Target to Push Blu-ray Over HD DVD

By the Betanews Staff | Published July 26, 2007, 11:46 AM

Sony has scored another win in the war for high-definition dominance, signing a deal with Target to promote Blu-ray players and movies exclusively in its retail stores. Sony is paying a fee to have Blu-ray featured in end-of-aisle displays, and Target will not carry the $179 HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360.

Target will continue to offer HD DVD products on its Web site, and did not specify why it had selected Blu-ray only for its brick-and-mortar locations. The HD DVD Promotional Group said the move by Target was not important, as its Toshiba players are already featured at Circuit City and Best Buy. It's also not clear if Target customers, who are typically not high-end shoppers, will be willing to spend $499 for Sony's Blu-ray player with HD DVD players available elsewhere for $299.

What a shocker: Sony paid a fee for this "privilege". Though Target sells $150.00 home decor, their electronic dept. is pretty low-end. As the blurb above states, it's doubtful the Target customer base will fork over $500 for a BR player. Heck, I don't shoe at Target (or BB or CC even). Fry's and Amazon keep me pretty well covered. Dave,

I just noticed the TV in your system that you claim to be a plasma is actually a cheap DLP rear projetion.

You suck at lying as well as everything else.

Alright, so it's a plasma. It's an ugly piece of crap and not even big enough to see the difference between regular DVD and HD. You got hosed.

Where's your universal remote? I guess that wasnt in the budget.

I admit it, I don't go anywhere or do anything important, I made everything up to impress a bunch of people I will never meet because i just wanted to feel like a big man. You know what that's like don't you?

After going through the Universal Remote MX-3000, various Prontos, and a couple other small touch screens, I finally decided low-tech hard buttons are better than touch screens.

The Universal MX-850 is what I am using right now to control my main system and lighting. The 850 is fully programmable on your PC and if the remote takes a crap and dies, you can always load the file on a new one.

The 650 is button programmable and does everything the 850 does but if it goes bad, you are screwed unless you have a $300.00 reader than can clone your remote file to a PC via the IR outputs.

So here's how it ended up, my theater / projector has a dedicated MX-3000 for the cool factor only for HD-DVD / BD, projector, screen, drapes, audio, and lights.

The main system that gets used by everybody has an MX-850 as I am constantly changing things in that room.

My first floor system uses an MX-650 because it's only a TV, DVD, and a 360. There is a similar system upstairs that also uses a 650.

You will find that hard buttons can be used by feel whereas a touch screen forces you to look at it for most functions.

I though the touch screen would be cool but it turns out they are more of a pain to use, and that's why I only use it for the theater.

Once the macro gets everything in place and you are watching a movie, you don't really touch the remote unless you need to pause the movie.

LMAO.

The Blu-ray shills get ever more desperate, anxious to try and talk up a little 'momentum any ways they can.

All this is right now is another little meaningless PR gimmick (cos on-line sales/rental is always going to be a much bigger deal) and paid for sales novelties (end of isle spots etc).

Then we get treated to this insanity that the high def war rests on the extended LOTR movies now, oh really?

How deluded is that?

Actually I have all 3 of the LOTR movies in EE in SD DVD (and have had for almost 12mths) but I've yet to find the time (or inclination) to sit down to around 4hrs per movie (I suspect I'm far from alone).

The idea that the EE of LOTR is a mass-market 'clincher' for Blu-ray cos their version might include a few more bells and whistles is laughable.
Particluarly so in a mass-market where Dolby Pro-Logic is still seen as sophisticated (and by that it's often no more than a couple of basic & cheap satellite speakers and a centre speaker that came with the TV).

The idea that HD DVD has a (highly debateable) big 'problem' cos it can't stuff absolutely everything into 30gbs
(which is just hypocritical funny BS coming from the Blu-ray fanclub - cos even with 50gbs you have to make choices at what you'll include or not)
is patently absurd.
Although having said that I think we'll not see LOTR on HD DVD until the move to 17gb per layer and the 34gb dual layer discs appear.....at that stage it's problem solved anyways.

(Oh, and for those worried about it, it's only the 51gb triple layer disc that people aren't sure will work or not with gen 1 HD DVD players, 34gb DL discs will be just fine)

This so-called 'format war' will not be decided on the basis of the very very tiny number of over-sized movies out there.

