Sony Announces In-Game Ad Division
By the Betanews Staff | Published October 8, 2007, 3:58 PM
With the PlayStation 3 not generating the revenue Sony expected, it now appears that the company is looking at in-game advertising to turn its gaming division around. The new division will be headed by Darlene Kindler, a two-and-a-half decade veteran of the consumer electronics industry. She will assume the title of network advertising director, and report to Sales and Business Development chief Phil Rosenberg.
Kindler will be tasked with developing an in-game advertising strategy for all of Sony's PlayStation platforms, as well as advertising within the PlayStation Network. She had most recently worked with Adscape Media, an in-game advertising company that was acquired by Google in March, and previous to that had worked at Nintendo as part of the company's start-up team. Sony did not say when the advertising would begin to appear in its games.

|In game ad's have been around for a long time. It's called product placement. It happens on TV in movies, games..... It includes just about everthing from cars, watches, soft drinks, condoments, and yes even music. $50-$60 for a game? How much would games cost if companies didn't place their products in this manner?

I would have thought that better games would have turned their gaming division around... silly me. *sigh*
Enough with all of this advertising crap. It isn't enough that we should be expected to pay upwards of $60 for a game, only to be bombarded with advertisements within? I would expect something of that nature if the game was free, but this is getting ridiculous.
Why not simply follow Microsoft's lead in the games department if they want to honestly turn things around. Let's have some good games for a change, and let's see what this all-mighty PS3 can really do! C'mon... it's almost been a year already!
I can almost see it now: a "new and improved" controller for the PS3 with a "Buy Now!" button in the middle shaped like a $. I'll bet that it would be one of the only functions on their worthless game pad that works as advertised.

So this news is news as such and something to read.
Please tell me, what news site doesn’t report something like this simply because someone else has already done it?
Get off your high horse
Do you people really have nothing better to do than claim spin spin spin every time a article comes out that doesn’t favour Sony in the way you would like?
What’s making this site pathetic is people who cant produce a decent argument/conversation to those idiots that rant hddvd/360/ps3/blu-ray. So you keep making those idiots look smarter when in fact you should be beating them down.

Blame Sony for all of their bad press they've been receiving lately. Blame them for leaving millions of people with a wasted investment that can play a few decent movies and a handful of mediocre games after being on the market for almost a full year. Blame them for all of their false claims and promises of a format plagued with problems that still isn't finished 1½ years after it launched.
Better yet, blame yourself while you're at it for blindly believing everything Sony has told you so far.

Are you forgetting that XBOX does it too or are testing it to do it too? If this keeps Home free and Sony makes money and it lowers the price of the system even more, I'm sure people won't mind. What's the big deal if it's done tastefully? Like if the GTA character wears Nike's and Levis while carjacking a Honda and crashing into a bus stop that has an ad for a movie due in theaters this holiday?
But you ladies get together and it doesn’t matter who else does it and how it's done. As long as the story says Sony, you guys say it's desperation and hate it.

Adverts in games would merely serve to remind me, whether pop-up or subtle livery on a racing car, that the real world exists, diminshing the effect of playing the game.
The stick of gum - Airwaves, was it? - in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was bad enough. It annoyed me that a character I was controlling and basically becoming in order to complete the game was trying to sell me things. The last thing I want is for this type of thing to become more common.
