Telecom Italia Buys AOL Germany

By the Betanews Staff | Published September 18, 2006, 1:10 PM

As part of an ongoing effort to distance itself from the ISP business both domestically and in Europe, AOL parent Time Warner said Monday it is selling AOL Germany to Telecom Italia for about $870 million in cash.

AOL Germany counts 1.1 million broadband subscribers and another 1.3 million on dial-up. AOL will continue to have a presence in the country, however, providing its Web based services and content to Telecom Italia's 3.2 million customers. AOL is additionally looking to sell its ISP businesses in France and the United Kingdom.

So is time warner just selling the equipment or the name too? I am eager to see the financial results of aol next quarter. I mean dropping all your revenue made through traditional means all of a sudden. Then hoping that enough people will use the service for free for advertising revenue to make up for it was just a strange move.

The free service sucks even more then it did when you had to pay 15 dollars a month for it. They blocked out the chat rooms and any other feature that was actually useful or fun. I see no other value in aol or even a use for it othe r then socializing.
