Toshiba to Deliver 200GB Laptop Drive

Toshiba has announced a new 2.5-inch hard drive for notebook computers that boasts 200GB of storage space on only two disk platters thanks to new perpendicular recording technology. The company expects to begin mass producing the Serial ATA drive, which spins at 4,200 RPM, in August.
Perpendicular recording stands data bits on their end, enabling more storage density on each hard drive platter. The technology has already been employed by a number of different manufacturers, including Seagate and Hitachi. Toshiba says the drives will help the industry's push for thinner and lighter laptop computers.
I'm waiting for the 200GB 10,000 RPM Raptor drive for laptops. :)

|I wonder what the Price will be - ? - you shurely rather be able to by a new laptop cheaper

|Another Toshiba rush--can't wait for all of the "SMART" error calls...
...that blasted 30GB drive was kinda bad, the 60GB drive sucked a$$, and I can expect the Toshiba 200GB notebook drive to have a better track record? Count me out.
Toshiba is great in alot of business avenues--the 2.5" hard drive market is definately not their cup of tea.

|I'll be waiting for the seagate.
The 5 year warranty kinda seals the deal.

|They're still making 4,200 RMP HDDs ...?

|Yes, they are the norm for laptops. Lower RPM = lower power consumption,

|and the tighter packed data = faster transfer rates.
So...
your new 4200 rpm 200GB drive will probably be faster than your old 5400 80GB. :)

|agree with you there.

|My laptop has a 7200 rpm 60GB drive. I've seen a tremendous increase in performance. 5400 is somewhat the norm, but I honestly think that it is unacceptable for power users who need the speed to settle for 5400.
Is there a site that compares the 4200 parallel drive performance to standard speeds?
Score: 0
|Not really... 4200RPM is still very common in laptops, even new ones. Most people still go for the budget option with notebooks - excluding the more expensive 5400 and 7200RPM drives.
200GB would make a good portable backup though... I like the idea. :D

|Considering how slow my Hitachi 40GB 5400rpm hard drive w/8MB of cache is in my Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop, a 4200 rpm hard drive would probably seem as slow as the 10MB hard drive in my old Leading Edge brand XT computer.

|You can't compare normal drives and these new perpendicular drives - the data is very tightly packed so much faster to access at lower rpm. It will probably be faster than anything you've ever seen in a hard drive!
