Sony Announces PlayStation 3 Pricing
By Ed Oswald | Published May 9, 2006, 11:18 AM
Sony late Monday solidified its commitment to release the PlayStation 3 this fall in North America, announcing a release date of November 17 as well as pricing on two models to be made available at launch. Also as expected, the next-generation console will debut with a steep price tag.
A PS3 model with a 20GB HDD will retail for USD $499 USD, while a 60GB version will set the gamer back USD $599 USD. However, it's likely that most gamers will opt for the more expensive console, as the basic model is missing several key features.
The $499 version will not include MemoryStick, SD, and CompactFlash ports, as well as wireless networking. Additionally, no HDMI support is provided with the low-end model, which will cripple its compatibility with high-definition televisions.
Sony would make two million consoles available at launch, with a second two million shipping by the end of the year. By the end of March, six million consoles will have shipped, Sony Computer Entertainment of America president and chief executive officer Kaz Hirai said at a press conference.
Hirai also reviewed the PS3's feature set, including its Cell processor, backwards compatibility, and built in Ethernet and hard disk drive. The console would also be able to play back Blu-ray movies and support full HD on the high-end model.
Taking a jab at Microsoft, Hirai said Sony was taking more time to ensure that the console met its standards and delivered the technological jump that it promised. Microsoft will have beaten Sony by a full year at the PS3's launch with the Xbox 360.
"We're not about cutting corners to get to market," he chided.

|PS3 Pricing is good. Whilst even the basic version may be out of reach for some, prices will fall.
The 1st wave of adopters will be the ones with the cash to spend, and are likely to buy the full version anyway. I'm sure Sony realise this. The basic version is there is dampen the critism about the price of the full version, as people have the option to buy the cheaper one.
The lack of HMDI is the only thing I think they messed up on. I think they should have kept HDMI, and removed the wireless motion sensor controllers, and used standard wired controllers instead, thereby giving the people to upgrade from the basic to the more advanced setup (you cannot "add HDMI" ports in a upgrade fashion).

|Ok, aside from Sony's contempt for customers, I have an additional thing to add.
When the PS3 debuts, there will be shortages. Also, Xbox 360 will be on 2nd generation titles. That is HUGE, cause that means the games will be better than the first gen games available on the few PS3's when it launches. Also, don't forget, the US is the second market for Sony, they are NOT a US company.
Further, blue ray has not beaten HD-DVD, so a PS3 doesn't gaurantee anything in the HD market, it could be an expensive lemon.
For HD, its best to wait for the LG player that will be released by X-MAS that will support both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray (further it will surpass MS's stupid 720p HD-DVD player).
Basically, if you like games, get an XBox 360 now, in another year or two you might be able to pick up a PS3, but you can have next gen today (check out the Superman game trailer for XBox 360).
Have fun.. and please don't waste money on Sony crap :)

|Well personally I don't really care for your pro American preaching.
I want the best console, rather than just buying because Microsoft are an American company.
PS3 is the console for me. It's the only console that is truely HD. MS may claim the XBox360 is HD, but even with the HD-DVD add-on it's looking like it's not.
Whilst PS3 pricing may not be cheap, if you want quality, you have to pay for it. The bottom line, is you get what you pay for. If you buy a £299 console, you only get $299 worth of console, if you pay $599, you get $599 worth.
There is now no doubt Blu-Ray will win the HD format war, as even the basic console has a Blu-Ray player. Blu-Ray writers are a mere £600, which may seem expensive at the moment, will plumet in price once production ramps, and the 1st wave of buyers have spent their money.
That said I do think Sony's decision to omit the HDMI port from the basic model is a mistake, as it would be a definate one up on the XBox360 now we know it does not have HDMI either. I wouldn't put it past Sony to change the spec of the basic model to add the HDMI now we know XBox 360 HD-DVD does not have one.

