Star Wars MMORPG announced, future console version eyed

BioWare and LucasArts today officially announced the long-rumored story-based MMORPG for PC called Star Wars: The Old Republic. It was not long before an EA exec began talk of creating a console version.

MMORPG blog today called it "the worst-kept secret in the video game industry," because the project has been known since last year, but has not been officially announced until now.

The game's predecessors, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and its sequel The Sith Lords were first released on the Xbox home video game console and then followed by versions for Windows. The Old Republic differs in that it was announced today as "a story-driven massively multiplayer online PC game."

Star Wars: The Old Republic screenshotSpeaking to Eurogamer today, however, EA executive Frank Gibeau said his company is already looking at bringing BioWare and LucasArts' MMO to home video game consoles. Currently, he says EA is looking at the logistical aspects of building a console MMO, and that once research is complete, they will decide between their Star Wars and Warhammer properties.

"For a long time, we've long wanted to return to the franchise in a grand way, and we felt that the best setting for it was an online world that would allow millions of people to participate in the experience together," said LucasArts President Darrell Rodriguez. "We knew that the developer capable of working with us to deliver an engrossing story with a fully-realized online world was BioWare."

BioWare emphasizes the story aspect of the game, saying it's not just another combat, exploration, and grinding MMO. Like its forerunners, the game follows the player down a path toward the light or dark sides of the Force based upon interactions with other characters and choices made. Star Wars: The Old Republic still has no release date.

I've been waiting for a replacement for SWG. I can't wait. I hope it's worth the wait or i'll have to continue to play Wow which I want to quit.

EA... :o

FTL!!!!! Already people are cringing at how this will fail due to their involvement.. Key to success don't have Blizz develop the classes and do NOT at any point have EA do anyting.

Bioware rocks! funny how EA automatically says they plan a console version. I heard hub bub that they were going to try for a takeover of Epic now.. FTL yet again

I cant wait for this to come out, but knowing EA's qualitys for games gives a little doubt to me, but the past two games they mde bad company and dead space were awsome so i hope they try even harder on this, this has been worked on for a long time.

Its a pretty safe bet that TOR will get the console treatment. I hope not, though..I'd hate to see the PC version stuck with those limitations.

Be interesting to see how it compares to SWG. However, EA's reputation makes me leery.

That's funny, I was thinking just the opposite. After being a beta tester for Galaxies, I was holding hope that this might be better than Sony's attempt at the franchise.

Well im sure it couldnt be worse than sonys attempt.

I too hope that this is better than Sony's attempt. I just have a lower opinion of EA than I do of Sony.

What about BioWare? They've made some decent games in the past. Could be interesting to see what they do with an MMO.

Agreed. But I'm cheap and I'm very satisfied paying $15 a month for WoW, so I KINDA hope it sucks, just so that I don't have to pay out more 'rent'.

I'm cheap too. I play WoW, but no longer pay for it. ;)

Check out WoWgasm.org. They have a blizz-like server (Kara), and instant-70 (gotta quest for the gear) PVP Funserver (BT), and a really odd custom server with custom mobs, gear, leveling areas and shopping area (Nexus).

I can get my WoW-Fix for free...anytime.

(Would work great if you decide to put your "rent" into SW:TOR)

I mostly play Everquest 2, though I have Station Access (or whatever they're calling it now) and the betas for EQ1 and EQ2 have some interesting stuff, though it's mostly more of the same.

Is WoWgasm.org legal?

Heh..

100% legal to play.

As for the folks hosting the server? Questionable...but who cares if blizzard does not? (And free-to-play private servers have existed damn near since the beginning of WoW).
