Sony PSP Users Get HotSpot Access

By Ed Oswald | Published March 29, 2007, 1:22 PM

The latest firmware update for the Sony PlayStation Portable has added functionality that would allow users of the device to access wireless Internet at any T-Mobile HotSpot location.

Each PSP user would receive six months of free Wi-Fi at those locations following the first date of login. Following the promotional period, users would be offered a special rate for access via the device.

T-Mobile operates more than 7,000 locations, including at Starbucks, Border's, Hyatt Hotels, and 70 major airports. In order for a customer to take advantage of the promotion, they would have to make their first login by March 28, 2008.

"More and more PSP users are going online to challenge each other in multi-player games, and we can now make it more convenient to access online gaming as well as the Internet, showcasing the rich feature set that PSP has to offer," SCEA marketing head Peter Dille said.

Sony says online gaming would work at HotSpot locations along with the multimedia features of the device.

In addition to the new HotSpot functionality, two other upgrades will be provided as part of the firmware release, version 3.30. PSP users would now be able to view videos stored on Memory Stick Duos in full resolution (720x480), as well as display thumbnails for RSS and video content, the company said.

Hmm, to upgrade or not to upgrade that is the question...
I am on BIOS 1.0 The benefits of this rare gem mistakenly released by Sony is the ability to play home brew.... plus thousands of ROMs on just about every platform of the 90's... Hmmm a thousand plus games on my 2GB memory stick or wireless access... decisions decisions...

I can not deny that I am very tempted to update my PSP, simply because of the new video resolutions. Its at 3.03 right now and all I need is GTA Liberty City to downgrade. I'm pretty sure Dark Alex, will come out with his 3.30OE at some time. Credit has to be given to Sony tho, I do agree with DaveGB. I also would like to be able to download the PSOne games directly from my PSP and maybe that will be available in a near future and Sony at least is offering something beneficial with this new upgrade.

Of course the 7000 locations will probably be useless to most people that own a PSP. We don't get it anywhere in Canada. Thanks for the propaganda now how about doing something so that everyone can get access.

Is that it. We want to download PS One Games without a PS3. I do not have the money to buy everything Sony sells. I bought a PSP, now can I use the features it already has? Sony you suck!

PSP was never sold as being able to play PS1 games.... It's not like you have been mis-sold anything. I seem to recall everyone complaining that PSP could not do 720x480 widescreen video, Sony have delivered that, but people still find things to complain about... Some people really are beyond belief...