OK, so this is a testament to the PS3, it will look as good as the Xbox 360, before it wasn't quite as good.
There is big difference under the hood so to speak, for one there will be a dual processor, and things will be faster on the PS3.
Gimmicks and Games with Gimmicks are different things. GM isn't about Add-ons for your car, but they do make aftermarket products to enhance performance and looks of GM vehicles, same with Honda. They don't endorse them directly, but they are available, because people like to mod them. Sony won't make gimmicks for the PS3, but they will be available. Maybe he worked for a software vendor, and that's why he prefaced his speech with "Sony isn't about gimmicks..."
Its not the same thing.

|Did Sony announce addons to replace the card readers and HDMI? Cause if not, I don't see why anyone would buy the cheaper version, atleast someone who actually wanted the PS3 for what it was promised to be. If they are smart, they will do like Microsoft and allow those with less money to buy a console and then buy the addons at a later time to bring it's features up to the more expensive model. Seems to me like they are punishing those with less money by forever limiting their consoles abilities.

He claimed that a surprising number of PS2 titles are already working on PS3 prototype hardware, and revealed that the emulation tricks being used to mimic the behaviour of the notoriously complex PS2 processors are getting whole swathes of game titles up and running on an ongoing basis."
The Inquirer's spin:

GamesIndustry.biz has hatched a story quoting a source in Sony's UK studios saying backwards compatibility has become a real problem."

Sounds like they are doing well considering how hard it is. 100% though is a tough one, no matter if it is Sony or someone else. It all depends how many people/man hours they want to devote to doing this and getting the last few % of games working, especially if they were low sellers.

Games are made by other companies other than Sony, so they won't control the price.. but the games are pretty much the same price across the board, PC, PS2, Xbox.. Some PC games are cheaper, because the console games are eating the PC's lunch.. because we don't want to spend the 300 bucks to upgrade the video to support that new game..
Which is WHY I don't understand people complaining about PS3 price.. when did the PS2 come out, I know its been at least 5 years.. because it was released right before the Dreamcast.. so if you do the math, 600 bucks, that's about ~100 bucks a year, that's not bad, compare that to avg computer components a year..

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are vying for control of the video game industry, which according to market research firm NPD Group, saw sales drop 5 percent to $7 billion in the United States last year. Much of it is blamed on consumers' desire to hold out for the PS3 and Wii.
Microsoft said it has sold about 3.2 million Xbox 360s so far — about half of them are used online. By this time next year, the company expects to have sold 10 million units and have 6 million online subscribers.*

*Ukrainian sentenced in US software piracy case

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A Ukrainian man extradited to the United States from Thailand on software piracy charges has been sentenced to 35 months in prison, the U.S.
Department of Justice said on Tuesday.

Maksym Vysochansky, 28, was arrested in Thailand in 2003 on charges of selling pirated software of Adobe Systems, Microsoft, Autodesk and other firms through Internet sites such as eBay.
He was arrested after U.S. officials monitoring his e-mail traffic learned he would travel from Ukraine to Thailand, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California said in a statement.
Vysochansky, also known as Maksym Kovalchuk, was extradited to the United States in 2004 and pleaded guilty to the charges last November. He was sentenced on Monday.
Software piracy is widespread in many parts of the former Soviet Union. Prosecutors in Northern California, which is home to some of the world's best-known software companies including Adobe, have launched several high-profile anti-piracy cases.
The U.S. Attorney's office listed his name as Vysochanskyy, although it is commonly transliterated as Vysochansky.*

