Take-Two Subpoenaed by Grand Jury

By Nate Mook | Published June 26, 2006, 5:51 PM

Although it reached a very lenient settlement with the Federal Trade Commission, Take-Two's troubles over the "Hot Coffee" mod are not over yet. The company announced Monday afternoon that it has received subpoenas from a grand jury in New York.

The subpoenas demand documents regarding what executives and directors of the game publisher knew about the sex scenes exposed by the modification. However, Take-Two says neither it, nor its executives, are under investigation. In response to the Hot Coffee debacle, both Republicans and Democrats in Congress have pushed for stricter game regulations, but no federals laws have been passed.

its a "M" rated game. honestly, i dont care whats in it once its got an "M" rating, so long as it is rated appropriately. jack thompson and the rest of these uptight conservative jack-offs can bugger off. in this day and age, such ideas can lead to censorship. considering this game is sold to those 18 and up, i dont think they are going far enough.

The stupid part is I wouldn't be surprised if this was thrown in as a funny easter-egg by a handful of developers and the stupid thing never was even seen by anyone other than them till they leaked information out on how to find it themselves. To top it off, I'll bet they've already been fired but yet Take Two CONTINUES to get sued! Why?!? I mean all these suits are going to drive Take Two into the ground or make them raise the price of their games sooner rather than later. If people think they can freely sue a development company every time something iffy happens in a game, it'll probably be a few years and it's gonna cost $100 to purchase a decent game just because every game is dually protected with some new form of litigation insurance.

Can we just drop the issue?!? I haven't played any of the GTA series, I honestly don't care for the series but when I heard about this...I DIDN'T CARE. My dad feels the same way I do about the GTA series and that's why he didn't buy them for my kid brother. The parents who bought the game took the risk for crying out loud. What did you think were getting when you bought a clearly violent game for your 12-year-old? Did you think it was going to be nothing but good wholesome fun?!? Come on, we live and learn. Let..it...die...I'm soooo sick of this topic!

the game IS rated M for MATURE, i think even an 8 year old knows what that means.

problem is alot of places refuse to sell video games rated Adult, im not really sure why /grins.

So the companies try to find a way to be able to get it rated lower, i don't blame them, and it makes me as the consumer able to obtain the game easier when its more widley available in various stores.

If parents would start watching what thier kids do, we wouldn't have suits like this, I was in line once at a store this kid came back four times trying to buy this adult rated game and kept getting denied cause he wasn't 17+ and his parent gave in and bought it for them, and yes this was grand theft auto, the irony! :O

I take it none of you are parents with young kids. I often have 7 grandkids around and have to remind my adult son not to play the vulgar rap or adult movies when the kids are over. The same goes for the video games he plays. He can play anything he wants when they are not visiting, but he knows that he must tone it down when they are around.

You are 100% correct BIL.

And that is where the responsibility of this should lay, on the parents (or grandparents as the case may be).

Any parent upset about this has no one to blame but themselves.

Ok, your assumption that every parent/grandparent 'should' be like BIL is correct. However, in reality they are not like this at all.

I don't care what kind of games they make, but I do think games with lower ratings are far more violent than they should be. I don't buy this particular lawsuit with Take Two, since the game had to be modded to do this, but this does bring up a debate in which I think is good.

Nudity is 'not' more important than violence in game content. The game industry ratings are 'not' good. Its ashame that this case is used to bring this up, but its good that congress is trying to do something (again I wish it dodn't involve this case though).

Its amazing how bad nudity in games is, but violence in games is completely overlooked.

BTW - I am not suggesting to remove violent games, just rate them adult, thats all. The only ones that should be upset by this are the kids playing these kinds of games.

The point is that the government shouldn't be setting the standards for our kids because parents fail as parents. It is the parent's responsibility to teach their kids right from wrong, not the Republicans and Democrats or any other elected official that makes laws in this country.

Maybe that standard should be forced (and *enforced*) on the PARENTS.