"throw your HD DVD players away, as new 34GB/51GB are coming along, and yours won't be compatable with the new HD DVD discs".

- You are a risible & hopeless liar.

Dual layer at 34gb (like single layer @ 17gb) will definitely be compatible with all existing HD DVD players (it is a fact, if you knew the subject & anything about the specs right from the 1st HD DVD drive/player).

There is absolutely no indication whatsoever that the movie business will ever move beyond DL HD DVD - especially if the bar is raised to 17gb/34gb.

In which case even if (cos it is still open to question.....triple layering was always part of the spec too right from the start) it is only gen 2 or 3 machines onwards & PC drives that use it, it will make no difference to anybody.

(.......even if we speculate on a stage further and guess that the movie industry might use TL 51gb occasionally, they'd make sure the disc was laid out & spread over the layers so as not to lose the gen 1 market .....but I guess such obvious logic is beyond a brain-dead shill/drone like yourself?)

"I can't see how HD DVD sell anything with the threat of obsolecence hanging over it head"

Not sure what thats got to do with Target dropping HD DVD, but i'll bite anyway.

That is a twisted quote from Rockstar developer. It's already acknowledged that 360 is getting episodic content (as it can't fit it all on DVD), and Microsoft paid $50,000,000 for it. Expect it to arrive on Xbox live mid 2008 for an additional $50..

Am I bothered? Nope.. Your quite welcome to your old Playstation exclusives. PS3 onwners get those PLUS new exclusives.

It wont cost $50.

Also you can spin it how you like, but the fact of the matter is if you want the full GTA experience you aren't getting it on the POS3.

"and Microsoft paid $50,000,000 for it."

Good for them. Shows that they are willing to spend a little money to make sure the 360 owners get the absolute best experience.

From what I hear, if you want the full experience, you need GTA4 on Blu-Ray, so you don't change discs when you drive between areas on the maps. I heard GTA4 is coming on 2 DVD's for the 360.

Was this article supposed to prove something?

"PS. How do you know it won't cost $50? How are Microsoft supposed to get back that $50,000,000 ?"

Umm because that would be incredibly stupid on their part, and there is no logic behind it perhaps? Nobody is going to pay $50 for an add on. They will get that $50,000,000 back from increased console sales, and then multi platform owners will buy GTA IV on 360 instead of POS3, thus giving them more sales.

While typically just smiling over these 360/P3 debates and having no intention to spend my time on verifying such claims - wouldn't such a move be considered unlawful anti-competitive behavior of exactly the kind Intel and MS were convicted of in various courts?

You truly are an idiot, you do realize competition is a GOOD thing, if PS3 loses or Xbox360 loses or Wii loses, the customer loses as well.

the reasons are only speculation on gamepro, they don't reflect the industry itself.

I'd wish Wollies would tell us how many Blu-ray discs they sold to be making this decision on.

.....or is it more paid for meaningless PR in the first part of this so-called 'format war' when discs sales are under 1% of the retail disc market and so it won't mean anything of real consequence.

....and the idea that Woolies are still a big player in the UK highstreet?!

LMAO.

Where did the source for Target not selling the HD-Xbox add on come from? They sell the add on now and in the Forbs story they will continue to.
Target sells 2 HD-players on their web site and claim they are not picking sides. Right now they are selling movies for both and only have the HD add on and the ps3 as HD players in their stores.
Are they truly going blue or is this a X-mas advertising deal?

Before the retarded jagoff shows up, this only refers to players and not movie titles. They will continue to sell HD-DVD and BD movies. For some reason they will not be selling HD-DVD plaers or even the 360 add-on.

Every time I go there I will ask for a 360 add-on or an HD-DVD set top player just to bust balls.

I knew this 2 days ago. Sounds like a strongarm tactic by Sony and the BD group.

Unfortunately, most Target customers don't care or have the money for next gen HD movie players let alone an HD set big enough to see the difference between upscaled standard DVD and HD-DVD / BD.

But you can bet that Wal-Mart will do the exact opposite, not that it will matter as thier customers don't give a sh!t about next gen movie players either.
