Toshiba Lowers HD DVD Shipment Estimates

By Ed Oswald | Published June 12, 2007, 11:45 AM

Not even a day after it had boasted about rapidly increasing player sales, Toshiba said Tuesday it would lower its sales target for HD DVD players in North America.

On Monday, the Toshiba-backed HD DVD Promotions Group said it regained its lead over Blu-ray, now holding 60 percent of all high-definition set-top players sold. In addition, the format was able to set an all-time record for titles sold in May, with 75,000 discs shipped.

Previously, the company had expected to sell 1.8 million players in 2007. However, Toshiba's digital consumer business chief Yoshihide Fujii told reporters that the estimate would have to be lowered to about 1 million players.

How this would affect the worldwide sales forecasts of 3 million units is not yet known, as the company declined to provide any more specific estimates.

However, supporters of HD DVD were quick to point out that Blu-ray wasn't faring much better, as sales of the PS3 were not as strong as Sony would have liked, and many were buying the console to play games - not using the Blu-ray movie functionality.

I've stopped buying *any* DVD's until the HD format war is settled. Why buy SD DVD's when HD DVD's are out, and why buy HD DVD's while they're still battling it out?

"On Monday, the Toshiba-backed HD DVD Promotions Group said it regained its lead over Blu-ray, now holding 60 percent of all high-definition set-top players sold."

So HD-DVD has shipped over 4 million players??? they must have, as PS3 with Blu-Ray has sold 3.5 million).

We all know this is pure BS. At last count, HD-DVD has only shipped 300,000 units gloablly, less that 1/10th of Blu-Ray numbers. This is pure BS, from a desperate failing product...

Then you woke up...

The PS3 is not selling the Blu-Ray movies that great. That is a lot of players with mediocore sales to show for it. HD-DVD isn't far behind and they don't have all these "magic PS3s" out there. Next HD-DVD price drop and Blo-Ray is going to be biting the dust. Also they said "set-top" players. Guess you Sony fangirls just have trouble reading sometime.

Yah your right. Guess that is why their sales doubled in May. Because it is failing right?

Hi Dave. Another new name? What a tool.

By the way jagoff, if you actually read the article it says dedicated set top BD players, not including PS3's.

But Mr DaveBG spinmaster only reads what he wants to hear.

The fact is there are fifteen times more BD players out there than HD-DVD's but they are barely selling movies at a 2 to 1 ratio.

Another indication that HD-DVD loyalists spend a lot more money on movies than the BD crowd.

Of course you have to actually own a player to be part of the format war, which we all know you don't Dave.

Nice try though. I am smarter than you and I will always point out your stupidity merely for the entertainment of others.

I'm still holding off until I actually purchase a BD movie for the Pirates trilogy and Cars. Those should be released sometime before 2023.

Let me help you with that:

Hmmm .. just my take on that

Any other suggestions ...?

"Only 3 million? Sony will have 3 million PS3s in homes before the holiday season even begins! You fanboyz right biased articlz when everywon knowz that teh HDDVD wont even sell 1 million!!!!11!1!! "

Lol. News flash bud. A VERY large percentage of the people getting PS3s are not even buying Blu-Ray movies. If they were Blu-Ray would be absolutely dominating HD-DVD. The HD-DVD is winning in sales where it counts. In set-top players. So far the PS3 is proving to be a failure anyway. Sales are dropping every month and they are already pretty pathetic.