It is not the kids, the retailers, the developer, or the Gov that should take the brunt of this kind of legislation or suit. It's the irresponsible parents who *refuse* to take responsibility for their own children.

Amen. It's the *parents* responsibility. The average American parent spends more time watching TV than helping their kid with homework or encouraging them to become more socially responsible. I play violent games because I choose to. However, if I dare pick up my mouse and keyboard before my child has had the opportunity to tell me how his/her day was, then I have severly neglected my responsibility as their parent. How dare the parent that blames a teacher or society for a lack of moral structure in their child, and then goes back home to watch pr0n, fail to be active with their own child, or shows an honest interest in their child's welfare.

While a great idea in concept, and I don't honestly believe that you believe it is realistic, I would avoid this alternative together because it fails to teach our society anything. In fact, it would only further the problem by increasing promiscuity at potentially even younger ages. To give anyone the false impression that promiscuity has no consequences is to handicap the laws of nature that are embedded into our conscience.

Score: 0

It's true...having children is no longer the 'miracle' it used to be. We used to, as a society, rejoice at the birth of a child. Now it is far less celebrated, and is mostly recognized as the natural course of life. With this shift it has taken much of the grandeur of life away and replaced it with another 'scientific explanation' of the how our world functions, which then takes away the high esteem with which we hold life.

Score: 0

To give anyone the false impression that promiscuity has no consequences is to handicap the laws of nature that are embedded into our conscience.

Actually, those laws of nature favor promiscuity. Sterilization will just take away a modern consequence of promiscuity, pregnancy. It is a guaranteed way to reduce teenage pregnancy, think of the children. :P

Two points here:
1.) It is the parent's responsibility, but they aren't all very bright. Its not the kid's fault the parents suck, so these kids do need help.
2.) So far noone has advocated not making the games, just make them harder for kids to get, kinda like beer, its there but kids aren't able to get it. Its really quite simple :)

So far noone has advocated not making the games, just make them harder for kids to get, kinda like beer, its there but kids aren't able to get it.

Kids won't be able to get the games if their parents don't give them the money, or have to pay fines for not supervising their children. Note how many times you see stated "the parents buy the game".

Beer is a controlled substance, video games are an expression of ideas. Whether those ideas have merit or should be limited in their audience should not be decided by any government, ever...yes, I do include victimless porn in that as well.

How dare the parent that blames a teacher or society for a lack of moral structure in their child, and then goes back home to watch pr0n, fail to be active with their own child, or shows an honest interest in their child's welfare.

Actually, it seems to me the ones doing the most finger pointing at society are the ones that think they themselves have immaculate moral structure and would never "decend" to the levels of the porn watching heathens. It is they who think society should bend to their moral compass, instead of having to mould their children themselves.

But we all know the public is too ignorant to know what is good for them, and they should just leave their thinking and "choices" to the trustworthy government.

I know the difference between beer and games :) It was just an easy analogy.

Fining the parents is not that bad of an idea, however, to do that you have to assign the games a rating based on thier 'content', which you seem to have a problem with.

Again, I have NO PROBLEM with violent video games, they can be made and sold as the market allows. I just have a problem where violent games are underrated and sold to kids, thats all.

Sorry if I sounded like I was jumping down your throat; but the comment "So far noone has advocated not making the games" got me. While I have not noticed any here at BN, there are definitely many people in the US that would like to have the games banned altogether.

As far selling them to kids? It just occured to me, why should kids have control of "their" money in the first place? When I was a kid, I had to clear most purchases through my parents before buying them.

Score: 0

Saying guns and violence cause crime is like saying knives and food causes gourmet quisine. Crime is caused by a lack of empathy towards others, either due to improper(not "immoral") upbringing or desperation from unfortunate circumstances. Crime is a result of a culture that has failed to show its members the value of working towards/for something, and a society that fails to aid its hard workers when circumstances conspire against them.
