Sony ships S350 Blu-ray player for $400, firmware awaited

By Jacqueline Emigh | Published July 17, 2008, 1:43 PM

Sony's latest entry-level Blu-ray player might be sleeker than its predecessor, but pricing hasn't come down any. The new BDP-S350 is shipping, but a firmware upgrade will be needed to make it the first non-PlayStation to work with BD-Live.

NEW YORK (BetaNews) - On Wednesday evening, Sony unveiled the BDP-S350, a smaller and lighter external Blu-ray disc player which adds new navigation and set-up features, along with planned upgradability to BD-Live, an online interactive site still currently available only for PlayStation 3.

While the BDP-S350 Blu-ray player is only about half the size of its predecessor, the BDP-S300, pricing will be the same at $400, said Christopher Fawcett, Sony's VP of home video product management.

In a demo for BetaNews at a Blu-Ray-oriented press event here on Wednesday, Fawcett showed a new "Home" button that's been added to the S350's remote control unit for managing set-up and changing settings.

When you click on the remote's "Home" button, you're brought to a new menu on the same PC-connected LCD display you use for watching Blu-ray movies. The menu presents icons for system settings, network settings, and set-up. If you want to change your music preferences, for example, you click on a musical note.

The setup screen for Sony's latest BDP-S350 Blu-ray player, which looks a little PS3-inspired.

Although PS3 machines contain built-in support for both BD-Live and PlayStation Network, the BDP-350 is only going to support BD-Live, he said. Whenever the firmware upgrade becomes available, the new external player from Sony will be the first non-PS3 device to work with BD-Live, an online site that enables interactive features and extra content such as film out-takes on Blu-ray movie discs.

The BDP-350 started shipping yesterday. When asked later at yesterday's event about the firmware upgrade, Rich Marty, VP for product development for Sony Pictures/Home Entertainment said that he couldn't give an exact date for that yet. "But it will be soon," BetaNews was told.

Meanwhile, of course, lots of end users have been complaining online about experiencing various compatibility problems around Sony's updates to Blu-ray firmware.

"Most current players do not support all the functions that studios place on the discs. Lacking support for -- or upgradability to -- [BD Live], consumers cannot utilize all the available options," noted Steve Wilson, an analyst at ABI Research, back in April.

Blu-ray pricing is also an issue for many. As previously reported in BetaNews, at another press conference in New York earlier this week, Sony rolled out four new Vaio PC notebooks, including one model -- the Z Series -- billed as the first laptop from Sony to include a Blu-ray drive. The Blu-ray option, though, adds an extra $800 to the $1,800 base price of the Z Series.

Sony's new BDP-S350 Blu-ray player, announced July 16, 2008Fawcett told BetaNews he can't speak about pricing of Sony's internal Blu-ray drives, since those are outside of the products he manages. He added that he doesn't anticipate a price drop below the $400 level on Sony's external Blu-ray players "for the foreseeable future." Sony is positioning itself for "innovation" and higher-end features, according to the VP.

"But some Blu-ray players [from other vendors] are already being sold for under $400," BetaNews was told.

Although Fawcett didn't pinpoint the lower-priced products, pricing for Samsung's BD-P1400 player reportedly slipped below $300 at the end of last year, and Magnavox released a new sub-$300 Blu-ray player in the US in June.

Yes Sony took a bigger loss that Toshiba for the PS3. Most of that happen in 2006 and 2007. Let's see...I punch you in the head 3 times and then ask you if you want a 4th walloping. Guess what the answer would be. If you guess NO you would be correct. Sony doesn't want to keep burning a whole in their pockets. Who would have thought?

8 months ago everyone though HD-DVD was going to win. Things change. Sony will have egg on their face if they raise the price so I can gaurentee you that BD players (yes even Sony's) will drop in price. I bet around Christmas time you will see all kinds of price drops because it will increase sales.

Why yes Sony did by a few studios. Columbia/Tri-star was bought in 1989 by Sony. In 2005 they purchase 20% of the holdings for MGM. You know they also own this company called Sony Pictures and Sony Classics. It really should be too surprising that they are in the movie industry and have connections. I believe when this stupid war started they have 7 of 8 major studios signed on to produce BD discs.

Sony created this format in the late 70s called Compact Disc. They also own a few music labels. They have no competition (oddly enough no one mentions this format when they think of failed Sony formats, yet I can't think of a format that has succeeded even close to this format)! We are screwed now! *chuckle*

A. HD-DVD players were cheaper but Toshiba also posted a $1 BILLION DOLLAR LOSS because of it. Maybe Sony didn't want to do the same. Those greedy bas****s at Sony!

B. Sony's gaming and television industries are posting losses. It shouldn't be surprising that the price of the PS3 is the same as this player then when it appears to be a better value. Again those greedy bas****s at Sony are trying to take your money!

C. As this article has already said there are players cheaper than $300.00. If you are looking for cheap maybe you could by from another company. Oh-my that is such an original idea. Again those greedy bas****s are Sony are trying to take your money!

D. Is BD-Live such a critical feature that the world will fall into apocalyptic hell if it's not there. Oh my! what are we going to do? Let's freak out for months on end until Sony gets us the new firmware. How about watch the frikin movie. You know the reason you bought/rented the disc. Seriously there aren't that many discs out there using this feature anyway and streaming videos of actors/movie studios of how they made the movie/ad for their next bugger picking flick really doesn't entice me at all. Same thing with PIP or bonus view. Watching the actor/director pick their buggers while describing the feature film isn't any better than just listening to them pick their buggers while describing the feature film. Again those greedy bas****s at Sony are trying to take your money and fun time away by not having useless features.

Why would someone buy a regular blu-ray player when you can buy a ps3 for $400 dollars

There is a lot more on the ps3 why is a standalone the same price?

