Sony pulls PS3 update after some gamers report bricked systems
By Tim Conneally | Published July 3, 2008, 12:18 PM
Just hours after making it publicly available, Sony has pulled the PlayStation 3's latest firmware download (v2.40) due to reports of inoperable consoles after the update process.
SCEA's director of Corporate Communication and Social Media, Patrick Seybold, played down the problem, saying that incoming calls regarding failures have been of a low volume, and the removal is only temporary.
If incidents are in any way reflected by the voluminous message board chatter on the subject, it has only affected a fraction of users. Of the hundreds of posts reporting v2.40 update status for Playstation.blog readers, only several dozen posted system failures, and conditions surrounding those were somewhat inconsistent.
The worst outcome that several users have reported is a PS3 that simply does not boot after upgrading. One user said, "I tried to update to v. 2.40 this morning. Probably around 10:30 or 11:00 PST. It rebooted and left me hanging on the screen with the squiggly wave lines. It did not make it to the XMB. Upon calling Sony, I unplugged the machine. I plugged it back in. I restarted it. I held down the power button until it turned red again. Then I repowered the machine. Now I don't even get to the wavy squiggly line screen. I just get a black screen." Several other users reported the same.
The firmware update added several notable features, most prominent of which is the ability to access the XMB operating system screen while playing PS3 software. It also added an Internet search command that does not first require an open browser, and a new "trophy collection," which lists all the user's objective-based trophies collected from games which support that feature.
Some users who reported successful installs, however, report issues with these new features, claiming that attempts to access the XMB in-game or check their trophy collection both result in frozen systems -- but nothing as serious and incurable as a bricked PS3.
Sony has said it is "working diligently to isolate the problem...and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up." In the meantime, some users have taken the matter into their own hands, removing and reformatting their PS3 drives at the expense of their previously saved games.
I downloaded the firmware update and I have not had any problems at all.Maybe I'm just lucky?I'm very happy with my PS3.

You're arguments are weak as gameplay is everything and fancy graphics mean nothing if the game sucks.
By the way, Burnout Paradise looks much smoother on the 360 than the PS3, as I can A/B them to compare the graphics. The PS3 version reminds me of those old Namco arcade games with the badly shaded polygons with severely jagged edges.
Other PS3 games look fantastic, as long as there are curved edges. The PS3 does not render straight lines worth a s*** at any angle. I laughed when I saw MGS4. The power lines in the intro literally were the worst case of jaggies I have ever seen on a so called top end gaming machine. This was after about ten minutes of loading time.
A lot of things looked god awful in that glorified hide and seek game.

