Still too early to judge effect of PS3's price cut

By Ed Oswald | Published November 16, 2007, 4:07 PM

NPD's sales numbers for the PlayStation 3 still show the console lagging its competitors badly, however it was before the price of the console dropped.

Sony cut prices on the PS3 on November 2, but the data is for the month of October. What can be gleaned from NPD's data is that Nintendo is likely selling its consoles as fast as they can ship them.

In the US, the company shipped 519,000 Wiis during the month, regaining the top spot from Microsoft, whose Xbox 360 sold the most during the month of September on the back of Halo 3.

The 366,000 Xbox 360s sold during the month likely were still buoyed by Microsoft's marquee gaming franchise, of which its 443,800 copies helped take the top spot among all software titles.

However, overall, the single best selling game was Guitar Hero 3, which sold some 1.4 million copies across all three consoles. NPD analyst Anita Frazier said that Activision's best-selling game had established itself as an "elite" video game property, and should be able to sell well through the holidays.

Coming in third was the PS3 with 121,000 consoles. However, its all but a certainty that this number will spike this month as consumers respond to the price cut and newer low-end PS3.

Sony's own data showed a 192 percent increase in PS3 sales following the price cut.

the new "$399" ps3, i just bought it.. first console ever!

I am/was a PC gamer only...but I cant afford to keep upgrading my PC every year!! i have a dual core pentium ,2 gigs of ram, but only agp support.. so whats next? get new Mobo w/ pciE and new cpu, memory, etc. = $3,000 (good quality)

or

Ps3, now my games have great fps..i dont need to o/c my video card i dont have to turn settings low...

finally, in the long run i'll get more bang for my buck w/ a console... trading used games, renting games, etc. try that w/ a PC

fyi.. the new 399 ps3 does NOT have media card readers built in and is NOT backwards compatible. I chose ps3 over 360 for many reasons!! only downside no rumble pad!! wtf nobody told me about that! good news, 3 more months and it will be back! :-) free online!! fuk xbox

Except that more people are on Xbox Live than the free PSN. I should mention too that the 360 has more games over the PS3 though too. So far most of the multiplatform games look the same (or sometimes even better) on the 360 version. Gamespot has some game comparasions if you want to have a look.

I just don't see the point in spending more money on the PS3 when you can get more games, basically the same graphics and better online with the Xbox 360.

Sony caught falsifying their numbers, again.

Earlier this week, we reported on an Associated Press story, which seemed to indicate that the PlayStation 3 was finally on a nice sales pace after the introduction of the $399 model. GameDaily BIZ and other media outlets were led to believe that Sony CEO Howard Stringer's 100,000 sold figure for the week ending November 11 was specific to the PS3. Apparently it was not.

Bloomberg.com found out from Sony Computer Entertainment corporate spokesperson Kimberly Otzman that the 100,000 actually was inclusive of all PlayStation consoles, which we would assume means PS2 and PSP as well – not so impressive.

We've followed up with Otzman for further clarification and to inquire about an actual PS3 specific sales total. In a release regarding the PS3's birthday earlier today, Sony did note that "since the availability of the new 40GB and 80GB PS3 models, sales have increased by 192% at the top 10 retailers in North America."

- Yeah......if you like over-priced and under-spec'd kit with the least amount of available and exclusive movie content.

" everyone should hope that the recently announced 4-layer 200GB extension will be used and get available quickly"

- You're deranged if you think the movie or TV business is going to jump at 100gb or even 200gb discs and if the movie and TV businesses don't go for it that means no chance of anyone else cos the economies of scale won't be bringing prices down.

You're also insane if you imagine anyone has compatible hardware for it.

But personally I'd love to see it.
Go ahead Blu-ray, confuse and pis*-off your existing market by instantly making everything obsolete.

It's just more vaporware (just like profile 1.1 and profile 2.0 is right now......and even if the necessary BD players do eventually hit the market there's precious little sign of any profile 1.1 and profile 2.0 software for them).

" because it's absolutely needed as well"

- More day-dreams from your own head......and Blu-ray.com.

