Sony Settles 'Touch Feedback' Suit
By the Betanews Staff | Published March 1, 2007, 7:10 PM
Sony has agreed to pay Immersion, the company that created "touch feedback" technology, $121 million to settle ongoing patent infringement litigation. The deal means Sony can include the technology again in future products after dropping it from the PS3. Touch feedback vibrates the controller in response to action on the screen.
Immersion won a judgment in March 2005 against Sony that would have halted PlayStation sales until royalties were paid - at that time $82 million plus $8 million in interest. Sony appealed the ruling and asked for a new trial, although that motion was denied in March of last year.

(and don't think that isn't what they're working on, it'll sell by the zillion in Japan alone)

|At last now my PS3 will have the feel of games just like my 360 and Wii. Now when is MS gonna incorperate motion control? Then again maybe they have since they are using the Live! camera as a remplacement as they do in Raving Rabids.

|LOL...are you serious, Bill Gates STOLE the design for windows from xerox...He's nothing more than a white collar criminal. You sound like an uneducated republican liberal...you might want to know who you're talking about before you put your foot in your mouth. I say sue him into poverty and let Mac O/S take over the world...after all its a superior and more stable O/S which puts much less stress on the system, The only reason Windows is so popular is because microsoft was smart enough to do what sony did to them which was sign exclusive contracts for all the goodies and gadgets that developers were planning on making for future pc systems (in sony vs. microsoft this analogy would refer to the game producers)....pst btw the topic was talking about sony getting sued by immersion not microsoft, easily distracted are we? For all you Sony console system fans out there this law suit is an indication that the price of the PS3 will not make the regular 100 dollar price drop after the first 6-12 months like its 2 predecessors. Any time a major corporation takes a hard hit like that its not them that pays for it, its all of us.
none the less Sony will either kiss and make up with immersion and get the legalities taken care of to use immersion technology or they will design their own similar tech...either way Sony is too big and too established to be killed by something like this.

|You are an idiot.
Steve Jobs took it from xerox - not Gates. Get your facts straight. Even then, all they had was a mouse pointer that moved on the screen, it was so basic as it was late 70s. Then when the first Mac came out Gates took ideas from that - but not at first. Mac came out about 1984 (I had one), the first real Windows was almost a decade later. Then MS started taking a lot. Then Apple took from Microsoft (yes - things to make Quicktime better - MS won that lawsuit). Now we are on Vista..Gates took more again :) But your logic kills me, hate Gate - like Apple. Apple is far from morally right. At least Gates has donated millions to medicine (possible to extend his own life, but I might benefit one day)

|They do, 10% I believe, it's probably the biggest reason Sony fought so hard. MS tried to squirm out of paying Immersion they sued, then setled and MS invested in a 10% stake in the company.

|lol I'm an idiot...i dropped one wrong name or should i say i forgot to mention that bill gates collaborated with 3 other goons who went un-named by history books...not to mention lets find out what happened to those guys...why arent they as famous as bill gates if they owned the base for windows...OH thats right bill gates is still a scum bag and ousted them...I guess from now on when i make a post I'm going to have to think twice before generally summing it up, i will pull gates family tree to find out who was responsible for starting the family line and we'll just start placing the blame there and work our way up...after all i have nothing better to do than spend the next 4 hours typing out a bill gates biography...concidering it sounds like you're about 60 years old and im 26 I dont exactly recall those news reels from 1974...so IM SORRY...rofl, wow you must be a republican...just stay hostile and vote bush again.
Oh yeah almost forgot a decade after 1984 was the 486 dx2 66 era and most systems were running windows 3.11 at that time, jeez that must mean that within the "decade" you quoted MS taking to come out with windows they had 3 fully functional (by MS standards anyways) windows versions and probably at least 2-3 sub versions of windows 3. lest we forget 84-94 is a decade and ALSO the debut of windows 95.
none the less i never said that mac/apple was morally correct...what i did say was that the apple/mac tiger o/s is superior to the buggy garbage that MS releases in pre beta form every few years.
Oh and btw charity donations are tax write offs and PR stunts to get goons like you to rally behind them...I guess i should be thankful the richest criminal in the world donated millions of dollars to another guy who plans to rip me off at the counter with the product he practically designed for free...its like the thieves den...but way to play into it...good job.
Ok lets see how much you know about common legalities...if you are in a car with a friend who gets out and robs a convenience store and you dont get out of the car and leave...what does that make you? isnt that called an accessory? yeah i think it is and isnt an accessory to a crime charged with the same crime as the perpetrator...even if he wasnt there when steve jobs took it he knew it was ill gotten and bought into it anyways...which is dealing in stolen merchandise or proprietary ideas...good fight bud, but nice call on the steve jobs thing.
BTW could you send me those beta max cassettes of those news reels? i wouldnt mind seeing em.
Just remember everyone next time you end up paying 1500 bucks for a dose of vancomiacin to thank your local white collar criminal for helping them make it.
Class Dismissed.

I started computers at 11 - I'm now only 39, married to a new wife at 29, and a daugher at 18. I only put that because I see all different levels of this stuff.
I was also a huge Mac fan from day one, even worked at the first Apple Store in Hawyward CA (Steve Jobs was friends with the owner). The Mac was ahead then, and then MS caught up with XP. Now pretty equal with Vista as MS took more Mac stuff - they both do internet, word, IM - but my PC can still play all the latest games.
I like both. But your point was bashing MS for stealing. But also agree Apple does the same thing. My point - It doesn't matter how much you steal. Both morally wrong - hence equal - hence your point has no meaning to me. It's like one rapest rapes 5 kids and one 50 kids. Both evil.
Anyway, I loved my Mac in the 80's and 90's. But when Doom came out..... PC all they way :) Now with DirectX 10...

|I'm very confused by all these "stealing" claims? What exactly was STOLEN? Sure, Jobs saw the xerox stuff but was there a non-disclosure agreement in place?
How is what he did any different than what many open source developers do on Linux, i.e, someone comes out with a neat program on Windows or Mac and soon there's a clone (usually not as good) for Linux.
I'm struggling to see the difference.

|Yeah cause it's *so* much better buying proprietary items from Apple/Mac (whatever the f*** they're calling themselves now) for triple the cost, than having literally the same exact thing for a fraction.
P.S.- Don't give me the reliability BS. You guys have JUST as many problems as PC's ... The only difference is that Windows/MS is a bit more idiot proof than Mac, and thus a bit less customizable.
As for the Sony item at hand, I am kind of in agreement with the others and hope the worst for Sony. They put both feet into the grave pushing their PS3 off for so long. Since everybody went out and bought a XBox360 right when it came out, they look at the $500+ price tag for the PS3 and laugh.
Granted it's suppose to have this super-duper-awesome interface/graphics, if you look at either the Wii or the 360, they both have functions that are so much better than the PS3 ever thought of.
It's a shame, too because the PS and PS2 were f***ing awesome for their time. They got greedy, decided to "outsmart" the competition, and ended up not being #1 on the console release because of it. This equates into sh*t sales. Sorry, Sony. But because of your business practices, the American public pretty much hates you :)