Processor: xenon (360) 3 cores @ 3.2 GHz
the cell (PS3) 7 cores @ 3.2 GHz
PS3 Has a much stronger processor
GPU: xenos gpu (360) 500 MHz & 48 pixal pipelines
reality synthesizer (PS3) 550 MHz & 24 pixal pipelines
xenos is slightly more powerful than the synthesizer, BUT what the true gamers will tell you( as I am about to now) games rely on cpu much more than gpu.
Hard Drive: 20 GB NOT upgradable only 13 GB available (360)
60 GB SATA 2.5 " HDD FULLY UPGRADABLE (PS3)
This makes the PS3 HDD 47 GB bigger and reads ALOT faster because of serial ATA technologies.(bobthegoat should stay on the farm and leave the computer specs to us city folk)
RAM : XBox 360 features 512 mb RAM All of which can be accessed buy the cpu & the gpu. The RAM is clocked at 700 MHz.
The PS3 RAM is split into 2 RAMs. CPU RAM & GPU RAM, which both add up to 512mb. THE GPU RAM is clocked @ 1.3 GHz, that's nearly TWICE as fast as the 360 RAM. The CPU RAM is clocked @ 3.2 GHz The GPU can borrow RAM for the cpu.
The 360 ram doesn't stand a chance against the PS3 ram.
USB Ports
XBox 360 has 3 USB ports, 2 in the front 1 in the back.
The pS3 has 6 USB ports 4 in the front of the console.
PS3 is again the winner here.
Reliability:
10,000 XBox 360s get sent in each week to MICROSOFTS repair center. The XBox 360 has a failure rate of more than 33%. MICROSOFTS response" but but it's cheaper"
The PS3 has a failure rate of 0.2%. This means that the PS3 is 150 times more reliable than the XBox 360.
More features better than the 360:
1. Far more reliable than Xbox 360. No red-ring of death failures that must be sent off for a fortnight to repair.
2. Blu-ray is going to win the next generation format. The PS3 has the cheapest blu-ray player that your going to get.
3. WiFi built in. No more Ethernet cables across the room. Excellent browser - watch youtube videos, check and print email and play Macromedia Flash games.
4. Your PS3 has another cool party trick – use your PS3 as a phone to call your friends who are logged on via your Bluetooth headset.
5. PSOne and PS2 backward compatibility + PSP connectivity, file and multimedia sharing over WiFi.
6. Six-axis. Motion sensor wireless controller. Also comes with a free USB cable to charge.
7) High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) 1080p and Digital Audio. Superb graphics and audio on games, that holds up to 4x more data than other game discs.
8. PS3 exclusives: Metal Gear Solid 4, Genji: Days of the Blade, Final Fantasy XIII, God of War 3, Heavenly Sword, Kill Zone 2, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.
9. SATA hard disk drive. You can choose any SATA hard drive instead of having to buy one from Sony. MS charges 200+ just for 120GB hard disk.
10. Distributed research making use of the PS3’s CELL Processor. When you’re not playing games, why not put it to good use and help find a cure for diseases. (folding@home)

|Hey newyorksabre fanboy,
First of all, Live is only $49 a year and PSN sucks a bag of crap.
The 120GB 360 costs less than an 80GB PS3 and comes with a 2 year warranty.
The numbers don't mean s*** if you can't tell the difference between the two system while you are actually playing (both of which I own).
The PS3 controller feels so light and cheap compared to the 360, I can't stand even holding in my hands.
The PS3 has to do some monster download to update games all the time, which really sucks.
I'll take the 360 over the PS3 any day, even with all it's faults like RROD, which mine just came back from (brand new console with a manufactured date of June 2008 with a free black wirelees controller and free 12 month XBOX Live card, plus a letter of apology).
Sony would never do this to please thier customers.
My PS3 is a fantastic BD player and that's pretty much it.

|In regards to the 360's hdd.
First of all, the reason there are only 13gb available AT FIRST, is due to the fact that there are videos and at least one game (Hexic HD) pre-loaded. All of which can be deleted by the user if they want.
Secondly, the hdd can be upgraded, either with the official 120gb hdd, or thru certain hacks.
Third: do you really consider Sony's hdd to be that much of an advantage, when you take into account the installs that a good number of games require? Oblivion took up a nice little chunk of my available space, and didn't load any faster than it did on my 360...go figure...
On to your 'bullet points':
1. Redundant point. You used it before in your diatribe.
2. A little late to the party. Blu won the next-gen format war a few months ago. Unremarkably, it remains a niche market.
3. To use a quote of yours from earlier: "BUT what the true gamers will tell you..." Wi-fi can be quite laggy when playing games across it. Decent browser, but I have a computer for those things, so I consider it to be a push.
4. I have a cell phone...using my PS3 to make a call seems more than a little bit like overkill.
5. Backwards compatability depends on which model you have.
6. The six axis sensor did wonders for Lair, didn't it. The controller feels way too light, and the motion sensors seem like more of a gimmick than an actual feature.
7. Here's a secret for ya: HDMI is NOT required for a hd picture...only 1080p. Component cables will transfer a very nice 1080i picture (which is more than enough for a good chunk of the hd tv owners out there). Furthermore, HDMI allows for more DRM. BTW, the 360 has HDMI, now, as well.
8. 3 of the games you list haven't even been released, yet.
9. Redundant arguement.
10. For the first year it was out, the PS3 didn't have that many worthwhile games. Folding@home was one of the few reasons (for many) to even turn their PS3 on...
10 (part 2 apparently). Live costs $49 a year...to play online. Otherwise, it can be accessed for free; with the user paying for things that he/she downloads. While I prefer the PSN store to 360s marketplace, Live makes the PSN look like a fart in a hurricane.
Most reviewers will state that the 360 and PS3 versions of a game are very comparable. All those numbers don't mean S$%T when considering that the majority of people want to do one thing...play a game. Both consoles cater to that, and it kind of makes either's superiority a wash.