For some weird reason the PS3-owning kiddies all swoon over these imaginary sizes of disc storage and 'think' that they (and not forgetting the incredibly expensive burners they will need) are essential to anybody.

It's just laughably ridiculous given the far lower prices and reliability of HDDs right now.

"What is for sure is that people don't need optical discs with less available space like HD-DVD."

- Following the final approval of the 51gb TL disc this week it's actually Blu-ray that has the smaller size now.

"(both have the same amount of DRM wanted by Hollywood anyway)."

HD DVD does share ACCS (now broken again) but it does not carry BD+ or the watermarking hardware that Blu-ray has.

I know they were losing money and still are on every console, if they could have launched with a $399 20GB and $499 60GB, the PS3 would have easily been the winner.

Sony should have came up with a better version of XBOX Live with a great GUI. Intead they use the monochromatic Windows Media Center style interface, which sucks. People will pay for a great online service like Live, Mcrosoft genrate 400 million a year just in Live fees, I know I've spent a few hundred on XBOX Live arcade and downloaded TV shows. If each person spent only 50-75 dollars a year additional on Live products / downloads, that's a cool billion annually, enough to pay for all the faulty console repairs.

Sony dropped the ball in a lot of areas on the PS3. I would be releasing BD movies with PS3 mini games on them, just like the CD's with interactive PC programs.

"Ayone else find it funny how many idiots have been fooled into paying $80 a year for nothing more than a bit torrent style network, that costs Microsoft nothing to run? LOL!!!"

Well more people have signed up for the '$80 a year' Xbox Live over Sony's free PSN. You'd have to be a fool paying $400+ for a PS3 for less games and no one to play with on PSN. LOL!!!

Wrong. It works great, if you are lucky enough to be connected to other people with good connections.

When a few people with crap connections join, guess what, everyone suffers.

That's why XBL is laggy.

Xbox division has never made a cent, and with the 1.1Billion put by to fix shoddy manufacturered consoles, they ain't no profit this generation either.

An interesting titbit. I had a very interesting conversion with a collegue who did some work at Celestica Prague, where they do Xbox360 repairs. Apparently, the DOA rate of 360, from China production is still around 40% of all consoles. Their repair workload is 50/50 spit between field failures, and QA failures during manufacturing. Volume wise, they are reworking over 220,000 Xbox 360's a week. And it's 90% rework on the GPU BGA.

I think you will find that Sony is losing a ridiculous amount of money on the PS3 and not getting NEAR enough game sales to make up for it. Considering that MS is only on their 2nd generation that is a pretty idiotic comparison anyway. Even with the repair costs the 360 is still well on its' way to profitability with its' FAR superior attach rate(incase you "missed" it above it is more than the Wii and PS3 combined *wink*).

What a fool. Don't you know that both the PS1 and PS2 both lost lots of money early in their life, and developers complained they were tricky to develop for?

Sorry, but history IS repeating itself yet again, in 2 ways.

1/ Microsoft will dump on all the existing 360 owners by launching a new model prematurely.

2/PS3 will turnaround, infact it's already begun, it's outselling the 360 by a factor of 3x in Europe, it's now also outselling the Wii in Japan, US sales have doubled since the price cut, and there is a massive list of great PS3 exclusives that have just launched, and are due Q1/Q2 2008.

So, is it 1.1B or 8B like you've previously claimed?

"I had a very interesting conversion with a collegue who did some work at Celestica Prague, where they do Xbox360 repairs. I read a VERY similar story a few months ago, when the warranty extension was first announced: "According to claims sent by Xbox 360 owner Lee Sherman to the online arm of Xbox 360 Gamer Magazine, Microsoft's Havant repair center has begun sending some of its units to the Czech Republic repair center in Prague, while claiming to owners that the repairs are being carried out domestically. Sherman, whose console has been out for repair for some three weeks, allegedly tracked down the Prague center through directory enquiry service." The story goes on to claim over 2000 units per day have been shipped to the Prague repair facility.

Nothing in the story was ever substantiated by MS (or anyone official), though.

Even if it had been, that's a far cry from "220,000"...
