Sony: Celebrities Like the PlayStation 3
By Nate Mook | Published November 9, 2006, 2:25 PM
Because consumers apparently follow what celebrities do, Sony last night held an invitation-only party to let Hollywood's hottest young stars play the PlayStation 3 before its official launch on November 17. The company also showed off the Blu-ray disc capabilities of the new console.
Largely an excuse to take photographs of actors and musicians trying out the PS3, Sony held the event in Beverly Hills and invited the likes of David Arquette, Nick Cannon, James Franco, Nicole Richie, and, of course, Paris and Nicky HIlton. Diddy, formerly Puff Daddy, gave a special concert to the A-listers at the end of the night. Microsoft held a similar event for the launch of the Xbox 360 last year.
At the risk of sounding like a Mark supporter, let's see what this thing can actually do after it's released.
It's hard to bash or praise a product you don't own or have never played.
If you want to be Joe Cool, buy a 360 w/HD-DVD and a PS3. You will be able to buy any movie, any game and be happy.
As for the Wii, I have no desire to find out what it can do, I really dont like the remote/controller and the console is pretty 1984 looking.

Proof that only the stupid like the PS3.
Since 66% of the population is stupid, the PS3 should be a great success.
Score: 0
|well this of course depends on your definition of "stupid", I myself would have put the figure much higher, at say 95% of the population is stupid.

Oh come on. Does anybody care about what these people think about anything? These people are either hardly celebrities or famous just for being famous.

|What does paris hilton know about a PS3, maybe how to turn it on? I dont think anyone of those people knows anything about it just that it works and it looks good. How could they critique something they know nothing about? Its just marketing.

|what i dont get it is why market it now? there are not enough units as it is. all consoles from this lousy launch can be considered sold already.
let's imagine a huge fan of britney that wants to get a PS3 and now he sees his idol getting one. so now he wants it even more... the problem is he can want one to the point of no longer being able to hold his own bladder - he still can't get a PS3 because they can't manufacture them fast enough!!! and he is not going to get one for long time. that is if he is from USA. the rest of the world can just forget about those for a year or so. ehhh... poor Mark...
although it will be kinda cool to watch live footage of ninjas fighting for a PS3 all over tokio.

|Perhaps everyones eyes automatically jump over the "Microsoft held a similar event for the launch of the Xbox 360 last year."
Or in their excitement about being able to post another PS3 hater comment...
Score: 0
|What does that have to do with anything?
So celebrities have played and liked both systems. BFD! Unless they are die hard gamers too (which is unlikely), I don't think their opinion matters whatsoever.
Score: 0
|Yeah and that was stupid too, but this article isn't about that. Are you going to cry "What about Microsoft" every time a Sony article gets posted? Fanboy muppet.
Score: 0
|Another thing that Sony copied Microsoft.

|Is there actually anything original that Sony did for the PS3?
I guess maybe just bluray and bluetooth?

|You guys need to loosen your grip on the mouse and get outside some more. Clearly the article was poking fun at the idea that sheep do what celebrities do. There is nothing in the article about the PS3 itself, except for making fun of Sony for following that mantra. In reality, if it didn't work companies wouldn't do it. Why do you think Nike signed LeBron James to a gigantic contract.
Teens and fans of celebrities often do what they do. Do you really think carrying a little 3 lb dog in a purse would be in style if celebrities didn't do it first? What about every time Oprah mentions a product on her show the sales go through the roof. Its just the way our world works people.
Maybe you buck the trend and go "anti-establishment" by not doing what celebrities do, but that just means you are not a sheep. Unfortunatly, generally speaking people are sheep.

|Ooooh! A company that uses celebrities to market a product--what a taboo. You guys are right; the PS3 is the devil. Let's burn it at the stake. C'mon folks, put on your overalls, grab your pitch forks, and light your torches. I'll meet you at your local Sony retailer.
Where the heck are all these comments coming from!!!?
Score: 0
|Hahah :D
You really need to get some professional help!
Score: 0
|Wow! All the PS3-hating folk are just as ignorant as their comments are difficult to read. It's very simple, you idiots: if you don't like a product, then don't buy it. I am not a gamer myself--I have better things to do in my spare time. But most of these comments reek of envy. Maybe most of you high school dropouts simply can't afford to fork down the money for a PS3. So the next best thing is to bash a company that has every right market its product. Media hegemony influences everyone whether or not you disapprove. Dumb asses!

|Lol wow! That was my good laugh of the day. Thanks nate!

|Somehow Sony's arrogance never ceases to amaze me.

|Cause if anything is going to convince me to like or buy something, it's over-paid actors and singers, and trust fund money tarts

|What's the point??? Convince us to buy PS3 or no??? ... Oh well, somethimes you lost the judgment when they return to you millions of laptop batteries you sold before.

|Good job Nate. you seem to know consumers well. Lets just hope that sony didn't include a battery...

|hmmm somehow when i wan't to by some gadget and do the product research i don't usually base my desisions on what paris or britney did or did not buy... actually i never base my desisins on that. on third thought i dont even know/care what of their choice of gadgets. although i can see some stupid spoiled teenager brat mimicing whatever their "role model " does... but does PS3 need more commercials??? how is it going to help them sell more of their consoles? they don't have enough as it is.

To me this just make the PS3 even less desirable than it already was. Paris Hilton? Gag.

|this PS3 thing is getting crazy I found this blog where people already started camping out in front of bestbuy

I also seen in a news report that on craigslist someone placed an ad for someone to go camp out in line for one of them.

|Sony hate is so last month.
It's gone beyond the realm of acceptable levels of holding a corporation accountable for their mistakes. Now with this constant nit-picking about anything that can possibly carry negative spin, it reeks of bloggers revealing their deeper social issues. I'm really sorry that people don't like you guys. But guess what? Not Sony's fault.
No I'm not paid by Sony. Just pointing out how pathetic this has become. Some guy writes "because we all do what celebreties do" and you yell at the PS3? Classic.
Oh and please, do call me a fanboy if it makes you feel better. Whatever makes your stay in the Spin-Zone more enjoyable.

|Not *you*, no.
But, worryingly there are enough idiots/naive people (and I don't use the terms lightly) out there who will suck up this kind of advertising and want the particular product, notably in the early teenagers range from 10-14 who pester their parents into submission.

|The article lost my interest before the first sentence finished "Because consumers always follow what celebrities do." Agenda for tonight includes:
Kill my wife (because I want follow OJ)
Get some hookers (because I want to follow Charlie Sheen and many others)
Get drunk and bad mouth the Jews (because I want to be like Mel Gibson)
Elope with someone from High School (Because I want to be like Britney and many others), then get an annulment Then Overdose on drugs and kill myself (Like Kurt Cobain and many others)
