Sony: We Might Have Best Holiday Ever
By Ed Oswald | Published November 6, 2007, 11:35 AM
Sony believes that it may be about to have its best holiday season ever in the United States as it is seeing strong demand for TVs, cameras, and computers.
Fears of an uncertain market seem to be unfounded at least for now as American consumers continue to scoop up consumer electronics at a steady clip. In the wake of the sub-prime lending fallout, many manufacturers of consumer goods have feared that consumers would begin to stop spending.
Part of the reason why Sony is doing well is that it has become more competitive in price. For example, the company has begun to move some of its TV models to below the $1,500-price point, where most consumers can afford. However, it still plans to focus on the higher end of the market -- sets that are 50" and larger.
The same goes for computers. While it will stay out of the budget computer market, the $1,000 average price of its laptops is much closer to the $800 average overall for the market. The main focus going ahead will be notebook models with price points around $1,200 or $1,300.
Such moves are necessary. In an increasingly price-conscious society fueled by discount retailers like Target and Wal-Mart, Sony began to lose market share. Thus, the company had to change its ways or risk being left behind in this new market.
It is facing a similar situation now vis a vis Blu-ray. While the company enjoyed much success throughout the first three-quarters of this year, selling more software and catching up in the hardware department, lately HD DVD has stolen much of Sony's thunder.
Recently, players were sold for as little as $99 USD, some $300 cheaper than the least expensive Blu-ray model. Again, the company must then make the decision whether to stick to its guns on price or begin to compete with its rival.
Sony also did not mention the PlayStation 3 as part of its resurgence in the holiday season. This is probably due to the fact that the gaming system is still struggling to build a solid game library which will likely take until after the holiday season is over.
However, even there Sony has acquiesced to its competitors, releasing a budget system for $399 to quell complaints about its high price.
I wouldn't buy a Sony product anymore after my friends run in with the VERY poorly made Sony Ebook Reader broke on him twice and Sony refused to fix it. I'm a little dishearted with them. They use to be one of the best.

Link 1: Arnie is a RINO. Republican in name only. He's more Liberal than many Democrats as far as his decisions and press are concerned. MIMO, he's pandering to his base. Budget cuts are good. Regardless of what you may have heard elsewhere. Operating on a leaner budget should be the goal of all businesses/government.
Link 2: Fear-mongering of the "housing crisis". It's not anywhere near as bad as reported, and the Doom and Gloom covered in that article reminds me greatly of those "rioting in the stadium" headlines from the fires in cali...which was totally overblown. Again, coming out of Cali... I won't discount it entirely, but I will be highly suspect.
Link 3: Credit. True enough. People got careless and now it's biting them in the ass. The same thing that influenced this is what caused the housing "drama" we're seeing. People felt good about the economy, got lazy, over-stretched their budgets, and are now surprised to see that it comes with consequences. The bubble (their word) burst, they do that. it should be expected.
Even so, budget cuts in cali (probably in reaction to the fire and public outcry more than anything else), the housing drama, and the credit "crunch", the latter two being tied to eachother, do not the economy make.
I do not doubt hard(er) times may be ahead in Cali. You guys have been through hell. I have family members about 30 miles south of San Diego. I've heard the stories. I don't envy that state or anyone in it right now or for the next few years.
Still, Cali will recover. The credit crunch/housing issues will hopefully clear up (without government bail outs). These two things may affect the economy, but they do not steer it. It's worse than it was before they occurred, but it is far from the apocalyptic views expressed on MSNBC and the like.

|Considering no one (average Joe) even knew what BD or HD-DVD was last Christmas, they might be the hot items this Christmas, or at least they will try and make you think they are. BD will have to match HD-DVD player pricing however.
All it takes is for Fox News or CNN to do a story about people looking all over for a hot Christmas item, and people start to think "I have to have one of those", even if they don't want or need it.
If they were smart, Toshiba would make their players in short supplies at $99 from now until Dec 10th or so and then about a week before Christmas, unload hundreds of thousands of them on the chain stores to fill the percieved high demand.
Everybody wanted a PS3 for no reason last year, only because they were hot items and gave people something to brag about.

The PS3 will not have any kind of sales close to last years fiasco where everybody had to have them, mostly to scalp on eBay. HD-DVD movie sales should pick up dramatically as there are a lot more HD-DVD customers due to the sale.
I just don't see Sony having a killer Q4. The only one making money this Christmas will be Nintendo, who profits on every console, handheld and game they sell. You won't see a Wii price drop until shelves ae full of them, which I don't understand, they say 70% of them don't get played anymore and are sitting in closets.