Sony will also sell a PS3 with a 60-gigabyte hard drive for $599 in the United States. All Sony's units will include a Blu-ray high-definition DVD player. Microsoft's premium Xbox 360 package, which does not include an advanced DVD player and has a 20-gigabyte hard drive, costs $400, by comparison.
"As just a game console it is expensive, but not if you think about it as an entertainment center," said Koichi Ogawa, chief portfolio manager at Daiwa SB Investments. "The price may be somewhat tough for Sony. If you consider the costs, the price probably should be higher."
The larger hard drive allows users to store more games, music and other downloaded content onto the PS3, while some software developers said the extra storage capacity allowed the machine to load games faster.
Sony's Bluetooth-powered motion-sensitive wireless controller is shaped like the controller for the current generation machine, but the advanced controller can s*** objects in games when a player moves the unit, without pushing buttons. In a demonstration, a virtual duck lifted out of a tub of water when the controller was jerked upward.
Sony expects to hit the market with 2 million PS3 consoles at launch and a total of 4 million by the end of December 2006. Analysts expect Microsoft to ship up to 8 million Xbox 360 units before Sony launches the PS3.
Ken Kutaragi, Sony's game unit head, also known as the "father of the PlayStation," told Reuters that this would be a huge year for the video game industry and Microsoft's early advantage was not a great concern.
"We have not paid much attention to market share in the past, and that is still the case," Kutaragi said on the sidelines of the Sony news conference.
The success of the PS3 is crucial for Sony as a company.
At stake is not only continued dominance in the game industry but leadership in the next generation of DVDs, the commercial viability of the Cell processor that powers the PS3 and possibly control over the future living-room electronics around the world.
It's also an expensive bet.
Tokyo-based Sony plans to take a 100 billion yen operating loss at its game division in the current fiscal year due to costs related to the PS3 launch. Game machines manufacturers often lose money on the initial sale, but recoup those losses over the life of the product through software sales.
"Unless there are some amazing launch titles that turn up in the next six months, I think it's going to be pretty tough going for Sony," said Hiroshi Kamide, game analyst for KBC Securities. "It's still going to lose money hand over fist at these prices."*

I mean, look at the history. Sony has been copying Nintendo since the beggining.
Lets take a history tour shall we?
Playstation 1: Was originally a joint venture between Nintendo and Sony to create an addon cd-rom for the SNES, this fell through.
2. Then we have sony throwing money at all the Nintendo publishers like Square to get them to go exclusive with them.
3. N64 releases. A nice little analog stick on the controller. Sony then puts 2 analog sticks on the PS1 controller(since 2 is better than 1 right?) Even though hardly any PS1 titles take advantage of the feature.
4. Nintendo introduces the Rumble Pack. Here comes the PS2 with the Dual-Shock 2 controller, OH LOOOK IT VIBRATES!!.
5. Nintendo introduces the Wii Controller, 1year later sony decides to throw away the boomerang and come up with a last minute dualshockless controller that has tilt response but it doesnt shock.

However, even I must admit that comparing the "cheap" Xbox 360 to the "cheap" PS3--the cheap PS3 will sell more than the cheap 360. I guess you could say it is "less crippled" being that it at least HAS a hard drive.
Still--Sony is underestimating the power of $$$ affecting consumer choice (to some degree, I suppose,so is Microsoft). Wii, as horrid as the name is, will sell more because it will be drastically lower-priced. However, enthusiasts and the older "gamers" will stick with the PS3 and 360 for primary gaming. All I'm saying is that when kids beg their parents this year for a PS3 "or an Xbox 360" for Christmas, guess what? Parents will buy the 360. Mark and the other sony fans will of course buy the PS3 alone, but how many people are like that? I prefer the 360 because I like it better, I like the price a little better, and I prefered the Xbox to the PS2. I am not choosing it because I hate sony (though I am disappointed in them as of recent times), or because I am "a Microsoft fanboy". If the PS4, or whatever it'll be, comes out lower priced than the XBOX 720/YBOX/whatever, and the PS4 games are better, I will choose the PS4.
Point is, I am not "bound" to Microsoft--I just wanted to clarify that.
"However, it's likely that most gamers will opt for the more expensive console, as the basic model is missing several key features...The $499 version will not include MemoryStick, SD, and CompactFlash ports, as well as wireless networking..."
HAHAHA, even I must admit that exclusion of the compactflash readers and such will have little if any affect on choosing between the $500 and $600 version. Mark Gillespie doesn't even have to point that out.
"... Additionally, no HDMI support is provided with the low-end model, which will cripple its compatibility with high-definition televisions."
Does it truly "cripple" HDTV compatibility? I don't see how--it'll work with them, just not show all that it would if it were the $600 version.
I am actually surprised that Sony does truly have, IMO, a decent "base" system. If I were planning to buy a PS3 (currently I am not), I would certainly buy the cheaper one, which I could NEVER even CONSIDER for the "base" 360.

