Sony Releasing Limited Edition PS2

In an attempt to thwart Microsoft's plans for video game console dominance in this year's holiday shopping season, Sony said Monday it would be releasing a limited edition Silver PlayStation 2 console for $129.99 USD. A limited edition Dualshock controller would also be included.
Microsoft has said it plans to sell at least four million additional consoles before the end of the year, at least double that of Sony's highest estimates for the PlayStation 3.
With the numbers of PS3 likely in the one million to two million range by years end, Sony has turned to the PS2 to help prop up its gaming sales in the meantime. By all accounts, the PS2 itself is outselling the Xbox 360, although by a small margin.
"Six years after its initial launch, the PlayStation 2 continues to enjoy nonstop success, outselling all other consoles," Sony Computer Entermainment American executive vice president Jack Tretton said. "The introduction of this limited edition model is sure to be a hit this holiday season with die-hard PlayStation fans and new gamers alike."
Sony says it has already shipped 111 million consoles, and over 1.12 billion software titles have shipped worldwide for the PS2. It is also the number one console in North America, Europe/PAL territories and Japan/Asia.

|So when all the parents buy these for their kids this year, do you really thing they are going to spring for an expensive PS3 anytime soon. I'd hate to be the kid that gets a PS2 under the tree this year, talk about a buzz kill.

|rofl
I was thinking the exact same thing.

I wouldn't, not with the games lineup that thing has. You can focus on your new and not-quite-shiny, I'll focus on fun.

|Go get your kids an NES then, it has a huge lineup of fun games. I'm sure they would much rather have an old console as a gift, after all since when do kids want the latest and greatest thing? It's easy to speak for yourself but as far as the big picture goes I don't see a recycled PS2 as being the hot gift to have this year.

|You might scoff, but PS2 is matching XBox360 sales in all regions, and Sony is MAKING money on them at that price, Microsoft is losing $$$ on every Xbox360 sold...

|Not really certain. It sure looks like the slim PS2 that was redesigned the first time around, but silver instead of black... the one that supposedly had overheating issues, right?

You know, I'm thinking the new PS3 is sure to be a hit as well. If only they put those misguided efforts and resources into making sure the PS3 was ready to be released when they said it was going to be. Die-hard PlayStation fans most likely have what they want already, and I'm not so sure about the new gamer market they're trying to target.
On that same note, I'm curious to know who would spend good money on revamped six year old hardware with the imminent release of the PS3 just around the corner. Granted, the price is definitely attractive, but still...
EDIT: Scratch the "misguided" comments above. It may not have taken as much to "redesign" it as I originally understood, as it seems the silver model has apparently been available in Europe for quite some time. Put North American region encoded hardware inside, and presto! It starts to actually seem like a good idea now. :)

|I'm very happy with the existing PS/2, and I don't want Silver to be the new Black.
I want Black to be the new Black.

|not that i want one but i can see a lot of those silver PS2 consoles bought as xmas present for kids instead of PS3. from uninformed parent standpoint - "huh, i'll save ~500$ and the kid will not notice the difference anyways, same color the only difference is the number".
a lot of tears from various brats are upon us LOL!

|Ooh... putting different color paint on an old machine... that ought to thwart sales of XBox 360!
How stupid can this get?!

|Motorola has made a ton of money from selling the same RAZOR in different colors. In fact, they had carriers signing "exclusive" contracts to be the sole distributor of particular colors for the first x months.
How stupid can this get? As stupid as the average consumer. Remember them? Over the years, they drove hours and spent entire paychecks on Pet Rocks, Mood Rings, Chia Pets, and Cabbage Patch Dolls.
If Sony shipped a PS2 with marshmallows or a cherry on top, somebody somewhere would camp out in front of the store overnight to be first.

|No no pay attention. The black person comes with the system when you pre-order.
Just switch my "in" with "with".
For those that don't know, the 20 and 60 gig models with both be piano black - the 60gig will feature metallic silver highlights around the disc loading area. Oh and the name "Playstation 3" will be filled in with this same silver highlight on the top of the unit.

|I thought you meant to say "will only be available TO black people"... I started thinking "the color makes sense now!" :)

|What's this? A smart move by Sony? Something that will actually make them money and not lose it? No, it can't be :)
It is nice that Sony does have sense when it comes to console sales. If their PS3 were to fail in the long run, PS2 S.E. sales may keep them afloat at least. Heck, if they re-released a PS ONE, I think I'd buy one for $75...the original one actually had some appeal to me. The PS2 just had a bunch of games I didn't personally care too much for.

|Burnout 3, man. I bought the PS2 for that game alone.
Burnout Revenge sucked, though. FlatOut is my current fav, although I play that one on the PC.
