all, people were very satisfied with it.
I also think it is funny that you are putting Sony above MS and not on the same level. Look back at the PS1 and PS2.
I am a Sony fan of their games, but I dislike their console and it has heat issues. It comes down to games and performance.

|Actually 360's did crash. The only problem is that this was a very low percentage, but $ony fanboys make it appear like 50% of the systems crashed... It was probably more closely to 1-5% I defenitely see myself buying both systems because they all have thier excluasive releases. I dont care much for the blu-ray on the PS3 though, because Ill have an HD DVD player before that :-/

|What about the whole "High def DVD formats require HDCP in order to prevent piracy and utilize their quality benefits and any monitor/television set that is not HDCP-enabled will have their resolution downgraded to xx% of its full potential"? Isn't this going to affect the games if they do indeed utilize this new technology? I ask because 98% of the customer base is still using either old tube-based television sets or have non-HDCP-enabled HDTV's. Wouldn't this degrade the performance and cause the overall enjoyment factor to diminish to less-than-appealing? I currently don't own any gaming systems aside from a GameBoy Advance SP because I am a PC gamer, and while I think Microsoft had a shoddy release of the 360, at least you didn't have to update your television to enjoy the next-gen games. I could be wrong on all this, but considering its become a hot topic in the video world, its only a matter of time before the gaming world will have to succumb to this ugly truth.

|Actually this issue about copy protection and downgrading is only relevant to movies, not gaming. But yeah, there won't be much of a need for a blu-ray PS3, because unless you have an HDTV and an HDMI connection (component cables dont have HDCP, therefore they automatically get downgraded), all the movies will be downgraded to the standard DVD resolution of 780x420. So PS3 owners are basically getting the same old DVD player from the PS2!!

|This isn't even going to be a "generation" thing anymore. When that vaporware ps3 sees the light of day, 360 is halfway through its life. So what? If fanboys want to wait for PS3, please do. If Microsoft gets their units out soon (ordered mine today, no bundle, from KMart.com believe it or not), I think the top two positions will be s***ed.
The same thing happened with Sega and Sony. Sega pwned the market, Sonic the Hedgehog and all. Then they goofed hard on an overambitious console. Playstation popped its head in, and here we are. Oh, how history repeats itself.
If you're still looking for a 360, there's an easy place to find one - xbox360tracker.com. It worked for me! Platinum system shipped, no bundle. Patience is key!

|Thanks for the 360 link, I ordered one myself, Thanks again. I just wanted to comment on sega, and its dreamcast. What made them go down was not overambition, it was a loss of sales due to piracy. Sega messed up hardcore, so much that they developed a gaming system that was easily cracked. Immagine a system where you can play bootleg games WITHOUT a mod-chip. Last I remember hearing is that sega was loosing %80 of their profits to piracy. It was actually a smart move on thier part to quit while there was still a company left. Ironically they went ahead and made games for Nintendo...

|HD-DVD mainly benefits record companies by lowering their production costs while Blu-Ray mainly benefits consumers with its higher quality video and extra capacity. |Blu-Ray and HD-DVD both use the exact same codecs, and the extra space on Blu-Ray was already pointed out useless for movies since they won't need that much. It's going to cost much more and that definately doesn't benefit the consumer. My money is on HD-DVD, I believe Blu-Ray will fail in the market.

|Movie studios are all about being cheap and saving money just like the record companies. SACD's sounded better than DVD-Audio discs but record companies chose to go with DVD-Audio in most cases because they could cut costs since DVD-Audio used PCM. This meant that some or all of the channels could contain audio sampled at 48KHz which is clearly not high resolution.
Hybrid SACD's were also 100% compatible with the CD audio spec but again the record companies chose a new standard (the DualDisc) which sacrificed compatibility with CD audio because it saved them money.
