Sony Debuts PSP Download Service

By Ed Oswald | Published December 5, 2006, 12:18 PM

Sony debuted its title download service for the PlayStation Portable game system Tuesday, initially offering five classic PlayStation titles.

Each title will sell for $5.99 USD, and can be accessed through the PlayStation 3 console. From there, the user will need to connect his or her PSP to transfer the emulated game. Plans call for games to be added on a regular basis.

The first games include Cool Borders, Crash Bandicoot, Hot Shots Golf 2, Syphon Filter, and Tekken 2. A second batch of titles will be released closer to the Holidays, Sony said.

Right now, the classic games range in size from about 150MB to 535MB, and will be playable on up to five different PSPs before locking. Thus, families or gamers with multiple units would not need to purchase multiple copies.

"Downloadable PlayStation emulated games on the PSP is just the beginning, but it underscores our vision for leveraging the wide breadth of content that's available from the PlayStation brand, and delivers value to gamers well beyond the initial purchase of their PS3 and PSP," said Peter Dille, senior vice-president product marketing of SCEA.

In addition, the download service will also eventually carry titles that can be played on the PS3, the company said.

Spend $600 for a console that is (for all purposes) equal to a 360 ($400 console). Get a crappy online service. And then when they do add something that could be cool, you end up needing to also own a PS3.

Thats ok, Sony Fanboys will still love Sony. If this was Microsoft, they'd be all over them. Microsoft is so far from the Monster so many make it out to be - Sony with the PS3 seems much worse.

The PS3 and 360 are above and beyond the Wii. The Wii's benefit is that it offers a different style of gaming. And they are very similiar - I don't think we'll see one blowing away the other (aside from Xbox's online experience)

I like Microsoft as a company. I like Sony as I company. I loved my Xbox and I love my 360. I think Sony royally screwed up with the PS3. Does that make me an MS Fanboy?

Fact is, prior to my xbox, I owned the N64, Dreamcast and playstation. None of them wowed me. When Xbox came out, I decided it was time for an upgrade. I chose Xbox over PS2, simply because I wanted to see what Microsoft had to offer. I chose 360 over PS3, simply because Microsoft did WOW me with Xbox and 360 looked much more WOWING than PS3. Following things all along and see how things have turned out, I'm very happy with my purchase.

I have a Sony camcorder that I love. I have a Sony Receiver. I have 3 Sony Vaio desktops. I like Sony products. I just hate their lame attempt at a next gen console - ala.. PS3. Its for the most part a complete copy of the 360 plus a little Wii mixed in. Not to mention how much they hyped it up.

For anyone to think otherwise is just foolish. PS3 is a year late and a dollar short. It doesn't have anything that made it worth waiting for and worst, the stuff they could do to improve it ends up requiring a PSP. Stupid if you ask me.

I first noticed that UMD was available like 4-5 months ago. I don't keep up with it, but it definitly looked like a retarded idea back then. My understanding is that its failing. But I guess I do have a question for Marky, and Marky Jr. Why would anyone bother buying a smaller res movie for the same price of a regular DVD? Watching movies on a 3" screen cant be enjoyable.

Still, pretty much all handhelds are reserved for kids. I mean, I cant play a PSP while im driving. So being an adult that feature is worthless.
