Sony Updates PS3 Firmware to 2.0

By the Betanews Staff | Published November 8, 2007, 12:23 PM

Sony said Thursday that it had released version 2 of the firmware for the PS3, including the feature to remotely turn the console on and off through the remote play function. The Japanese electronics maker says that the feature now gives all users with a PSP access to content on their PS3 hard drive from anywhere, as well as the ability to create unlimited numbers of music and photo playlists. However, according to reports, the feature also requires that the cooling fan run constantly.

Other features include enhancements to the PS3 XMB interface, allowing for customization of the background and color. Additionally, an information board feature has been added that would keep users up to date on new PlayStation news, a new PlayStation Network category, and Trend Micro Web Security, which is provided free of charge until April of next year.

I agree with smaterthanyou give us DTS HD master audio. They would make many HT people happy.I reckon if they supply the dts hd masters firmware update they would have an awesome bd machine. That will increase there sales, why buy a bd machine 3x as much when the ps3 can do a better job.

What a waste of a firmware update. Still no DTS-HD or DTS-HD Master Audio support for Blu-Ray movies? The PS3 has the hardware to decode this format internally and output it as high resolution PCM over HDMI. All it needs is a software update.

Update worked flawlessly for me. I must say, I enjoy the ability to finally customize the default theme (and add new ones). One of the main features that isn't mentioned in the article is the addition of rumble support for the Dual Shock 3 (coming out 2008, already available in Japan).

Oh, and that Trend Micro crap isn't enabled by default. You have to go into a new browser security setting to turn it on etc. (for those worried about 3rd party crap taking over).

Well, here's a pro-Sony/PS3 article for all of you that like to chastise the BetaNews staff for being biased.

I notice none of you have anything good to say about this firmware yet. Is it too soon? What are your opinions about the changes that Sony made to the PS3?

Are you enjoying the enhanced media access and managing capabilities? How about those color changing options? Any PlayStation news that the rest of the world needs to be aware of?

Score: 0

My overall opinion is "Meh".

The media access doesn't mean much to me, as I run a TVersity server (more media types supported that way).

The XMB customization is OK, at best. I might be more impressed when they start releasing more themes to the public.

The Playstation Network Board could have been implemented a bit better, but it's a decent start.

While most of these tweaks don't mean much to me, I'll give them credit for trying to add some new features.

And the mythical 1.1 BD spec is non existent ...... I knew it. Let's hear Joey's explanation for this. Firmware updates come once every 3 months or so, which means no 1.1 spec until 2008.

I remember reading on the blu-ray.com forum that the next update firmware update would not only contain PS3 updates but .. get this .. BD 2.0 specs. What a dissapointment.

The same site that said Warner was "considering" BD exclusivity and all the girls went crazy thinking is was factual.

Score: 0

Isn't 2.0 just 1.1 with network capabilities. If so, then 90% of the work required for 1.1, and only a little more for 2.0 support.

It will arrive, I don't think anyone (including me) claimed it would certainly be in 2.0 update. perhaps 2.1, who knows.

Translation of Joey's post = Sony has no idea how to update the PS3 to BD 1.1 spec or if it will even work. I just want to read all the posts over at blu-ray.com complaining about the non-existent BD 1.1 spec for PS3.

Exactly... "who knows" indeed. Certainly not Sony apparently.

Also, BD-Live requires 1 GB of persistent memory as opposed to 256 MB for Profile 1.1 (previously "Final Standard Profile", now named "Bonus View") in addition to internet connectivity for interactive content.

http://www.videobusiness.../article/CA6495668.html

"the BDA is not going to object to some Blu-ray manufacturers, such as Samsung, which are not technically abiding by the Oct. 31 deadline for advanced features in players."

That doesn't surprise me. It seems like none of the members of the BDA are ever on the same page.

Score: 0

I love the fact that Blu-ray titles cost about the same as HD DVD titles, yet HD DVD releases have so much more content available. So people are paying the same price for just the movie on Blu-ray discs... and that goes for the foreseeable future as well, possibly into Spring of 2008.

Profile 1.1 "Final Standard" has been officially renamed to "Bonus View" profile. Who do they think they're fooling? An upgrade that almost brings the BD player functionality up to par with HD DVD functionality? They treat anything other than the main title just icing on the cake. How much more are those extra features on "Bonus View" discs going to cost the consumer if the price is already too high for what you get?

It also seems the BDA is now turning a blind eye towards the likes of Samsung for their clever stunt of releasing a player this year that has those capabilities... but doesn't. It's very simple... if it doesn't meet their own mandated requirements, it's not compliant.

Sony is setting the standard by which all other members of the BDA are following. Sony continues to release PlayStation 3 consoles that do not meet their own requirements for compliance... oh, but it does though. The firmware isn't released yet, but it's capable!

This 'Do as I say, not as I do' mentality is getting tiresome.

Moved to a later release since they get the crap working yet. This is the perfect site for PS3 threads since the PS3 is still beta, and this is news.

Score: 0

Movie studios have understandably not included those special features because of the lack of Profile 1.1 players.

You can 'chicken or the egg' this all you want, but none of the BDA partners can get their act together on the hardware requirements, and movie studios have already begun to get frustrated and act on it... the same way game developers have reacted towards the PlayStation 3.
