The PS2 Turns 7, New Model on Tap
By Ed Oswald | Published October 26, 2007, 1:18 PM
Despite its struggles with the PlayStation 3, Sony's PlayStation 2 business continues to press forward, with the company celebrating its seven anniversary Friday by announcing that more than 120 million consoles have been sold worldwide.
This is combined with sales of over two billion software titles, which makes the PS2 the most popular gaming platform ever released. Despite claims that it is cannibalizing PS3 sales, Sony plans to continue development for the PS2 into the next decade.
About 160 new games are expected through March 2008, including Guitar Hero III, Madden NFL 08, and Manhunt 2. Additionally, the company plans to release a new model of the PS2 in ceramic white, which will be bundled with Singstar Pop and two microphones and retail for $149.99.
"We look forward to the platform's continued growth and expect to sell approximately 12 million units worldwide by the end of March, leading us to anticipate that PlayStation 2's life cycle will exceed that of the original PlayStation," SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton said in the announcement.
PS2's wide success comes in stark contrast to the struggles of Sony's next-generation platform, the PlayStation 3. In nearly every major market, the new console trails both the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360 by substantial margins.
Sony has made moves to boost sales of the PS3, namely cutting prices in major markets and introducing a cheaper model, but it is too soon to judge whether these changes will have any effect on long-term sales.
Even if the PS3 does not take off, Sony has the PS2 to fall back on. In a statement announcing the platform's latest milestone, the company committed to supporting the 7 year-old game console through at least 2010.
About 160 new games are expected through March 2008
New games, for a console that's 7 years old. That's just through March.
The PS3 has barely seen half of that many games total... almost a full year since launch.
Committed to supporting it at least through 2010, also? Perhaps Sony should have just offered a Blu-ray add-on for the PS2 instead of wasting so much money on the PS3. :)

http://news.digitaltrend..._turns_seven_goes_white
http://kotaku.com/gaming...-turns-seven-315385.php
Notice that the above linked story's were about the anniversary of the PS2 and it’s crazy, but they actually talked about that.
This is how Ed Oswald starts his story:
“Despite its struggles with the PlayStation 3…”
Now this is how Ed Eswald finishes the story:
He mentions the PS2 again, then gives a quote, but then goes on and on about the how bad the PS3 is doing. 5 of the 7 paragraphs are about the PS3’s shortcomings. This is a story about the PS2? Couldn’t tell by reading it. Yes I know that what he is saying is not false, but that’s not what this story is about now is it.
THAT is the difference between what my linked sites report, and what Ed reports. THAT’S what makes him biased. This was not a PS3 story, it was a PS2 story. It’s ok to mention the struggling PS3, but how about making this PS2 story entitled “The PS2 Turns 7, New Model on Tap”…. ABOUT THE PS2!
Hence, Ed is a hack who cannot separate his prejudices with his job.

A console in its 7th year of life that is getting yet another facelift is hardly worthy of that much excitement. The Atari 2600 had a redesign, as did the NES, Genesis, original PlayStation, etc. Big deal. It's about as newsworthy as Apple announcing additional colors for it's Nano line.
Half of the 80 comments are of the Sony/PS3/Blu-ray fanboys who moan and whine about anything which paints any of the above-mentioned in a negative light. It isn't spin, it's pointing out facts. BetaNews doesn't make up "bad news" about Sony. The bad news is already there... BN is simply another outlet making it more widely known. Aside from the success of the PlayStation 2, when was the last time Sony actually did or announced anything that was truly worthy of shouting it from the rooftops? They receive consistent bad press for a reason.
I will concede that the comparisons between the PS2 and the PS3 were unnecessary filler. I did however find the mention of the PS3's unpopularity to be a rather nice segue into the company's announcement of prolonged support of the PS2 platform.

The rather nice segue into the prolonged support of the PS2 platform is cool... I also agree with you that this isn’t exactly the most exiting news I’ve read.
But the "unnecessary filler" is my point exactly. It can't be "unnecessary filler" if 5 of 7 paragraphs are PS3 on a PS2 story. 5 of 7 paragraphs are a whole story about the PS3 with PS2 fillers. I just did not happen to take it the way that you took it, I suppose. I didn't necessarily view it as a negative article. What I walked away from was this:
In spite of Sony's poor PlayStation 3 marketing efforts, there is some good news for Sony for a change. Their PlayStation 2 is still kicking a** and taking names, as old as it is.
The inclusion of the PlayStation 3 in the article, albeit unnecessary, did not magically turn the article into a negative one. I did not find it to detract from the main point of the article. Nothing was said that is not already fairly common knowledge regarding the struggling PlayStation 3, so no news there... but again I agree, not necessary to get the main point of the article across.
However, I do not share your apparent views that it was somehow irresponsible of him in mentioning it.
It is simply Ed's views, and it was the way he chose to exercise his journalistic freedom. It is part of his writing style, and I respect his opinions no differently than I respect your own or anyone else's on this forum. I simply believe berating him and calling him a "hack" was a tad harsh and uncalled for... but hey, we do that to each other all the time here.
