By Nate Mook | Published July 6, 2006, 5:08 PM

GameTap, an on-demand gaming service for the PC with over 500 classic titles, is seeking beta testers to try out the newest version of the software. Backed by parent company Time Warner, GameTap expects to add hundreds of new games and entirely new gaming platforms with the next update.

Beta testers must live in the United States and be running Windows 2000 or XP. Those accepted will receive a free GameTap account, as well as an opportunity to provide input on new features and UI changes. Applications are being accepted at beta.gametap.com, and require that individuals enter a registration password of world_cup.

Why pay for these when you can get every game ever made for the old game systems on bitorrent and play with emulators? It's not as if Nintendo and Sega still make a profit on games from the NES, SNES, and GENESIS anymore so who cares? Yeah...I know they do...I don't though.

Can I get these games on steam please?

Valve have been doing this for years, with Steam, now AOL want a bit of the pie, and want to launch their own client.

Soon Microsoft will join in, followed by ID software, followed by Google.

Before you know it, you will have 7 different game delivery systems on your PC, each one sitting in your system tray, each one trying to out do the rest..

Why can't these companies work together to make 1 single, open content delivery system, that integrates nicely, has built in IM and game profile capabilities? Seems what the consumers want, and what the big fat cat corporations want are totally different...

Because the same consumers that would 'want' it would scream "ANTI-TRUST" until their eyes exploded when it happened.

because every company is too egotistic that they think they are always better than the other one so they never work together. Valve has a good thing going on with HalfLife stuff, so why would it want to included itself with AOL?

They have, it's called BitTorrent. :) Well, it doesn't support IM or game profiles, but it's an open content delivery system. ;)

Why require a registration password when it is news articles all over the place?

I'm assuming they're trying to control which news services print this story, and they assume that the readers of those publications will have the certain tech savvy necessary for something like this.
