Sony Debuts New PS2 in Japan

By Ed Oswald | Published November 6, 2007, 12:01 PM

Sony is about to release a new version of its aging PlayStation 2 console in Japan ahead of the upcoming holiday season.

The new version is lighter than the previous model, and includes a built-in AC adaptor. An older version with an external AC adaptor weighed some 30 ounces: the new model only weighs 25.

Sony said it will sell the new PS2 at a price of 16,000 yen ($140 USD), which is the same as the previous version. There was no immediate announcement of plans to sell the new console overseas.

Keeping the PS2 alive and well is a crucial part of keeping the overall gaming division afloat. As the company is still losing a good deal of money on every PS3 it sells, the new PS2 should help it to make a larger profit on a proven platform, which has already sold some 120 million consoles worldwide.

In fact, Sony's estimates through the year to March still show its PS2 outselling the PS3 slightly -- 12 million to 11 million consoles.

I'm waiting on buying a PS2 (I have a couple games for it that I use to play at friend's) until it comes down to $100.

I won't be buying a PS3 or 360, but will get a Wii. I just want the PS2 for those couple games I have.

If sony made car's they would have a model that was like a Porsche that no-one would buy because it was too expensive,
another model that was like a 1972 Ford that ran well and was rather cheap, but mostly people would buy it because it reminded them of the first car their father owned
and they would end their lineup with a motorbike that was sold with the promise that it would one day connect to the Porsche model.

Why all the Sony bashing? PS2 has a lot of great games. It makes sense for Sony to market this PS2 to families because of its affordability. One thing Nintendo has taught Sony, don’t underestimate family gaming.
I'd be tempted to pick one up myself after my ps2 died a few months back. I sold all my games though :(

i love that i can instantly tell which games were designed with the PS2 in mind by their crappy graphics and overuse of blurry smudgy graphics, shaddows, and lighting effects. I love when somehow those games get published on other consoles and suck because of it.
/sarcasm

a good reason for ending the PS2 is the games going to PS2. It's infecting the quality of other games and that's just unacceptable.

So far I don't see multi-platform games suffering on other platforms when compared to the PS2 (if that's what you meant).

Even taking games like the Guitar Hero franchise... the Xbox 360 versions of II and III are much improved over the PS2 versions. Lighting and shadows are much better on the Xbox 360, and transparent models are non-existent on the PS2 (the 'Jurassic' tree sap guitar is a good example).

The PS2 version of multi-platform games are usually 'dumbed down' graphics-wise, and in some cases they're left alone when they should have been beefed up (like the PSP ports of GTA VCS and LCS on the PS2).

All in all though, I still enjoy my PS2 immensely... more than any of the next-gen consoles so far (though the Xbox 360 is a very close second).

I think Sony (for once) are doing something good. I like the PS2, I know nothing else, and I'm fine with it. We've enought landfill already so why not keep a product alive that offers enjoyment to millions?

I don't live to play the darn thing, but it's a fun thing to have when there's nothing else to do. I just wish there were more flight sim stuff for it, but it doesn't mean I'm rushing out to purchase a $700+ system because of that.

"Keeping the PS2 alive and well is a crucial part of keeping the overall gaming division afloat."

No kidding!

Seriously though, I'm wondering how smart it was to integrate the power supply into a console that already had marginally effective cooling.

I think the constant support of the PS2 is the reason the PS3 is not where they'd like it to be. They should stop producing them and move on. It MUST be having an effect on PS3 sales at this point.

This could have been prevented if Sony hadn't gone over board on the PS3 price. And maybe made a game or two for the PS3.

why hate on sony for this? It's PS2, a proven winner. I've never owned a PS2 or Xbox, or xbox 360 or PS3. I still have my little gamecube. Xbox 360 and PS2, older gen are still more advanced than Wii.

Are they using a newer, quieter (new die) chipset?

As a PC gamer I was going to buy the new amazing 8800 GT 512MG NVidia card. After careful thought and calculation I realized that, despite it being the most graphics power per Watt it would still cause my overall computer's fan noise (primarly my really good power supply) to always be noisier. People fail to realize that a good quality power supply with variable fan speed will have to run signifcantly louder ALWAYS to whisk away the heat generated by the higher power output.

The Wii uses roughly a tenth of the power of the XBox360 or the PS3 and the PS2 also uses much less power.

What am I willing to sacrifice for awesome graphics? Did Sony over-estimate how much the public will pay for high-end graphics despite the overall quality of the PS3?

By the time the PS4 is released and power requirements have massively dropped (not to mention an even better solution for movies, games and probably a mature Linux solution in one package) I believe the single combo/gaming console will be everything Sony's dreaming of for the PS3. (but get your act together Blu-Ray.. )

At $130 CDN for a lot of people wanting a quick game with acceptable graphics (especially to those who don't know different) the PS2 has a lot more life.

Part of the current problem is the sale of HDTV's, but I suppose Sony couldn't just sit around and let Microsoft's XBox 360 dominate.

With only 1% of the DVD sales this year being High-Def (and some were part of deals) there is still a significant demand for non high-def. As an aside the Apple TV box is inexplicably only for high-def TV's but only uses standard def for now; as well, people are willing to watch movies on screens with 1/4 of the pixels of a standard TV (why?).

Again, at $130 it's a reasonable price for a quick and easy method of getting your gaming fix. I'm sure the availability of pirated games easily burned to disk doesn't hurt the sales of the PS2 (just the gaming industry).

The PS2's got a bit of life left yet. I'm sticking with my lowly 6600GT 128MB PC video card, but I have to say.. high resolution graphics are NOT everything... yet.

edit - someone should post something about the PS2 on this board. So.... integrated power supply - neat. I wonder if it has a master on/off switch like the PS3 (makes it easier to kill the power when you're not using it for a while).

Yes the PS3 is a great gaming machine, if you actually like playing games however, you are out of luck as there arent any.

You can also buy a PS3 for a cheap Blu Ray, but it's incomplete and isn't 1.1 spec. I almost forgot, everyone who bought a PS3, then got a real BD player says the PS3 sucks as as BD player compared to a well built stand alone.

If you want to read non-biased Sony reviews by people who are open minded, go to

www.sonydefenseforce.com

They even gave Lair a 10/10, you know, the game every reputable review website gave an average 1.4/10, actually they give any PS3 game a perfect score. This is where Joey gets his lingo from because he's too stupid to come up with anything original.

Enjoy laughing at the idiots who are even more hardcore losers than the ones at blu-ray.com

Update: Get this one, the guy who owns Wii60.com, a pro-MS and anything anti-Sony also owns sonydefenseforce.com.

He started the site to make it look like rabid Sony fanboys run the whole thing and links them to each other to drive up ad click revenue for himself.

Now that's pretty smart.

The site that Joey / Dave has posted text verbatim from is actually anti Sony.
