An example would be this really really horrible U3 Flash Drive I bought. It was a great price, does everything I want, except work with Vista. Sure I purchased it before Vista and instead of supporting it the company just ended its life cycle.

I am not going to say that will happen to Sony but unless Sony starts to make a profit on the Playstation 3 and GIVE developers what they need to make great products.

Micro$oft is still loosing money on every 360 sold and look at how long that has been out. And now, they are going to have to shell out ~$1 billion USD to deal with all the defective systems.

This is an incorrect statement Microsoft is making a profit on Xbox 360s and they have been for awhile now. Granted its like only about $20 but thats still a profit.

But in general they have lost money cause they increased the warrenty period for a huge cost ot them.

Don't worry, many products sell at a loss. It's a common practise, called "Loss Leader".

This is how it works. They sell the hardware at a loss, but make the money back in the long run, via PS3 game sales, and Blu-Ray movies sales.

The problem is, when you are someone like Toshiba, who is spending massive amounts of money keeping HD DVD afloat (hardware costs $550, sells for $300, and they are paying considerable amounts of money to Universal to stay exclusive), but they have no returns to get that cash back, They get nothing for movie sales on the HD DVD format, and there are no games or the like to generate returns...

I agree with you on the first part about making money on games and addons, however you are grasping at straws on the HD part. I was for once going along with you until that point.

I still believe that the majority of people could care less about the blu-ray player. I believe that most don't want to pay a premium for a system that has something that they are not even remotely interested in. I think an addon would have been a better option for the consumer. People here are supporters of blu-ray so they want to the drive. Don't ignore that fact that most 90 some percent of the popluation don't give a crap about HD anything, accept maybe their TV.

So where does Toshiba's HD DVD division make up for the money pit that's eating all their money? Subsidising Universal and $250 a player is not cheap..

The current price of $599 is an excellent deal considering you're getting a Blu-Ray movie player with full support for all high definition audio formats including DTS HD Master that can also play video games. This is easily the best Blu-Ray movie player on the market. If Blu-Ray movies had both high quality sound (Dolby Digital Plus or better) and equal picture quality to HD-DVD I would buy a PS3 in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately, Blu-Ray movie audio and video are NOT equal to HD-DVD movies (not even close), so I will be sticking to vastly superior HD-DVD hardware and movies.

Let's see, Blu-Ray uses Dolby Digital audio. HD-DVD uses Dolby Digital Plus on every single disc and in some cases Dolby TrueHD lossless compression.

Also, every single HD-DVD disc released in the USA (except for the IMAX Chronos HD-DVD disc) uses superior VC-1 video compression. Blu-Ray uses the obsolete MPEG-2 on a significant amount of discs.

SGD, we park our cars in the same garage my freind. I was a PS3 owner since launch day and didnt get a 360 / HD-DVD combo until a week before Christmas 2006.

Sony however does not.

It hurts Sony ( as it is a smaller company with alot less funds ) to lose 2 billion than it does MS to lose 7 billion.

So while MS MAY indeed be bleeding money, it has other income sources to alleviate, while Sony does not.

Sony are a huge company, much more diverse than Microsoft, they have divisions in Music, Movies, Gaming, Home Elecctronics, Buisness Electronics, Broadcast equipment, the list is endless.

If Sony sells another 3.5 million PS3's after the price drop, it will only mean another 1.4 billion dollar loss to add on to thier existing 3. Not to mention the attach rate is one tenth of what it needs to be for Sony to start making money back.

Some stores have resorted to only putting out one or two PS3 in the attempt to make it look like they are in short supply.

Fortunately for Nintendo, people are wising up to expensive consoles and buying a system that makes money and is fun to play. All of those dollars are lost sales for Sony as the 360 has been out for a long time and anybody who was going to buy one already did.

Sony, Not Microsoft is losing dollars to Nintendo. Oh well, some people never learn you can't launch a high end expensive gming system a year after the competition at the same time a better, well thought out fun to play system is also being rolled out.

Your numbers are based on the old data of component prices, which is now out of date, and it also assumes Sony are not making money on PS3 and acessories. The attach rate of PS3 games is actually very good, at 4, the same as the Wii.

You must work for Sony with the info that you ahve about their costs.

Nice try, but it's public knowledge that the price of Blue lasers have dropped from $70 to $7 recently, and the cost savings of removing the EE chip and related circuitry are also well documented.

