Sony Depletes Inventory of 60GB PS3
By the Betanews Staff | Published August 30, 2007, 1:27 PM
Those hoping to get a discount on Sony's PlayStation 3 game console by snapping up the discontinued 60GB model better act fast: Sony says it has completely depleted inventory in its warehouses, which means what's on retail shelves will be the last units available.
In announcing the price drop and the new $599 80GB PS3, Sony said it expected to continue selling the $499 60GB models through the fall. It's not clear what Sony will do once no more 60GB PS3s are available, but analysts speculate the company will lower the 80GB price to $499 to keep sales up at current levels.
People fail to understand its GAMES that sell a system, it doesn't matter if Sony continues to drop the price unless it has games!

Trying to emulate a MIPS processor through software... oh yeah, that's a much better option. Just look at all the emulators out there right now that try to do that very same task for previous consoles that used a RISC CPU (including the PS2)... some are better than others, but ultimately they don't compare to the performance of the actual console, no matter how much horsepower you throw at them.
Not just that, but they stated in July (concerning the 60GB model) that they had "ample inventory to meet the immediate needs of consumers in this territory for several months to come"... and in August (one month later) state that their warehouses were empty. Considering that approximately 159,000 were sold during the month of July, their own sales goals certainly didn't seem too lofty.

Sure is going to piss off a lot of people who thought they were getting a "good deal" on the 60GB at that same price just last month (and now). Now it seems like they paid the same price for 20GB less storage space, and no bundled game.
How do you think this is going to affect sales on the 60GB once you start helping to spread this rumor all over the place? The 60GB models will once again start to collect dust on retail shelves because people will know that if they hold out, they can get the "better" one for the same price soon.

You really need to sit back and listen to yourself.
It is also who some of you blowhards over at bloray post pictures of your blo-ray collections . You buy hundreds of disks in a desperate attempt to prop up your format. I would be curious what sales would really be like if owners did what most normal people do and that is buy only what they like. Some of the movies on both formats are simply not worth buying on since they are marginal improvement at best.
You truly do not get it. I can't wait till the time comes when blo-ray really screws their supporters, well not that they haven't already. Many of us will be the first to laugh at you.

His long posts are everywhere else where people think for themselves and he has to try and convince us that this stupid format is going to take over the world.
The fact is he doesnt actually believe BD is better or is going to win and here's why. Everything he posts like "BD Support day" and "buy-a-thons" to boost the numbers at Amazon for BD are only to make it appear that BD is the more popular format.
When 5 percent of the HD movie viewing world is buying 1/3 of all the HD movies sold, that's a problem and he knows it.
His behaviour is OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) according to my wife, he truly has mental problems. It's just like the multiple nick thing here at BetaNews, he assumes fake identities to make it appear like there is a dozen blu-ray fanatics in here.
He has somehow convinced himself that he is a very important member of the BD group and the world can't go on without him. In reality, he probably works at a store like Best Buy where he can lie to people that don't know any better and convince them to buy BD.

Your "11 million" number holds no water. If the failure rate is 30-33%, then that works out to approximately 3½ million consoles worldwide. And you know what? That will more than likely be fixed with one hardware revision, not with 15 like the PS2.

Are you that dense? Yes, of course they should have offered an extended warranty, instead of pretending that the disc read error situation (among other problems) was the result of some worldwide mass hallucination. Instead, they opted to extort $120+ out of people for fixing a problem that was obviously a defect... defects that still exist to this day, 7 years and 15 hardware revisions later (that's 15... 11 for the old model, and 4 for the slimline model). They obviously were more concerned with getting their manufacturing costs down and making slight changes to try and thwart "modders" than they were with fixing known issues. Makes sense when you think about it... previously-modded consoles were going to fail anyway forcing people to purchase the newer versions when their old ones went belly-up (quite literally).
Microsoft acknowledged the problem (as they usually always have in the past), and they're going above and beyond as far as I'm concerned with trying to resolve the issues and keep their customers happy, without making them feel like they wasted their money. Sure, it's always a hassle to send something back for repair, but at least they've extended your opportunity to do so, and it didn't take a class-action lawsuit to make them do it.
Sadly, the only thing Sony seems to have responded to in the past is threat of large-scale legal action from the masses. I have never seen as many class-action lawsuits against a company for just one game console as there were with the PS2. As just one example:
http://www.consumeraffai...ctronics/sony_play.html
This went on for years, and anyone who hasn't been hiding their head in the sand (or up Sony's a**es) knows it to be true.
Yes, I bought a PS2, and I'm thoroughly expecting it to crap out, but ultimately I don't care. The way I see it, if they can't get it right now, when will they ever? The V15 hardware revision still has overheating and disc read problems... and since the inclusion of the unified EE and GS chip, it has compatibility issues with certain PlayStation and PS2 games? It has trouble with games that were designed for it??? The ePSXe emulator runs Lunar 2 Eternal Blue Complete better than the PS2 does. Unacceptable for a console that has been out for 7 years, but I finally got tired of holding my breath for a reliable revision of the PS2. I bought it for the games, not the hardware itself. Considering Sony's atrocious customer support and warranty issues, I didn't mind voiding it when I modded it.
Sorry, but 120+ million sold? Multiple replacements shouldn't count as sales.

It was a bad day for Andru Edwards from PlayFeed. After getting a replacement for his bricked Xbox 360 console, his new one got the Red Rings of Doom after 20 minutes of play. He claims that the new console was manufactured on August 15 of this year, which suggests that the new line of consoles may still be having problems dealing with the red ring problem.
Edwards' first Xbox 360 got the red rings and he received a brand new replacement about three weeks later. After playing the Fatal Inertia demo for 10 minutes, Edwards moved on to Stranglehold where the new 360 froze in the opening sequence. When he manually reset the console, the red rings appeared.
Edwards expressed his dissatisfaction with Microsoft's service. He even cited an interview with Peter Moore who addressed the issue during E3. The question Moore was presented with was: " [...] Are you guaranteeing or insuring that the systems that are rolling off the assembly lines now and the systems that will be returned to consumers will be fixed properly this time?" Moore answered, saying:
Yeah. I mean, nothing is perfect, guys. [...] I can't guarantee everyone in the world that we go fix one thing and then something else [won't] happen. No I'd be stupid to make that guarantee. But I feel very, very good about the quality of hardware now. You guys know this, every day in the factories where we are building these and where we are learning more about it. [...] You're constantly tweaking, moving parts around, you’re renegotiating with suppliers because your goal is to continuously raise the quality of the box, and bring the price down.
Edwards also posted some pictures to back up his claim that the new console he received was indeed manufactured on August. Click on the image to enlarge.

Seriously, you really need to find something else to fuss about concerning the reliability issue, because it's not that much of an issue anymore. Honestly, I'm surprised at some of the PS3 demo units in most major retail outlets I've seen (Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, GameStop, etc)... either completely shut down or locked up. I've never seen a 360 demo unit down, and those get a lot of playtime. If someone has a problem with it getting hot, they need to learn how to respect what the hardware needs and not keep it on the carpet or in a heat coffin in their entertainment center.
