Sony: No Price Cuts for PS3 Planned
By Ed Oswald | Published July 6, 2007, 1:12 PM
Forget about a price cut for the PlayStation 3 in the near future. Sony's president Ryoji Chubachi said the company currently has no plans to reduce the price of the console in an interview with Reuters.
Analysts had long been speculating that the company would cut the price of the PS3 by at least $100 to become more competitive here in the US. At a price tag of $599, it is $200 more expensive that the premium Xbox 360, and $120 more expensive than the Xbox 360 Elite.
The company is being outsold by the Wii, and in some cases the 360, by wide margins in just about every market, and investors are becoming increasingly more restless as the gaming division continues to cut into the company's successes in other divisions.
Price cuts were seen as the key to alleviate those concerns and propel the PS3 to the top of the heap like its predecessors enjoyed in previous generations.
"If you take a look at how PlayStation and PlayStation 2 have taken off, this is not such an unusual start," he argued. However, at the same time, the gaming industry has grown substantially since those consoles, so comparisons with them may not necessarily be accurate.
The financial markets are also increasingly losing confidence in the Japanese electronics maker. Last week, Nintendo replaced Sony as one of the company's 10 most valuable companies based on market capitalization.

An example would be this really really horrible U3 Flash Drive I bought. It was a great price, does everything I want, except work with Vista. Sure I purchased it before Vista and instead of supporting it the company just ended its life cycle.
I am not going to say that will happen to Sony but unless Sony starts to make a profit on the Playstation 3 and GIVE developers what they need to make great products.
Well lets just say Playstation 3 will be like the DODO Bird.

Micro$oft is still loosing money on every 360 sold and look at how long that has been out. And now, they are going to have to shell out ~$1 billion USD to deal with all the defective systems.
This is an incorrect statement Microsoft is making a profit on Xbox 360s and they have been for awhile now. Granted its like only about $20 but thats still a profit.
But in general they have lost money cause they increased the warrenty period for a huge cost ot them.

This is how it works. They sell the hardware at a loss, but make the money back in the long run, via PS3 game sales, and Blu-Ray movies sales.
The problem is, when you are someone like Toshiba, who is spending massive amounts of money keeping HD DVD afloat (hardware costs $550, sells for $300, and they are paying considerable amounts of money to Universal to stay exclusive), but they have no returns to get that cash back, They get nothing for movie sales on the HD DVD format, and there are no games or the like to generate returns...

Despite denials, Sony has made official the new $499 price point for the PlayStation 3 that we've started to see appear in retailers across the US. The 60GB model's new price point will indeed be $499, with a new 80GB model going on sale for $599 in the US and Canada in August. As a small bonus, the 80GB version will include a "free" copy of MotorStorm. So there ya' have it kids: in one quick swoop, Sony has made the PS3's price a whole lot more competitive.

"Sony Computer Entertainment America ("SCEA") warrants to the original purchaser that the PS3™ hardware shall be free from material defects in material and workmanship for a period of 90 days from the original date of purchase (the "Warranty Period")."
Also read this -
"Yesterday we were tipped off by an employee of a major publisher who claimed that the Sony PS3 failure rate—at least within his studio—has been much higher than Sony has stated failure rates to be (around 1-1.5%). The employee suggested that the failure rates were actually as high as 10-25% among the 300 or so consoles they received. He also noted that Sony Online Entertainment's Q-Bert seemed to be making the problem worse, with many of the consoles getting much hotter than usual."

Microsoft could 'pay' for an entire XBox 'enterprise' out of the profits from every quarter.
Net of taxes.
Like I said, Microsoft (as a whole) talk profits in tens of billions $ US p.a. (net), Sony (as a whole) have recently clawed back to only a couple of hundred million $ US.
Write XBox/XBox 360 off as a failure if you like but you're under-estimating the venture, it's one designed to last several generations....

Sony may be doing well in other areas outside their gaming division, butt the losses incurred by the PS3 are bleeding them dry. I know you don't want to admit it or even hear it, but it's the facts. No matter how well Sony's products are doing, a $2billion dollar loss is not easily swallowed. Yes, Microsoft can easily swallow a 2+ billion dollar loss, because they're a much bigger company. I guess you should stay out of the gaming console market unless you have the money to burn.
Some stores have resorted to only putting out one or two PS3 in the attempt to make it look like they are in short supply.
Fortunately for Nintendo, people are wising up to expensive consoles and buying a system that makes money and is fun to play. All of those dollars are lost sales for Sony as the 360 has been out for a long time and anybody who was going to buy one already did.
Sony, Not Microsoft is losing dollars to Nintendo. Oh well, some people never learn you can't launch a high end expensive gming system a year after the competition at the same time a better, well thought out fun to play system is also being rolled out.

Again, you can keep ranting about Sony until you turn blue in the face, the facts are facts and everybody knows it.
Now using your Sony math and "economics", explain to me how Nintendo is selling a console for more than it's worth (they're making a profit on it) and they can't make them fast enough, that's how fast they're selling. Then there is the PS3 which is worth far more than they're selling it for (they're losing huge amounts on it) and nobody wants it. Before you get the urge to tell me that the PS3 is selling just great, keep in mind that the Wii is outselling the PS3 five to one. Now this is the part where you tell me the Wii is not competing directly with the PS3 (laughable) and is aimed at a whole different market and target demographic.
So the 360 had a year head start and is way ahead of the PS3. Well that's not a fair comparison! Then there is the Wii that was launched at the same time as the PS3, but it's aimed at a different market! That's not fair either!
In conclusion, the PS3 is a clear winner as proven by my Sony fanboyish reasonings above. It has no direct competitor, therefore it wins by default! hahahahahahahaahaha

|This means one of two things:
a) Sony failed keeping the price cut a secret, which they tried to do because PS3 sales would screech to a halt until the cut when it gets known.
b) Sony is indeed not doing a price cut, and store owners are that desperate by now to s*** their vast amount of surplus PS3s which are just catching dust that they're willing to eat up a $100 loss per console just so that it sells in the first place.
So if for once Sony isn't talking out of their ass, then retailers must really be extremely desperate to get rid of their PS3s.
