SoundBlaster Live Drivers for WinMe

By Aaron Dobbins | Published September 28, 2000, 8:21 PM

For all of you computer users out there waiting for SoundBlaster Live drivers for your Windows Millennium setup, wait no more. Creative Labs was a bit slow getting these out, but you can download them from the Gateway support center. You can also get them from FileForum by clicking right here. Check them out over at Gateway by clicking the left mouse button right here.

Skip these drivers. They are ME specific in that they ommit SB Dos emulation and other legacy drivers, but on my installation they added tons of interference into the sounds and required higher cpu utilization. Use these if you have a Gateway PC with an OEM sblive, otherwise wait for the real deal.

this may be a little ot, but i installed winme last nite, and was using the old win98 sblive drivers. when i installed them, my computer kept rebooting, and running scandisk when it got back up... it froze and rebooted when detecting sb16 emulation... whatever. right after that, i was installing a nic... and i moved the sblive card and when i put it in another slot, the comptuer would boot up without video. when i removed the card, the video worked. i tried the card in another computer, same thing.

anyone know what happened? did i ground out the card or something when i moved it... should i save my money for a new card?

The problem is not one with Microsoft's Windows ME but rather that Creative Labs have never bothered to adhere to the WDM (Windows Device Model).

Correct operation of any hardware device requires that all of it's drivers and support files meet and adhere to the WDM.

Microsoft are currentlt receiving numerous calls related to this product causing issues and in most cases the problem is being caused by VERY fast machines that are in fact shutting down too quickly due to badly designed APM (Advanced Power Management).

There appears to be two main issues;

1. Shutdown & Restart problems

The cause of which is that the pc disables all the relevant hardware addresses before Windows is able to un-initialize all your devices and report this process in your bootlogs

The resolution to this is to disable APM in your system BIOS or consult your Motherboard manufacturer for an update BIOS version.

2. The new 'Hibernate' facility does not appear as an option in your the power options of Control Panel

Yep! you heard right - Windows ME has a Hibernate facility whereby all memory data is paged to the hard-drive into a file much time a Windows virtual-memory swap file which allows very mast reboot times amd starts you working exactly where you left off.

Most people don't see this option because they have a device that does not support the Power Management interface levels (known as S1-S4) as per the WDM (yep that again!).

You can eliminate what hardware driver it is at fault (possibley several if your machine runs lots of Creative Labs hardware) by way of a file that is created in your Windows directory name nohiber.txt

The file will list the device driver file that is causing the problem.

in the case of the SB Live! card the line would read;

"Hibernation disabled because hibernate is not supported by the audio driver- emu10k1.vxd"

To solve the problem - disable the problem device and reboot check the nohiber.txt file again and repeat the step of disabling the device if it lists another device etc.

Once all dodgy non - WDM drivers have been disabled Hibernate functionality should then be available. You guessed it! to fix the problem once and for all you once again have to contact the hardware vendor for WDM compliant drivers for the problem device(s).

Note: this problem has also been reported to occur with Creative Labs DXR2 MPEG2 decoder cards (part of the Creative Encore 5X DVD kit).

I hope this clarifies matters for those of you on the outside looking in!

Try to download the lasted W2K drivers. Those contain the WDM drivers which worked fine on my Windows ME installation. No hangups or anyting. The only thing that went wrong was the Game Port installation, but that got fixed using the drivers posted here:-)

Good luck!

I've read the readme.txt file and it doesn't match up for installation. I don't have a listing for Other devices under Device Manager tab in System Properties. The closes I have is Creative Misscelaneous Devices with the sub-options of Creative Gameport Joystick, Multimedia Interface, and Creative SB16 Emulation. What do I do?

To answer a previous question, It seems to me that I remember people complaining in newsgroups that the Win98 drivers don't support the some of the advanced power saving features of WinMe. I think that that is what has been added.

Yeah, I'd agree that downloading drivers from an OEM might not be a good idea. Wait for Creative.

Umm well i'll try that again... i have been using Windows ME now for a while and the SB Live! drivers have worked for me with no probs. (2.5, 3.0 liveware) So someone plz tell me the differences with these new drivers other then there 3rd party.

Live!Ware 3.0 works fine for me under Windows Me. It has always worked for me.

I'm usually a upgrade crazy person (if it works, upgrade anyway), but this time I'm going to wait for Creative, as I remember durring the Windows 2000 beta-test, I installed some OEM drivers (for my SBLive! Value) and it ****ed upo my entire installation. So since then I've been a bit scared off by OEM drivers.

I'll wait until Creative puts them out on their Web site. I'm always concerned that drivers from third parties are not good for me -- a non-Gateway user.

These drivers are for an OEM SB Live Value only, they will not provide full functionality for a full live or live Platinum card.

Wrong!

If installed correctly the installation will offer the option of specifying "SB Live! Series" as well as "SB Live! Value" and "SB Live! Game Port"