Looking at the stuff we DO know, Sony have done $80 of cost savings, there are no doubt more they havn't shouted about... I wouldn't be suprised if it's $140 cheaper to make (down from $800 to $660).

Despite whatever incredible savings they managed to create on the manufacturing of PS3 components, the fact remains that they're STILL hemorrhaging more money than they can afford. Now using your Sony math and "economics", explain to me how Nintendo is selling a console for more than it's worth (they're making a profit on it) and they can't make them fast enough, that's how fast they're selling. Then there is the PS3 which is worth far more than they're selling it for (they're losing huge amounts on it) and nobody wants it. Before you get the urge to tell me that the PS3 is selling just great, keep in mind that the Wii is outselling the PS3 five to one. Now this is the part where you tell me the Wii is not competing directly with the PS3 (laughable) and is aimed at a whole different market and target demographic.

So the 360 had a year head start and is way ahead of the PS3. Well that's not a fair comparison! Then there is the Wii that was launched at the same time as the PS3, but it's aimed at a different market! That's not fair either!

In conclusion, the PS3 is a clear winner as proven by my Sony fanboyish reasonings above. It has no direct competitor, therefore it wins by default! hahahahahahahaahaha

This means one of two things:

a) Sony failed keeping the price cut a secret, which they tried to do because PS3 sales would screech to a halt until the cut when it gets known.

b) Sony is indeed not doing a price cut, and store owners are that desperate by now to s*** their vast amount of surplus PS3s which are just catching dust that they're willing to eat up a $100 loss per console just so that it sells in the first place.

So if for once Sony isn't talking out of their ass, then retailers must really be extremely desperate to get rid of their PS3s.

I'd have to go with the first one.

They do this all the time with their other consumer level products. There almost certainly will be a price drop this holiday. They have to improve their market share or else even more of the developers are going to leave the brand.

So if anyone's planning on getting a PS3 just wait. They'll drop the price soon and all it's good for is playing a couple of movies anyways.

I did do my part though, I actually walked into Best Buy and bought Casino Royale on BD. Not because I wanted to but my wife is a major Bond fan and wanted to watch it that night.

You assumption is based on 8 month old component breakdown from iSupply. Since them, many things have happened. Blu-Ray diodes have dropped rom $70 each, to less than $8. PS3's have $50 cut from the price for PS2 EE chip(s). There are no doubt other cost downs we don't know about.

At the moment, it's likely Sony loses $200 per console. IF they drop $100 (which is likely), then it's no big deal. The PS2 only made money 24 months in...

The PS2 had at least twice the number of games as the PS3 at this point.
The PS2 had numbers of ramping up supply, and watching it's competitors lose share.
The PS2 had great press continuing on from the PS1, and had exclusive games such as Grand Theft Auto (which I myself bought the PS2 for, then sold it a few months later.)

Obviously this denial didn't take into account the leaked ads and retailer info that's out there that is saying that the $100 price drop is happening on the 12th of June (and that a couple of Target stores are already honoring the price drop).

They can deny this all they want to cover themselves and their decision, but they also have to know that bringing themselves in line with at least the 360 Elite system is going to look very good for them, even if it means more of a hit up front.

If Sony says it ain't happening then the stores will eat the loss.

Actually, PS1 (known as PSX back in the day) was in competition with Sega Saturn, and if I am correct PS2 Vs Sega Dreamcast. Nintendo 64 was dying at the time and doing poor sales or doing no sales at all, if I remember correctly =).

I believe I said right in my post that Sega dropped out early, so the PS2 was hardly in competition. As for the Saturn, it was the PS3 of it's day.

i think thats one of the first good statements i have seen in a long time, yes if all the good rpgs, of long ago, were re released, and updated with graphics, and maybe an extended story line, i would diffenitly drop cold hard cash for a new sony console, as long as these titles wernt released ever on my pre existing consoles, sonly ps2(becasue its lonely..), my burning hot 360(becasue i play the crap out of it), and my Wii, if my girlfriend would give it back :P she loves it.

and according to that link, straight from a FIFA developer's mouth, graphically the wii is not as powerful as xbox1 and the entire system is about as powerful as xbox1.. he is actually praising the wii in that article too, it isn't meant as an insult.

I believe what Enix wants to do is SELL their game. I seriously doubt the code is even finished, and it wouldn't be that much work because the Wii is not that much less powerful.