|I think Nintento are targetting a much younger gamer than the gamers Sony and Microsoft are targetting. This is WHY the Nintendo WII has to be cheaper, as it's the parents who will be spending the money.
The markets Sony and Microsoft are competing in, is aimed at your 20yr-35yr old gamer market, where many of these will be buying with their own money, and want a much more powerful and feature complete system.
Whilst many people are saying the basic PS3 is crippled, it's not as badly crippled as the XBox 360 core, and the top end PS3 is better featured than the top end XBox 360.
So the market will look like this (from cheapest feature light, to expensive feature full)
WII
Xbox 360 Core
PS3 Basic
XBox 360 Full
XBox 360 Full with bundled HD-DVD.
PS3 Full
Unless the XBox360 HD-DVD add-on is less than $100 and the Xbox360 gets a price drop, it's still cheaper to buy a PS3 basic with Blu-Ray.
The only thing that Sony have screwed up, is the lack of HDMI on the basic model, with no obvious upgrade path to add one. Meaning Blu-Ray movies played on a basic PS3 MAY (depending on the content providor) be downsampled to DVD quality. This reason alone means that it's worth paying the extra $100 for the full (unless you plan not to own a HD-Ready TV in this console generation).
The lack of HDMI on the basic system, and the prospect of downsampled movies, if the studio decide that they want to, means myself and many others I suspect will opt for the more expensive version.

.... in other words ..... until this new standard "DisplayPort" is more widely adapted, console makers will have to wait to see what to bundle their systems with.

Well, as it will be unable to decode AACS/HDCP material, you will not see an HD picture, but you will be able to play all of your home movies that you burn on your OTHER Blu-Ray burner! Whoopee!
So when's the party to watch your home movies?

PS3 specs may be WAAAAAY better than the 360, I can't agree or disagree on that yet. My point is that I prefer the Xbox because:
1. It is cheaper;
2. I personally prefer the games on Xbox vs. PS2 games. I liked some of the old Playstation classic games like Twisted Metal and Tekken, but can't name any other Playstation exclusive games I really enjoyed past those (FFVII rocks, but I still have the PC version with an unofficial Windows XP compatible patch);
3. I've invested in Xbox games and gear, I really like Halo and KOTOR series games, and haven't really liked any recent FF games and such.
Basically, the games and controller are mostly the deciding factors for me, and the price is a big factor as well.

|PS3 obviously isn't aiming for the same audience as Nintendo is. PS3 will no doubt sell with the hardcore gaming audience. Nintendo will sell to people who don't care how many polys are in Halo 3 or MGS4. They want fun games that they can pick up and play without having to spend hours and hours on.
I didn't buy an X360 because it was too expensive (£280 before any games, plus other extras such as a second controller) so call it £400 realistically. Now if it is £600 for the PS2 that will be like £750-800 before it is a full purchase (game, second controller, decent (not the cheap supplied cable for video), etc.) Sorry but that is way too much for me. I am looking at the Wii and thinking, providing the price isn't too high (say £150), I will pick one up as the controller looks pretty fun for when we have friends over, much like how Mario Tennis is fun now in 4 player when we have friends over.
The Wii isn't trying to compete with the PS3 however it kinda looks like Sony IS trying to compete with the Wii. The controller is fun on the Wii but on the PS3 it looks kinda desperate, the PS3 (much like the X360) is just about raw power, they shouldn't worry about the casual gamers, the product isn't priced for them.