Even if you don't play games the ps3 doubles as a media center and a blu-ray player or you know you could just spend $400 on a player that just plays movies which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, but you know whatever keeps you believing Sony is doing something smart...

The problem also lies where the players that cannot be upgraded (and sell for less) there is no proof that 2.0 is the last revision to the profile its already shown that some blu-ray movies on older players are having issues...

D. The classic fanboy comment..."hey, who cares if this feature doesn't work, who needs it anyway"...LOL I always love reading those. :)

Hey...who cares about a few extra pixels that you can't see unless you sit 2 feet away from your 60" screen?! Will the world fall into apocalyptic hell if you can't see those few extra pixels?! How about watching the freaking movie on an upconverted DVD and saving yourself $500?? You probably won't even see the difference! Unless ofcourse, you sit so close to the TV you'll be blind by the time the movie is over.

A) See this site. http://www.reuters.com/a...ews/idUST28076020080313

B) It makes perfect sense. It costs more to manufacture the PS3 than the $400.00 it sells for hence they are loosing money on each one sold. See this site. http://videogames.yahoo....lion-on-the-ps3/1223467

C. Go by if DVD player if you can't tell the difference. Whatever floats your boat. There are some people who can't tell the difference between a badly compress MP3 player and a CD but I can. Yes I can tell the difference between and upscaled DVD and a BD movie. You may not be able pinpoint every frikin pixle on the screen but a BD has 6x times the resolution of a DVD movie. That's noticeable. I don't even have to say I'm playing a Blu-ray and other non-technical people (people that pay best buy to setup their PC) notice how sharp the image looks.

D. I'm not a fanboy, just a little irritated with some of the people here and the dumb things they say. I swear as soon as an article posts about say the PSP you see 6 posts about how they hat the analog nub thingie even though it has nothing to do with gaming.

Yes I think that both of these features are really pointless and apparently so does a lot of people because they visit these things called theaters and they play movies without on-screen menus, or second audio languages, or commentaries, or live streaming of web videos. They even make you turn off your cell phone! Oh you like pay $8.00 for one viewing of this only and the popcorn costs like $20.00. These alien people watch movies to guess what? Watch the movie. They don't really care believe it or not.

Do I see Suzie at Wal-Mart looking at a disc and saying "Darn it doesn't have BD-Live!", and then throwing it back in the bin. Heck No!

All of the features of DVD work in BD spec 1.0 plus my personal favorite feature the on-screen menu. Bonus view someone might care about but every player now sold is BD 1.1 so that's not much of an issue anyway. BD-Live? Now you asking the user to hook up the internet to their player. Forget it, that's just to complicated.

What does the fact this Blueray player not going down in price tell me?

Well first the original $600-$500 price for Playstation 3 was actually really good. It tells me you were pretty much getting a Playstation for $100-$200 and a Blueray player for $400

It also tells me Selling a Playstation 3 at anything below the cost of the Blueray player means a lost not only on the development of Playstation console but also the cost of the Blueray player.

Tells me Sony has some huge issues to resolved and they need to drop the price and lock everyone in before somebody finds something better and CHEAPER then Blueray.

Score: 0

DUH!!! Sony wants to sell PS3...not a stand alone box. There is no reason, why thy could not reduce the price, just on the stand alone player. Once they have a decent market share with the Playstation, then the price will come down. Just my 2cents (I have the PS3, so hush it).

Score: 0

|

Actually, Sony wants to sell stand-alone players as well. There are plenty of people who own DVD players and no game consoles, it's equally reasonable to predict there will be a need for Blu-Ray players that are not PS3 systems.

As for the price reduction, from what I've gathered, the Blu-Ray system itself is driving up the price of the PS3, so why would a standalone Blu-Ray player, using the same technology, not be priced around the same?

Once they have a decent marketshare, prices will come down? They should be aggresively pricing the units to begin with in an attempt to sell as many as possible to gain the marketshare.

And what does your owning a PS3 have to do with any of what you had said?

"Sony's latest entry-level Blu-ray player might be sleeker than its predecessor, but pricing hasn't come down any."

Is anyone surprised? We all know Sony and we all know even after several years, they will not drop one red cent from the price. Anyone remember their MinDisc players? For several years they were trying to sell them for ~$600 in North America. This was during the Discman era by the way and well before the advent of MP3 players. I think Future Shop was one of the only places stupid enough to carry their overpriced MiniDisc players back then. I remember going in the store one day and looking at one and in typical Future Shop fashion, one of their reps immediately pounced on me. So I asked him if he knows how many of them they sold that month. He said he wasn't sure, but he doubted they sold any that month or the previous month. My point here is.. Sony will refuse to drop BD prices for a very long time. They have a strangle hold on the "next gen" market now, so they can keep prices high for the next decade if they so choose. I hope the Sony/BD zealots are happy. They can go spend a month's pay to buy a decent BD player and a few movies now that competition is non-existent.

No actually, there were a couple of other companies making MiniDisc players at the time, but I can't remember who they were.. I think JVC may have been one of them, but don't quote me on that. Either way, the non-Sony players were only slightly cheaper, presumably because of massive royalties to Sony or simple price fixing orders from Sony.

Even $ony is getting into the digital download of movies and tv shows on the POS3 so even they know that Bloray is a bust.

I just hope MS doesn't come out with an Xbox with a Bloray, I actually would rather them come out with one with HD-DVD technology built in and just say something to the effect that their doing this as a low cost way to give devs a chance to make bigger games for the 360. They should have added HD-DVD to 360s (instead of that stupid addon) as soon as they heard $ony was adding blorays to the POS3 but they screwed up on that. To me it looks like MS knows how to get the devs and the good games on the 360 but they don't know how to play the game with the hardware which is their downfall.