The 360 has HDMI and Digital Audio too. So far it looks like the developers have done fine with a quarter of the space of BR too. Look at The Orange Box. It includes Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Team Fortess 2 and Portal all in one (1) DVD.
Just to be clear, more space doesn't mean better graphics if the graphics chip can't handle more. As you can see with my other link that the graphics for the PS3 don't look much better (if at all).
"Don’t have to spend 75 + a year just to play against someone online."

The SPEs on the Cell are not autonomous, and rely completely on the PPE for instructions. Granted, they are capable of impressive floating-point calculations, but they are useless without the PPE... you know, that one core.

Don't get me wrong... I've always been a huge nVidia fan (except for a couple of months after they scooped up 3dfx, which was painful for me to deal with since I was a bigger 3dfx fan). However, there are limits to what a GPU that is 3 years old can accomplish (especially at HD resolutions) compared to ATI's more advanced offering in the Xbox 360.
The PS3 zealots will apparently believe what they want to believe... they always have. The simple truth of the matter is that the Xenos GPU is basically an ATI R600, which is the GPU that their HD 2900 cards were built around. Those cards were released to compete with (and in some cases wipe the floor with) nVidia's 8800-series cards, which were much more advanced than their own 7800- and 7900-series.
As advanced and impressive as the PS3 is supposed to be, Sony's GPU choice has been a head-scratcher for quite some time. And yet, the fanboys prattle on and on about how the PS3 will still be relevant 5-10 years from now from a gaming perspective. That's hysterical...

Typical Sony response. They never EVER take responsibility for anything, no matter how badly they screw up. They always try to s*** the blame to someone else or pretend there was no problem in the first place. Say what you will about Microsoft, but at least when there was a problem with the Xbox360, they stepped up and extended everyone's warranty and offered to fix the problem. It would take a class action lawsuit against Sony to get them to do something like that. In fact, this is what happened with the PS2's faulty laser assembly. Sony had to lose a class action lawsuit before they would fix the problem.

|Ummm...you do remember how long MS was spouting their 'vocal minority' nonsense, in regards to hardware problems, before offering up the LIMITED warranty extension, right? (Hint: over a year). How about the fact that when they extended the warranty, they left quite a few users holding their pud, since it didn't cover any of the dvd drive problems (drives that couldn't read 360 games, scratched discs, etc.)
I'm not going to say that there isn't an issue with this particular firmware update, but it seems that every time a firmware update comes out (for either console) there are people who b**** that it messed up their machine.
Anyone who remembers my rants from the BR/HD DVD 'war' knows that I'm not a Sony fanboy, in any aspect; but give them a little credit where it's due. When they found out there was an issue with the firmware update (regardless of how many were affected), they pulled it.

Considering nearly every set top Blu-Ray player supports deinterlacing 1080i video on commercial Blu-Ray discs before passing it on to the TV, I'm surprised that the Playstation 3 STILL can't do this basic task. It doesn't take an expensive Silicon Optix Reon or Realta video processor to do this properly. The deinterlacing of 1080i video can easily be done in software on the PS3's Cell processor.

