Sony Cuts PS3 Price in Japan, to Debut 40GB Model

By the Betanews Staff | Published October 9, 2007, 11:00 AM

While Sony has no plans to bring the 40GB PlayStation 3 to the United States, the model is making its way from Europe to Japan. The company said the mid-range model, which unlike its brethren lacks support for PS2 games, will go on sale November 11 for 39,980 yen ($342).

In the process, Sony will drop the price of its 20GB PS3 by 10 percent as of October 17, bringing the cost down to 44,980 yen ($384). The 60GB model will also become cheaper, selling for 54,980 yen ($470). Sony is phasing out the 60GB PS3 as part of the price drops, which are being made in preparation for the holiday season. The high cost of the PlayStation 3 has hindered its ability to compete with the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Cutting the prices is still not going to push Sony, they need to start releasing some good games.

Personally, I haven't seen anything yet, where is the games that ps2 produced, why are these titles not here yet? Where are the new games with groundbreaking effects that shatter the xbox360? Where is anything on the ps3 that the xbox360 cannot do?

These are the questions Sony should be thinking, people will pay top price for a system as long as games are there, look at the xbox360 people know the system has issues yet it is still selling consoles.

True, the only game Ive seen that has the potential to be above any 360 title IMO is Drakes fortune. The graphics are just amazing and it looks like the gameplay may for once live up to the shiny finish.

Cross your fingures and hope its not another Lair.

- So where does all this leave the 80gb model in the USA?

Still @ $600?

looks like it. I am not sure how they expect to compete with the 360 and Wii this holiday.

At this point I think a buy one get one half off might help them out. One door stop for the front and one for the back of the house.

Exactly. The way the sales this fall will probably go is the Wiis are going to sell as fast as they can make them, the 360 is "probably" going to have a better year than last, and the PS3 is going to bring up the rear.

So has Sony given up on the United States?

You would think, but considering their retarded moves this week, I don't think they are smart enough to pull the plug.

Looks like Sony's arrogance got the better of them this time around.