"Not sure where you got $600 from, there is no way PS3 will be that much, it would be commercial suicide.. Sony know that, we know that.."
Well Mark, it looks according to your own words Sony has committed suicide. Of course you are now back peddling like crazy and acting like it's not so bad at all.
"The only thing that Sony have screwed up, is the lack of HDMI on the basic model, with no obvious upgrade path to add one."
The ONLY thing?
"The lack of HDMI on the basic system, and the prospect of downsampled movies, if the studio decide that they want to, means myself and many others I suspect will opt..."
To pass on the PS3. It's too expensive for what little they are offering. I just watched the E3 Nintendo conference, and they blew Sony away.

|I agree with all your points. My xbox replaced my PS, N64 and Dreamcast. It was so good, I opted for the 360 instead of waiting for the PS3. IT also had to do with my preferring the 360 game selection too.
As far as PS3 specs being WAAAAAY better? A Pentium 3.6Ghz processor is WAAAAAY better than an old 486 system. But a 3.6Ghz processor is far from WAAAAAY better than anything above a 2Ghz system. And the differences between 360 and PS3 are even smaller.

|Having trouble with your numbers? PS3 is not $600, it's $499.
At lest the HDMI is optional, you want one? Buy the $599, if not buy the $499.
Xbox360, you have no HDMI, and it's looking like even the HD-DVD add-on won't have one based on MS suggestions...

Its either you appease the kids and give them what THEY want, or never hear the end of it.
That's why they target the kids, and not the parents.. its what the KIDS want, not what Parents can find cheap. That's the way it goes.

|Yeah same here, there are numerous boards that contend HDMI doesn't provide any enhancement over standard SVGA or DVI.
I researched it myself, been to the store, I can't see any real difference, or none at all. Even the sales people can't explain how HDMI is better, so if it gets that hard to explain.. then the cost/benefit isn't that great.

|*The Wii isn't trying to compete with the PS3...*?
WHAT??!?!? You can't be serious. Nintendo doesn't want to compete with Sony or Xbox, huh. I guess you know more than their marketing team, because that's NOT what they say.
We at Nintendo are content to be the 3rd place console gaming experience. We are just enjoying catering to the 12 people that use our product, and we just like to go to all this trouble to promote a console, that won't even come CLOSE to the Xbox or PS3. We enjoy our very small niche in the market, and we really don't want to grow as a company...
Yeah, right!

Oh, well! Trash the standard then! The experts have spoken! And lay off the rest of those idjets who bothered to take those silly engineering courses! I thought they were a little weird from the beginning!
Gee, but if the 19 year old BestBuy SALES people can't explain it... ;-)
The standard requires the HDMI interface. At this point it doesn't matter if they required an interface consisting of marshmellows, the standard is already defined using this interface. Whether it is the best or the worst connector is a moot point at this point of the discussion! They are not proposing the standard! It has already been defined! They have already determined the set of rules by which the process is defined.
So you either play by them or are incompatible.
Thus your equipment is interoperable by virtue that you adhere to the standard or it is not. And if you are not compliant, your equipment thus breaks the chain and your equipment, or additional equipment downstream of yours, may not function properly.
All of this is a moot point. Anyone is free to do whatever they please! But this simply means that there is an increased chance that this equipment will be limited in its functional capabilities or in its ability to interface with other equipment adhering to the uniform standard.
Why are you persisting in debating what the standard SHOULD be? Its a bit late for that! Now you deal with it!

But I don't care...after seeing the E3 Wii video that's the only console I'm looking forward to...graphics only get so good, do I really care if I see 1000 strands of moving hair on the characters as oposed to 800 strands of moving hair?

|Sony and Microsoft are going after gamers who want amazing graphics. Nintendo is going after people who remember playing games as a kid/teenage and would like to play games again but doesn't want to spend $600 on a console because they have other pirorities in life now (house, mortgage, family, etc.). I see that as aiming for different markets.