Since it was during MS's 'head in the sand' timeframe (in regards to the RROD), there really isn't any way to know if these consoles were getting ready to have a problem, or if it was the update itself causing it.

"USB Ports"
So what? I have 4 wireless controllers that don't need USB.
"Blu-ray is going to win the next generation format."
I don't buy movies, so I don't care about BR. I do rent DVD's though, and if I want to see it in HD, I can download it from Xbox Live Marketplace without any extra hardware.
"WiFi built in."
Yeah, but it's not required. Eithernet is faster and more reliable anyway. I can use my 360 as a Media Center Extender and watch my HD TV shows that I recorded with my HTPC. Wifi isn't fast enough if it's too far away from the router.
"use your PS3 as a phone"
OH MY GAWD!!!1!one!!! That's amazing!!!!! Or I could just use my cell phone.
"PSOne and PS2"
That's what my PSone, PS2 and Xbox [one] are for, which I haven't played for months.
"PSP connectivity, file and multimedia sharing over WiFi"
I could do that without a PS3.
"Six-axis"

"(HDMI) 1080p and Digital Audio. Superb graphics and audio on games, that holds up to 4x more data than other game discs."

|"The RSX is pretty much a 7800GTX class GPU in some cases its worse in some cases better, nothing that is really new. Now the same can’t be said about the 360’s GPU at all.
Now the 360’s GPU is one impressive piece of work and I’ll say from the get go it’s much more advanced than the PS3’s GPU so I’m not sure where to begin, but I’ll start with what Microsoft said about it. Microsoft said Xenos was clocked at 500MHZ and that it had 48-way parallel floating-point dynamically-scheduled shader pipelines (48 unified shader units or pipelines) along with a polygon performance of 500 Million triangles a second.
Before going any further I’ll clarify this 500 Million Triangles a second claim. Can the 360’s GPU actually achieve this? Yes it can, BUT there would be no pixels or color at all. It’s the triangle setup rate for the GPU and it isn’t surprising it has such a higher triangle setup rate due to it having 48 shaders units capable of performing vertex operations whereas all other released GPUs can only dedicate 8 shader units to vertex operations. The PS3 GPU’s triangle setup rate at 550MHZ is 275 million a second and if its 500MHZ will have 250 million a second. This is just the setup rate do NOT expect to see games with such an excessive number of polygons because it wont happen.
Microsoft also says it can also achieve a pixel-fillrate of 16Gigasamples per second. This GPU here inside the Xbox 360 is literally an early ATI R600, which when released by ATI for the pc will be a Directx 10 GPU. Xenos in a lot of areas manages to meet many of the requirements that would qualify it as a Directx 10 GPU, but falls short of the requirements in others. What I found interesting was Microsoft said the 360’s GPU could perform 48 billion shader operations per second back in 2005. However Bob Feldstein, VP of engineering for ATI, made it very clear that the 360’s GPU can perform 2 of those shaders per cycle so the 360’s GPU is actually capable of 96 billion shader operations per second."
yeah so you would be wrong...

|updated here with no problems...it seems to be a really small fraction of PS3 owners having problems...i think its quite possible for Sony to have missed this during testing...
regardless it sucks, and you would hope Sony would have gotten it right, but im glad they have taken it offline to try and fix whatever the problem was...

|Hmm I heard that there were bricked systems and that taking the harddrive out of the POS3 and attaching it to your home computer. Reformatting the drive and then re applying the patch work for some people but they lost all their saved games.
Wow looks like Sony is nipped in the butt again.. Maybe next time they will ensure they test before the release.

|Yea because a "Low volume" of systems that need their HDD formatted makes it a "POS3". That is entirely worse than a 33% failure rating making the consoles completely worthless. Unless of course your one of those nintendo fan boys that like commenting on every story about every other console and every product released by the companies that make those consoles. Get a life and start stop wining about every other console just because your mother only bought you one.
